Usher Tells Inspiring, Never Before Told Story At Emory Graduation
To know Usher is to know that he came from humble beginnings, but the road to become Dr. Usher Raymond IV wasn't always smooth sailing. As the keynote speaker at Emory's 2025 Commencement, the crooner also received an honorary doctorate from the university on Sunday (May 12.) His speech reflected on a pivotal moment from his youth that helped shape the man he is today. 'I'm not just accepting this honor for myself. I'm accepting it for every kid who's ever been told 'your dream was too big; your neighborhood was overlooked or your voice was too quiet.' For me, this moment is far more than a ceremonial moment filled with accolade and celebration for things that we all have done. It's personally deep for me,' he began. Usher recounted a story that he's 'never publicly shared' about being so 'academically far behind' after moving from Chattanooga, Tenn. to Atlanta and he was ultimately 'assigned to remedial classes, which at the time felt like a judgment on my ability.' The father of four was admittedly 'discouraged,' but he used his frustration to fuel his passion. 'Though I was misunderstood and passed on, that was the point of investment that I had to make in order to find my purpose. Because of that passion, I felt it would lead me in the right direction and it has,' Usher continued. 'Before I could sing, before I could dance, before I was a doctor,' he joked, 'I had passion.' Usher explained that 'the system' wasn't equipped to handle 'a student like [him]' and couldn't 'help prepare [him] for the future [he'd] have' and as a result, he became the global superstar and philanthropist we know and love. 'To go from that moment, to standing here and being honored by one of the most prestigious institutions, Emory [University], is truly full circle and proof that the journey is the destination.' 'There's nothing that's going to help, except for some Dawn and a dry cleaner possibly,' she wrote. Thinking on her feet, Graham came up with a stylish solution: she used a stunning diamond brooch by Nikos Koulis to mask the stain. 'Well, I am tooting my own horn here… it was my bright idea,' she admitted. Though she joked that she regretted not having more brooches on hand, the single accessory became the centerpiece of her ensemble. What Do We Actually Need to Know About Lorde's Gender Identity?
In my experience, nobody loves gossip about the LGBTQ+ community more than…well, members of said community. To wit: I've recently been involved in a lot of conversations about what, precisely, is going on with Lorde's gender identity, a topic that the 28-year-old musician shed new light on in an interview with Rolling Stone this week. 'My gender got way more expansive when I gave my body more room,' Lorde told interviewer Brittany Spanos, echoing a line from the as-yet-unreleased opening track of her next album, Virgin—'Some days I'm a woman/Some days I'm a man'—and comments she made about feeling 'like a man and a woman' in custom Thom Browne at the 2025 Met Gala. Apparently, no less a queer authority than Chappell Roan has also chimed in with questions about how Lorde identifies: 'She was like, 'So, are you nonbinary now?' And I was like, 'I'm a woman except for the days when I'm a man,'' Lorde recounted. 'I know that's not a very satisfying answer, but there's a part of me that is really resistant to boxing it up.' Hearing all the chatter, I can't help feeling a little bit protective over Lorde. As someone who has struggled to put my feelings about my own gender into words (and frequently tripped over myself, trying to reassure people that my use of she/they pronouns isn't something they need to worry about or consider in any way whatsoever), I wish that we could all just be cool about whatever it is Lorde is working through, gender-wise. I don't think it's inherently harmful to have questions about a public figure's gender identity, and I also know that as white, upper-middle-class, AFAB people, Lorde and I aren't the people directly being harmed by the virulent transphobia coursing through the Trump administration. (To her credit, Lorde has acknowledged this, too, telling Spanos: 'I want to make very clear that I'm not trying to take any space from anyone who has more on the line than me. Because I'm, comparatively, in a very safe place as a wealthy, cis, white woman.') But I would also throw out there that my life got instantly better and easier once I started to see gender as an individual mode of expression that had nothing to do with anyone else's.

Cameras captured Law Roach—Zendaya's stylist and frequent collaborator—reacting to Sawai's entrance in real time at the gala. 'I am dying 'cause she's got on Zendaya's look,' he said to an interviewer. 'I'm so glad we came early.' A week later, Roach revealed that there was no ill will on either side and provided some insight into the inspiration behind both looks.
