NHL Draft: Three Candidates To Be Surprising Top Five Picks

Vancouver Canucks Will Select 15th Overall In The 2025 NHL Entry Draft The Vancouver Canucks will be selecting 15th overall in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. While there was a chance that the Canucks could have moved up ten spots, they did not win the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery, which took place on Monday. As for which teams will be picking in the top three this season, that will be the New York Islanders, the San Jose Sharks and the Chicago Blackhawks. 1:51 Now Playing Paused Ad Playing

The New York Islanders caught a massive break on Monday when they won the NHL Draft Lottery despite only having a 3.5 percent chance before the ping-pong balls started bouncing. The Islanders, who finished with the 10th-worst record in the NHL this season, had the second-lowest odds of winning the lottery, only ahead of the Rangers. But the hockey gods smiled down on the Isles, allowing them to add a blue-chip prospect to a system that has long been viewed as one of the weakest in the league. What made this lottery win extra dramatic is the fact that one of the top players in the draft pool is a local product. James Hagens, a native of Hauppauge on Long Island, was the consensus top prospect before the 2024-25 season began, but was passed on most draft boards by defenseman Matthew Schaefer and forward Michael Misa by the midway point of the campaign. The betting market for the NHL Draft won't truly settle for weeks, but the initial offering from bet365 sportsbook suggests that the Islanders are unlikely to draft Hagens with the top pick. Hagens is currently listed at +225 to go No. 1 overall, with the field sitting at -300. Those odds carry an implied probability of 30.8 percent. There is important context, however. When this market first opened, Hagens was +375 to go No. 1 overall, so this price has shortened since the Islanders won the lottery. The New York Islanders won the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery. NHLI via Getty Images That line movement is logical, as it makes more sense for the Islanders to pick Hagens, who grew up an Isles fan, in this spot than just about any other team. There is also the possibility, albeit unlikely, that the Islanders trade down from the top pick and draft Hagens while accruing more assets in the process. The Islanders are still searching for their new general manager after letting Lou Lamoriello go in April. Round 1 of the 2025 NHL Draft will take place on June 27 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

Bruins Should Try To Reunite With Blackhawks Forward

Ryan Donato (© Talia Sprague-Imagn Images) The Boston Bruins are preparing for what should be a very busy off-season for them. After disappointing big time during the 2024-25 season and trading away multiple former core players, their goal will now be to add new talent to their roster. The Bruins are in a prime position to do some spending, as they are entering the summer with plenty of cap space. Due to this, the possibility of them adding to their roster through free agency is there, and one player who they should consider pursuing because of it is Chicago Blackhawks forward Ryan Donato. Donato is a player the Bruins know well, as he was drafted 56th overall by the team in 2014 and played his first two seasons with the club. In 46 games over two seasons with the Bruins, he had 11 goals and 18 points. His time with the Bruins ended when he was traded to the Minnesota Wild at the 2019 NHL trade deadline in the move that brought Charlie Coyle to Boston. If Donato hits the free-agent market, the Bruins should try to reunite with the Massachusetts native. They need help at the center position and more secondary scoring, which is something Donato can provide. His 2024-25 season effectively demonstrates this. The 29-year-old forward hit a new level with the Blackhawks this campaign, setting new career highs with 31 goals, 31 assists, and 62 points in 80 games. If the Bruins brought back Donato and he maintained his 2024-25 form, he would be a major addition to their roster. Furthermore, he would be a clear fit for their power play, which needs assistance. Nevertheless, with the Bruins needing more offense, Donato is a player they should consider targeting if he becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1. At a minimum, he would help improve their middle six, especially when noting that he can play both down the middle and on the wing. NHL Draft Lottery: Five players the Canucks could target if they retain the 15th pick

In an often fractured history of projecting prospect potential, the Vancouver Canucks have made just one NHL Draft selection in the No. 15 position. It may prove prudent. Article content Article content Scouts and management were in agreement at the 2022 selection process that winger Jonathan Lekkerimaki had the attributes — a shot that packs velocity and accuracy combined with a high hockey IQ — to eventually punch his ticket to 'The Show' as a roster regular. It could happen next fall. Article content And because Lekkerimaki looks like a gifted and dedicated player who could reach the true measurement of a wise draft play with 200 career NHL games, it's not a stretch to suggest the Canucks hope to double up on that promise in the 2025 NHL Draft on June 27 to 28 in Los Angeles. Article content In the live NHL Draft Lottery draw held Monday, the Canucks had a 97.9 per cent chance of choosing 15th overall and remained in that spot. The San Jose Sharks had the best shot at picking first (23.5 per cent) but the New York Islanders leapt up to claim it. The Utah Hockey Club won the second draw, but could only move up 10 spots to No. 4. It meant the Sharks got the second pick. Article content The 2025 NHL Draft Lottery results — Spittin' Chiclets (@spittinchiclets) May 5, 2025 Article content What the Canucks must weigh is the value of their pick in the draft-and-develop process. Or, perhaps, put it in play for a trade package to acquire a proven centre and prop up a position of great concern. Article content NHL prospects scout Shane Malloy authored The Art Of Scouting. He appears on Hockey Prospects Radio via the Sirius-XM NHL Network and is working toward a PhD in interdisciplinary studies. He labels draft picks from No. 23 to 32 'the death zone' because history shows only 40 per cent of players picked in that range actually hit the career 200-game mark. Article content Conversely, the 15th overall selection is in the 75 to 80 per cent category of making the NHL and sticking a long time. Malloy believes the Canucks have a legitimate shot at landing a good player. He expects this class will produce 19 players that will either be a No. 3 defenceman or better, or a second-line player or better. Article content So, there's an argument for keeping the pick and one for packaging it. Article content 'Trading that pick really depends on what you're getting back,' Malloy told Postmedia News on Monday. 'I wouldn't accept anything less than an elite No. 2 centre. And for a guy like Dylan Larkin, you would have to give up the 15th pick and something else. The Canucks' window is now and they don't have a push from below.' Article content Article content Malloy gets annoyed by the annual clamour for a consensus on draft rating, and pecking order for top prospects, because they often miss the mark. Article content Article content 'I don't follow the consensus because that's really dangerous and it goes against logical and practical decision-making,' stressed Malloy. 'But from my perspective, I would say this overall draft in terms of quantity is below average and the quality is average. An average is 59 players who will play 200 games or more in the NHL. Article content 'Part of the reason is Finland has no players coming out this year and the U.S. National Team Development Program is the weakest team I've seen in 25 years. Russia isn't as strong as normal, and when you add that up, it's probably another eight to 10 players in this draft.

New York Islanders, Utah HC Win Top Picks In 2025 NHL Draft Lottery

(Photo by Mike Stobe/NHLI via Getty Images) With a new, live format for the first time ever, the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery yielded some thrilling and unexpected results. The New York Islanders, who held the 10th-best odds heading into the lottery, vaulted into the No. 1 spot. It's their first pick inside the top 10 since taking Michael Dal Colle at No. 5 in 2014, and their fifth No. 1 pick in franchise history. In this millennium, the Islanders took John Tavares first overall in 2009, and goaltender Rick DiPietro at No. 1 in 2000. In their first two years of existence, they used their first-overall picks on Billy Harris in 1972 and Denis Potvin in 1973. Perhaps the Islanders' representative at the draft lottery brought the team good luck. After the departure of president and GM Lou Lamoriello on Apr. 22, dynasty defenseman Ken Morrow stepped up, as the team's longtime director of pro scouting. 'The Hockey Gods smiled on us,' Morrow said after the lottery result was announced. 'I can't tell you how thrilled I am for Islanders fans, ownership and our entire organization.' NHL commissioner Gary Bettman presides over the the drawing for the first overall pick awarded to ... (Photo by Jared Silber/NHLI via Getty Images) The unveiling of the results proved suspenseful, as the league brought its lottery-ball machine to center stage for the first time. Rather than pre-drawing the lucky numbers and having deputy commissioner Bill Daly reveal the results on ordered cards, 14 numbered balls were placed in the machine. Four balls were drawn at 30-second intervals to determine the first winner, then a second drawing took place to determine the second winner. As the number on each ball was revealed, a real-time chart showed which teams dropped out of contention, and which teams saw their odds increase. Before the fourth and final ball was revealed for the first drawing, the four teams with the best remaining odds to win were the Islanders (10th), the Chicago Blackhawks (second), the Philadelphia Flyers (fourth) and the Pittsburgh Penguins (ninth). The San Jose Sharks (first), Seattle Kraken (sixth) and Buffalo Sabres (seventh) remained in the running, at lower odds. The NHL's rules now prohibit a winning team from moving up more than 10 places, so here's how the odds looked heading into Monday's drawings: That rule came into play in the second drawing, which was won by the Utah Hockey Club. They moved up from 14th to fourth. Technically, Utah is a brand-new team, so this is just its second draft lottery. Last year, Utah's first-round picks were centers Tij Iginla at No. 6 and Cole Beaudoin at No. 12. The 2024 lottery did not change the draft order at all — the first time that had happened since 2010. After finishing last in the league standings, the San Jose Sharks claimed the first-overall pick for the first time in their franchise's history, and used it to pick Canadian center Macklin Celebrini. The Sharks improved by five points in 2024-25, but finished last again. This year's lottery results bump them down to the No. 2 pick. Here is the full 2025 draft order of the non-playoff teams: Celebrini was one of just six players from his draft class to play NHL games, and the only one to stay on the roster for the full 2024-25 season. He turns 19 in June, making him the youngest player to play more than four games in the NHL this year. Celebrini's 25 goals ranked him second among all rookies, and his 63 points tied him for second place. On Monday, he was announced as a Calder Trophy finalist for rookie of the year alongside Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson, 21, and Calgary Flames goaltender Dustin Wolf, 24. For the 2025 draft, the presumptive top prospect is Canadian defenseman Matthew Schaefer. He's a smooth-skating defenseman with good puck skills who could be a good long-term fit with Noah Dobson on the Islanders' blue line. But there are some question marks attached to his name. Between a bout of mono and a broken clavicle suffered at the 2025 world junior championship, he was limited to just 17 games with the OHL's Erie Otters this season. With the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery in the books, attention now turns to the draft itself. With the IIHF's world U18 championship just completed, the next gathering of top prospects will be the 2025 NHL Scouting Combine in Buffalo from June 1-7. The draft itself will be held in a new, decentralized format on June 27-28. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman will call the names of the drafted prospects at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles while teams set up their war rooms in their home markets.
