Columbia County Chamber hosts 2025 National Civics Bee

GROVETOWN, Ga. (WJBF) – The Columbia County Chamber of Commerce presented the local round of the 2025 National Civics Bee. The Civics Bee took place at Grovetown High School and featured 20 Middle School students from across the CSRA. These students were selected after submitting essays about their ideas on how to improve their local community. I spoke with the President and CEO of the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce, Russell Lahodny, about the importance of students being educated in civics. 'I think one of the biggest things for us is we want to make sure that we have kids who are educated, and we want to build good citizens. This is a great opportunity to get them involved to start understanding what it means to be a good citizen and even what it might mean to be a leader themselves in their community, and I think this is a great way to do it.' said Lahodny. Civics is the understanding of the government process as well as the rights and duties of being a citizen in the United States. Lahodny said it great to see these students taking an interest in our government. 'Now we get an opportunity to see really what their education is on that level, but again to me it's the excitement that they've gotten out of the competition just to this point and to have that opportunity to move on to the state round possibly and even the national round.' Lahodny said, The judges were Dr. Tom Clark with Fort Eisenhower, Jodi Lott who is a former Georgia State Representative and Dr. Jackson Drumgoole with WellStar Health. While the competition is an analysis of the students it is also a display of the teachers. 'I think it's a great reflection of our schools, I think the participation, they really appreciated the program and what we were doing and they really expressed a lot of excitement over it.' said Lahodny. The top 3 students from the event will advance to the state finals in Atlanta with the potential to move on to the national championships in Washington D.C. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. EHCA residents bust a move at adult prom

Residents of Erie Homes for Children and Adults (EHCA) left it all on the dance floor at their spring adult prom. The prom was hosted by Seneca High School's National Honor Society (NHS). Happy birthday, Erie! Friday marks 230 years since city's founding 'As a member of National Honor Society we figured it would be fun to do something a little bit out of the box, and Olivia mentioned that her mom works here and she knows the residents well, and we just loved the idea of incoportating them into a prom and wanting to have a fun time,' said Abby Propst, sophomore at Seneca High School. The night included a live DJ and a variety of snacks provided by Pepsi, Perkins and NHS students. The theme of the prom was 'April Showers Bring May Flowers,' and Propst said planning took place every day to make the night special for the guests. 'We would host craft days every day after school, pretty much mostly every Friday, and that's how we got all these amazing crafts to get done and the balloon arches and pretty much everything to tie it all together,' said Propst. 2025 National Civics Bee held at Mercyhurst University Wednesday Director of the MOVE program for EHCA, Debra Niland, shared how heartwarming it was to see the residents in full bloom in their best outfits. 'This is an opportunity for them to let loose, have fun, get dressed up, and they did promposals for each other, they brought each other corsages,' said Niland. 'I'm so thrilled for our residents, the individuals that come here to the MOVE program, because we try to provide these opportunities for them, and it does take a village, so we do appreciate the community stepping up and offering to do things for us as well.' 'It is just such an honor to even, dancing with them now, bringing it all together and just realizing the hard work that went into it that, they're appreciating it, and it's just a good accomplishment for NHS to incorporate them,' said Propst. EC Chamber prepares for area finalists to compete in local civics bee competition

EAU CLAIRE — Tina Probst from the Eau Claire Chamber of Commerce said that everything is nearly set for them to host 20 students at a regional National Civics Bee competition in Eau Claire. 'We have 20 finalists selected, and all 20 have been confirmed,' said Probst, the chamber's director of workforce and emerging talent. 'But we did receive more than that; we had a good handful of submissions this year.' Earlier in the year, the chamber was accepting submissions from middle school students grades six through eight for the 2025 National Civics Bee, where students had to identify a community issue, propose a solution and highlight individual organizations that could collaborate on the issue. On April 12, the top 20 of those submissions will compete in a live competition at DeLong Middle School. While the chamber is in their second year of participating in this competition, this is the first year that they will be able to host a local event for area finalists. 'Last year, we did plan on hosting a local competition, however with the healthcare closure we had to adjust our plans with it. We had a pool of students that had submitted for the Eau Claire Chamber's local competition, but those finalists were just transferred to Wausau.' Probst said local students participating will be representing DeLong, South Middle School, Northstar Middle School, Ladysmith Middle and High School, Somerset Middle School, Colfax Middle and High School and Durand-Arkansaw Middle and High School. 'I think it is going fantastic,' she said. 'I work with chambers from across the state that are also hosting this competition, and the Eau Claire Chamber was able to see the most essay submissions come through, which is really encouraging because we are seeing that young people have these amazing ideas about what we can do to improve our communities and who can be at the table for it. It gives me a lot of encouragement about the generation that is coming up, and the students that are going to be future leaders some day.' Now preparing for the upcoming competition, Probst said, 'We are very fortunate to have all of our volunteer positions for judges and for our MC filled. At this point, what we are doing is really making sure that the students know they are supposed to be studying for this event and talking with the parents, helping them to understand what to expect so that they can communicate that to their child. And we are planning the layout of the event and the content… There is not a ton left to do other than making sure that students are aware of what is happening and that we are preparing them for what they can expect.' A cash prize will be awarded to the top three finalists and all three will move onto the state competition in Madison. From there, a winner at the state level will get the opportunity to participate in a national competition. 'This is an event where if you want your faith restored in humanity, come listen to the ideas of these middle schoolers,' said Probst. 'We would really encourage anyone from the public that wants to attend, they are welcome to. It is a free event, it is family friendly and it is a great way to highlight the amazing talent and amazing ideas that are coming out of our local schools here.'

Local middle schoolers vie for chance to compete in National Civics Bee

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – Middle school students sharpened their knowledge of civics Monday night for a chance to participate in the 2025 National Civics Bee. The Rochester Chamber of Commerce invited local students to address various topics designed to allow them to share their thoughts on important issues impacting their communities. (WROC/Trinity Wilson) Nineteen students from nine counties in and around Rochester competed in three rounds Monday night. Gates-Chili students spoke with News 8 about two topics: Students not getting enough sleep, and gang violence. Gananda cheer celebrates state title 'I wanted to focus on that cause I am many different things, and I feel like it's a large problem cause that's what we look up to in the world as it is – and I feel like kids should understand, that's not what you should look up to,' said Brycen Ashten. 'I think it's very important for students to get their education and if they get enough sleep, that may help them.' The competition includes various prizes, including a $1,000 cash prize for the state champ. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
