Ireland U20 men's and women's squads announced for summer tournaments
THE MEN'S AND women's squads that will represent Ireland in their respective U20 tournaments this summer have been announced. Neil Doak's side will compete in the men's U20 World Championship with Connacht's Éanna McCarthy captaining the 30-player squad for the trip to Italy. 'It's been a challenging season,,' says Doak, 'but this group has shown resilience and real character. We know the competition at the World Championships will be fierce, but these experiences have made us stronger. We're looking forward to the opportunity to test ourselves on the world stage.' Niamh Briggs has named a 35-person squad for the women's U20 2025 Summer Series in Wales, with Wicklow's Jane Neill named as captain again for the second year of the competition. 'This competition represents a significant step in our player development pathway. It provides a valuable opportunity for young athletes to challenge themselves against top-level opposition, experience the demands of an international environment, and continue their progression toward senior rugby,' Briggs said. Chicago's Soldier Field to host Premier League Summer Series soccer games this summer
Chicago will be hosting Premier League soccer games this summer as the English soccer league returns to the U.S. for its 2025 Summer Series. On Wednesday, July 30, Soldier Field will host a doubleheader featuring four Premier League clubs — AFC Bournemouth, Everton, Manchester United, and West Ham United, the Chicago Sports Commission announced. West Ham United and Everton will play in the first match beginning at 5:30 p.m. that day. Manchester United and AFC Bournemouth will play at 8:30 p.m. This will be the first time Chicago has hosted a matchup of Premier League teams. It comes after record-breaking attendance at a "Premier League Mornings Live" fan festival in Lincoln Park last September, the Chicago Sports Commission pointed out. "Chicago is the greatest sports city in America, and I am thrilled to join the Chicago Sports Commission in welcoming the Premier League to Soldier Field this summer," Mayor Brandon Johnson said in a news release. "This event will showcase the beauty and diversity of Chicago to viewers around the world and demonstrate our ability to host major high-profile events of all varieties." Premier League doubleheaders are also set for MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, close to New York City on Saturday, July 26, and for Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Saturday, Aug. 3. This is the second Premier League Summer Series in the U.S. The first was in 2023 — in which more than 265,000 fans turned out and Chelsea FC won the series. Chicago is the only new city to host this year. "We are delighted to be bringing the Premier League Summer Series back to the United States," Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters said in a news release. "We know from our previous tournament and Premier League Mornings Live events that we and our clubs have incredibly loyal and passionate fans in the U.S. who get up early to follow their teams during the season." Ticket registration is now open, the Premier League said. Registered fans may buy tickets through an exclusive pre-sale on Thursday, March 13, and general ticket sales will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, March 14.
