Fans have just days to watch 'favourite ever rom-com' before it's axed by BBC

Starring Katherine Heigl, the queen of rom-coms, the blockbuster is available to stream for free on BBC iPlayer, but only until June 16. If you like romantic comedies, chances are, you've heard of 27 Dresses. It's the 2008 rom-com directed by Anne Fletcher that sees Katherine Heigl take the reins as the film's leading lady. ‌ A bridesmaid for 27 weddings but never the bride, Jane Nichols (Heigl) is always putting others first, especially her younger sister, Tess. So when Tess decides to get married to Jane's boss, also the man our leading lady has secretly loved forever, Jane must grapple with all the emotions and drama that entails. ‌ That is until she meets Kevin (James Marsden), a cynical wedding journalist who challenges Jane and her beliefs. What follows are achingly familiar rom-com tropes that somehow just work, as Jane tries to find love and her happily ever after. With a screenplay penned by Aline Brosh McKenna, the film also stars Malin Åkerman, Edward Burns, Melora Hardin, Maulik Pancholy, and Judy Greer — rounding out a stellar supporting cast. 27 Dresses is available to stream on BBC iPlayer for the next seven days. The film was a huge success, grossing $162.7 million at the worldwide box-office against a $30 million budget. However, it received mixed reviews from critics upon its release. While one reviewer said: 'Hugely enjoyable, frequently funny romantic comedy with a superb script and a terrific central performance from Katherine Heigl.' Another critic acknowledged the film's lack of originality, yet felt it was a good watch: 'Something old, something borrowed... but still an assured, perfectly decent popcorn pleaser that sees the limber, likeable Heigl consolidate her Knocked Up lustre. Add sparky his/her chemistry and you've got a well-turned-out chick flick.' ‌ Praise for Heigl ran abound, with one critic writing: 'It really is Heigl's film, and she sells both the enthusiasm of someone high on the brilliant potential of love and versed in combatting the barbs of cynicism.' However not all were left impressed: 'What a maddening waste of Katherine Heigl this insipid romantic comedy is.' Audience reviews proved to be a mixed bag as well, with one viewer writing: 'Without a doubt my favourite rom com! Lighthearted and fun with a great soundtrack. Heigl and Marsden are great together! Many laughs!' ‌ While another wrote: 'This movie is one of my favourite movies now. I love everything about this movie. I wish there were still movies like this. The romcom and set up of this whole story line is amazing and the choices for the actors/actresses was amazing as well.' And although some weren't too taken with the film's premise: 'Boring. Seen this type of tripe too many times to have anything good to say about it.' Others thought 27 Dresses has stood the test of time: 'I've seen this movie more times than I can count. This may very well be the last great rom-com made. I'm glad it has aged so well!!' 27 Dresses is available to stream for free on BBC iPlayer till June 16. It's also available to rent on Amazon Prime Video.

Rom-Com Hunk, 51, Turns Heads in Rare Public Appearance With 26-Year-Old Girlfriend

Rom-Com Hunk, 51, Turns Heads in Rare Public Appearance With 26-Year-Old Girlfriend originally appeared on Parade. James Marsden, 51, and his girlfriend, Dutch model Frederique Brons, 26, who are not often seen together in public, were recently spotted enjoying each other's company. The couple, who began spending time together in 2023, were photographed together at the 2025 French Open, held on June 1, as reported by Town & Country. For the event, Marsden, who has been in rom-coms, like 27 Dresses and The Best of Me, wore a white shirt underneath a casual blue suit. He accessorized his look with white sneakers and sunglasses. Brons opted for a striped polo shirt, white pants, a white baseball hat, and a pair of sunglasses. Town & Country reported that Marsden and his ex-wife, Lisa Linde, were married for 11 years until 2011. The former couple are parents to two adult children, Jack, 23, and Mary, 20. The actor and his ex-girlfriend, Rose Costa, also share an 11-year-old son, William. During a February 2025 interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show, hosted by Kelly Clarkson, Marsden spoke about his dynamic with his children. He said that his sons and daughter are not overly impressed with his acting career. "They are very proud of me. They like what I do, but they also love for me to be dad. They are enjoying the ride but for the longest time, they were sort of wonderfully underwhelmed by what I do. They're like, 'You're not that great,'" said Marsden during the interview. He then clarified that Mary has been helping him prepare for certain roles. He said, however, that she isn't afraid to give him her honest opinion when they are practicing his lines. "My daughter has now gotten into it. She reads lines with me. But she's also just brutally honest. Like, 'Don't do that thing with your eyebrow. That was fake. Do it again. Do it again!'" said Marsden while speaking to Clarkson. Clarkson then interjected that Marsden's daughter was acting like a director. The actor agreed with the talk show host's assessment. Rom-Com Hunk, 51, Turns Heads in Rare Public Appearance With 26-Year-Old Girlfriend first appeared on Parade on Jun 5, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jun 5, 2025, where it first appeared.

Katherine Heigl Is Open to a '27 Dresses' Sequel — On One Condition

Could a sequel to 27 Dresses be in the works? Katherine Heigl, who starred in the popular 2008 romantic comedy alongside James Marsden, Malin Akerman and Judy Greer, seems to be really open to the idea. "I think that we're in talks about a 27 Dresses sequel, which, if done right and with that cast I love so much, would definitely be something I'd be willing to sort of compromise the mom time to do," the Grey's Anatomy alum, 46, told E! News. 27 Dresses follows Jane (Heigl), who has been a bridesmaid 27 times but has never been married. She's secretly in love with her boss until he unexpectedly gets engaged to her own sister (Akerman). Jane then meets a journalist (Marsden) who's writing a story about her 'always a bridesmaid' life. They eventually fall in love, and she finally becomes a bride herself. Heigl previously expressed interest in reprising her role for a follow-up film. "I want to do a sequel," she told Entertainment Tonight back in 2019. "Unfortunately we can't quite get the rights…I think it would be awesome to see what are their lives like 10 years later? Do they end up together? I personally think they did." She added at the time, "I think [Tess and George] have, like, three kids and she's made Jane the godmother every time, so Jane has to plan the christenings and the baby showers and the gender-reveal parties, but then all the other bridesmaids [also] make her the godmother. But [Jane and Kevin] can't get pregnant."

Katherine Heigl says she's ‘in talks' to do a 27 Dresses sequel

Katherine Heigl appears ready to always be the bridesmaid and never the bride — again. The actress, dog food maven and mother of three recently spoke to E! News about a sequel to her beloved 2008 romantic comedy, and teased that there's a reason to hope that it'll walk down the aisle at some point in the future. 'I think that we're in talks about a 27 Dresses sequel, which, if done right and with that cast I love so much, would definitely be something I'd be willing to sort of compromise the mum time to do,' Heigl said. 'It would have to be done right, but you don't want to diminish the first one at all,' she said. 'You want to add to it. So, if we can do that and pull it off, I think that would be really fun. And I think they're working on that.' In 27 Dresses, Heigl played Jane, a 27-time bridesmaid who must again serve in someone else's wedding — her sister's — who is marrying her boss and crush. The film also starred Judy Greer, Malin Akerman, Krysten Ritter and Edward Burns. Heigl — who most recently was seen opposite Sarah Chalke in Netflix's Firefly Lane — isn't the only one who is open to a 27 Dresses sequel. James Marsden, who played her love interest in the movie, said to 'bring it on' in 2023. 'That movie weirdly has legs that I'm not sure I anticipated it having,' he said at the time. 'Just a fanbase that people — when they talk about romantic comedies — you don't really see too many of those made nowadays.'
