ASEAN Sec-Gen Hails ‘Twin Successes' Of 46th Summit With Vision 2045, Timor-Leste Admission

By Mohd Iswandi Kasan Anuar JAKARTA, May 28 (Bernama) -- ASEAN Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn on Wednesday hailed the 46th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur as a success, citing the adoption of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and progress toward Timor-Leste's full membership as landmark outcomes. Held under Malaysia's 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship themed 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', the two-day summit embodied the spirit of ASEAN's collective aspirations, he said. Kao highlighted the 'twin successes' of the summit - the launch of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 with four strategic plans, and the consensus to admit Timor-Leste as ASEAN's 11th full member, with formal induction expected at the October summit. 'Leaders reached consensus on Timor-Leste's full membership during the summit's retreat session,' he said, noting that a dedicated Timor-Leste unit has been established within the ASEAN Secretariat to support the accession process. He made the remarks during a briefing on the summit's outcomes—including the 2nd ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit—attended by the diplomatic corps and media at the ASEAN Headquarters. Reflecting on the overall outcome, Kao said the summit was successful in terms of participation, substance, and organisation, achieving its intended goals, with a total of 22 outcome documents adopted during the summits. On internal challenges, Kao said ASEAN leaders engaged in 'frank and candid' discussions, particularly regarding the crisis in Myanmar and regional economic pressures. 'External meetings with China and the GCC also emphasised trust-building both within the region and with external partners,' he stressed.

Fahmi: ASEAN Summit a resounding success, draws global media attention

SEPANG — Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil (picture) has described the hosting of the 46th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Kuala Lumpur as a tremendous success. Fahmi, who is also the MADANI government spokesman, said the summit, which began on Monday, received widespread coverage from both local and foreign media. 'Alhamdulillah, I observed that the 2nd ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit were held successfully. 'Generally, feedback from the public and international media indicates that the hosting of these summits was indeed successful,' he told Bernama here today. Earlier, Fahmi bid farewell to Oman's Deputy Prime Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Affairs, Sayyid Asaad bin Tarik al Said, and his delegation as they departed from the Bunga Raya Complex at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at 2.33 pm. Fahmi said the successful hosting of the summits proved that Southeast Asia can play a strategic role in matters of investment and broader global issues. 'We know that member countries have their own views on certain issues, but under the ASEAN umbrella, we can ensure that Southeast Asia remains stable, making it an attractive destination for both investors and tourists. This is a highly positive and encouraging outcome,' he said. He also said that the success of the ASEAN-GCC and ASEAN-GCC-China summits demonstrated ASEAN's potential to act as a connector between continents. 'Despite differing views, we can still find common ground within this stability to pursue progress and shared prosperity,' he said. The 46th ASEAN Summit, which concluded yesterday, brought together Southeast Asian leaders for high-level discussions focused on regional cooperation, economic integration and geopolitical stability. As Chair of ASEAN 2025, Malaysia hosted both the 2nd ASEAN-GCC Summit and the inaugural ASEAN-GCC-China Summit to strengthen inter-regional collaboration. The 47th ASEAN Summit is scheduled to be held again in Kuala Lumpur in October, under Malaysia's continued chairmanship. — BERNAMA
