Uncover the rich history of the Vancouver Public Library's central branch as it celebrates its 30th year
People wearing face masks enter the Vancouver Public Library's central branch after it and four other branches reopened with limited services, in Vancouver, on Tuesday, July 14, 2020. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Darryl Dyck As the Vancouver Public Library's central branch celebrated its 30th anniversary at the end of May, staff reflected on the milestones and memorable moments experienced at the building since it opened on West Georgia Street in 1995. Its inception had been the result of a public referendum calling for a new facility to replace the aging VPL building on Burrard Street and those memorable moments, says Kay Cahill, VPL's director of Information Technology and Collections, had begun to mount before the ribbon had even been cut. 'The move from the old building to the new was really quite something. There were 600 or so truckloads of materials that had to be transported,' she says. An invitation to the public to take part in what the library called 'Operation Bookworm' saw book lovers come together to form a human chain and pass the hundreds of publications from the old library building to the new. 'I believe the first book to arrive was actually the World Bibliography of Bibliographies,' says Cahill, adding how the library now offers up over one million publications in its collection. The interesting tales and tidbits created during those first few weeks would be joined by countless others as time went on, giving the library a history at 30 years that is storied in a way rarely associated with buildings of such youth. Few people will know, for example, that if you enter the doors of the central branch and look directly upwards, you will see a time capsule, buried between levels 2 and 3, that was made and hidden during the library's 16th anniversary in 2010. Naturally, Cahill refuses to divulge what exactly can be found inside. It would spoil the secret ahead of its opening in 2040, she says, but she does disclose that its contents revolve around the theme 'One Book, One Vancouver.' The World Bibliography of Bibliographies might have been the first text to enter the library's front doors, but the most impressive publication to do so is one that has been passed down for centuries, and through more hands than just those of the Vancouver public. A Breviarium, a medieval manuscript written by nuns in a German convent in 1430, is kept with other old and rare books in a special, climate-controlled vault on the library's seventh floor. It is the facility's oldest artefact, sitting alongside periodicals, maps and manuscripts from B.C.'s first explorers. Cahill says the library is currently working to digitize some of the ancient texts to allow the public to peruse them safely online. Until then, it can only be viewed upon request and under the guidance of library staff. Cahill, who joined the library on its 10th anniversary and is celebrating her 20th year with the facility as it celebrates its 30th, has witnessed firsthand some of the change and growth the library has been subject to over the decades. She notes the reclaiming of the 8th and 9th floors that, for the first 20 years of the library's lifespan, were leased out to the provincial government. It was a major turning point for the facility, she says, namely because the space was repurposed to become the library's rooftop garden – one of few rooftop spots in Vancouver where one can enjoy the sun without paying $30 for a cocktail. The Inspiration Lab, which opened in May 2015, features analog-to-digital conversion stations where visitors can digitize their old videotapes and photo negatives. A particularly fond memory of Cahill's is of one man who arrived at the lab with a pillowcase stuffed with videotapes, not realizing, in his excitement to digitize them all, that the project would take at least three weeks to complete. The space is also home to green screens, computers with editing and graphic design software, and recording studios available to be used by musicians and podcasters. 'There's actually a really inspirational story about a busker who busked on Granville Street for years and years and was constantly asked whether or not he had CDs of his music,' recalls Cahill. 'He was able to come into the library, make a recording, use the software to do the editing, and then he was able to make his CD and have that available for people to buy. It changed his whole way of being.' Musical instruments – guitars, ukuleles, violins, keyboards – are also available to be rented, and Cahill says the library 'works really hard' to make the public aware that the facility is about more than just books. 'It's always going to be a journey of exploration when you come to the library,' she says, touching on how the space is a place of community connection and a hotbed of creativity when it comes to the worlds of music, art, writing, and film. Film buffs will likely know that the central branch building has featured in numerous movies and TV series, including The Flash, Supergirl, Altered Carbon, Battlestar Galactica, and the Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi action flick The 6th Day, where it was blown to smithereens. With such interesting tidbits making up much of the library's history, Cahill expects the Vancouver public to come out in full force for the guided tour that has been put in place to celebrate the 30th anniversary. There's plenty more to be learned, she says, and countless other accomplishments to acknowledge regarding the library's literary programs and First Nations connections. The June 12 tour is a drop-in event starting at 6 p.m., although Cahill recommends swinging by in advance. With over 1.5 million visitors having visited the library in 2024 and much of the Vancouver public hankering to be a part of its ongoing history, there could be a queue.

Hollyoaks boss reveals dramatic 30th anniversary stunt and major storyline for huge month of celebration
HOLLYOAKS boss Hannah Cheers has revealed all about the soap's upcoming 30th anniversary, confirming a stunt and huge storyline details. The Channel 4 soap has undergone a huge revival in the last year with boss Hannah at the helm with ratings surging by more than a third. 3 3 3 The executive producer was forced to make tough decisions to cut the show from five episodes per week to just three - with the episode length slashed further. But after a year of painful decisions and hard work - it has paid off. Hollyoaks was second only to EastEnders at this weekend's British Soap Awards - taking home three gongs. And now the show is heading full speed ahead towards its 30th anniversary in October - and it will be a month-long celebration. Hannah said: 'In that week, we want to make it a celebration across the whole month really because we can't physically fit all of the characters into that. 'So that's why it's kind of becomes a bit more of a challenge in terms of which stories that you really want to hear about and focus on. 'But obviously there just needs to be enough of a sense of nostalgia in terms of Hollyoaks' origin story and everything that we love and know about the show. 'But then also the kind of characters that are going to be able to shake things up and create jeopardy and danger and spit things out in a different way at the end of that. 'And I want it to be where you can't take your eyes off the screen levels of energy, but also with absolutely kind of surprising but searing moments of heartache and good tears, happy tears, sad tears, tears and shock and try and celebrate all things Hollyoaks in a very efficient three by 18 and a half minute format.' And while there won't be a feature-length episode, there will be another shock coming - one fans will love. Clare Devine returns to the village 'There is something else that will be a huge delight and a real nod to Hollyoaks' origin story,' she revealed. 'That will happen in the third episode of the week, which I absolutely cannot talk about, but is going to be incredibly exciting.' Hannah added: 'You can't do a Hollyoaks commemoration without some kind of spectacle. So there will be a stunt.' And more than that Hannah also revealed a huge battle between two Hollyoaks titans will take centre stage for October. Having recently returned from the dead to the village after 12 years, Clare Devine is back to find her missing 'daughter' Tori. However it will soon become clear that Tori - the biological daughter of serial killer Nico Blake - is wanted by her birth family, the Blakes too. And that's set to pit Clare against serial killer Jez Blake in the run up to the big anniversary. From Hollyoaks to Hollywood James Corden played a caretaker in the early days of the soap. The former American TV host doesn't have much positive to say about his time on the soap, claiming it was "hell on earth." Since his short-lived time on the show he has gone on to bigger things including smash hit comedy Gavin and Stacey. Rachel Shenton joined the soap as aspiring glamour model Mitzeee Minniver in 2010. Over two years her character was sent to prison, got pregnant and had a number of romantic affairs. Since leaving Hollyoaks she has won an Oscar for best live action short film, The Silent Child. Rachel has also starred in White Gold and All Creatures Great and Small Emmett J. Scanlan played gangster turned anti-hero Brendan Brady. Emmett played the love interest of Steve Hayes, with their romance delighting fans until it turned violent. Since his departure Emmett has appeared in Peaky Blinders, The Fall, Gangs of London and even appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Emma Rigby joined Hollyoaks when she was 15 as Hannah Ahsworth. Hannah's eating disorder storyline was the first of it's kind on TV while other plots included being caught in a fire, gangland drug dealing and running away. Since leaving the soap in 2010 Emma has gone on to star in ABCs Once Upon a Time in Wonderland as the Red Queen. Other roles include guest appearances in Death In Paradise, Ripper Street and Fresh Meat Nico Mirallegro got his big break with Hollyoaks starring as emo Barry 'Newt' Newton. Nico's main storyline in the soap was developing schizophrenia which culminated in a suicide pact. He left the soap in 2010 and went on to star in My Mad Fat Diary, Our Girl, Rillington Place, The Ark and Common, Penance, as well as the Mike Leigh movie Peterloo and was nominated for a Bafta for his role in period drama The Village. Ricky Whittle used Hollyoaks as a stepping stone to break America. He played one of the soap's resident hunks, Calvin Valentine, from 2006 to 2011 - when he was killed off at his wedding. After leaving the soap Ricky cracked America starring in teen drama The 100 and America Gods. He also appeared in Strictly Come Dancing in 2009. Warren Brown joined Hollyoaks in 2005 for a year as evil Andy Holt. His stint on the show consisted of date rape storylines and a crime spree, before eventually being killed off. After leaving Hollyoaks, Warren became a big hitter in TV playing DS Justin Ripley in Luther, as well as major roles in a number of dramas including Liar, The Responder, Homefront and Good Cop. Wallis Day played Holly Cunningham in the soap for years before leaving. In 2021 Wallis won the role of Batwoman in DC's series, taking over from Ruby Rose. 'Well, yes, obviously we've got two kind of Hollyoaks titans here,' Hannah said. 'We've got kind of very iconic Hollyoaks faces. And it' not an accident that they are both in the show in the run up to the 30th anniversary.'

Star Awards will celebrate its 30th anniversary in July with a nostalgic show lineup
The first Star Awards took place in 1994 with just eight trophies given out in the same number of categories. This year, the annual ceremony honouring the best in Singapore's Chinese entertainment celebrates its 30th anniversary with many more awards than that to give out, as well as a show filled with nostalgia and memories. To be held on Jul 6 at The Theatre at Mediacorp, the awards and fashion extravaganza will take the theme 'Walking Through Time Together'. To commemorate three decades of Star Awards, familiar faces long retired from the screen will make an appearance, alongside celebrity guests from around Asia. All-Time Favourite Artistes throughout the years will come together for a big reunion, while a live orchestra will perform iconic drama theme songs. And, not only will artistes past and present share their stories and memories; viewers will also have a chance to share, revealed Jean Toh, Mediacorp's Vice President, Chinese Entertainment Productions and executive producer of Star Awards 2025. On the red carpet, artistes will be challenged to up their outfit game as there will also be viewer participation this year in the form of a 'fashion police' element involving interactive posts and voting, as well as a live call-in backstage segment. Red carpet walkers will, however, be collectively overshadowed by a a giant, larger-than-life Star Awards trophy 30 times the size of the real thing. WHO ARE THE NOMINEES? Nominees for the 2025 Star Awards were announced on May 20 with a mix of predictable veterans and new faces in the performance categories. In the running for Best Actor are Christopher Lee for his work in the drama Kill Sera Sera; Andie Chen (Born to Shine); Qi Yuwu (Once Upon a New Year's Eve); Richie Koh (Coded Love); and, nominated for the first time, Gavin Teo for his role in To Be Loved. Up for Best Actress are Chantalle Ng (Hope Afloat), Felicia Chin (I Do, Do I?), Hong Ling, Jesseca Liu (Unforgivable) and Jessica Hsuan (Kill Sera Sera). Best Supporting Actor nominees are Guo Liang (To Be Loved), Pierre Png (Moments), Xu Bin (Kill Sera Sera), Chen Hanwei and Chen Shu Cheng (Unforgivable). Meanwhile, Emerald Hill's Tasha Low scored her first nomination in an acting category for her work in Coded Love, alongside Cynthia Koh (Hope Afloat), Lynn Lim (Kill Sera Sera), Meixin (Born to Shine) and Ya Hui (Coded Love). "When I heard that I was nominated, I asked my manager, 'Are you sure?' Because I never thought I'd be nominated for an acting award," said Low. "I think I still have a lot to improve on, so it's a real honour." In the Best Rising Star category, nominees are Herman Keh, Joey Tay, Juin Teh, Tyler Ten and Ye Jia Yun. The drama that leads with the most number of nominations is crime drama Unforgivable, with 10 gongs including Best Drama Serial and Best Theme Song; followed by parenting-focused drama Born to Shine with seven nominations. WHAT ELSE IS NEW? The awards ceremony this year will see some fresh, new changes. One bit of news is that this year, the post-show party will return after a hiatus of six years, giving viewers a glimpse into candid moments and backstage reactions. Criteria for eligibility for some awards has shifted. In the category of the Top 10 Most Popular Artistes Award, for the first time, artistes who are nominees of any performance-based award will automatically qualify to run for the popularity award in the same year. Artistes who play the lead role or main host in a series with at least two episodes, as well as artistes who have a total of at least 13 episodes in a combination of roles, will also be eligible. Meanwhile, the Most Popular Rising Star award is for artistes with five or fewer years of experience, but now, artistes who receive the award three times will automatically be bumped up into the main Top 10 Most Popular Artiste Award category. And, the Best Rising Star award now allows for repeat nominations, as long as nominees continue to have five or fewer years of experience and have not won in the same category. Public voting is now open for the categories of Top 10 Most Popular Male and Female Artistes and Most Popular Rising Star awards, while other categories will open for voting on May 26. There's even a chance for voters to win something. Those who cast votes in the BYD Favourite Character categories will stand a chance to win a new BYD Sealion 7, an all-electric SUV valued at S$94,888.
