Star 36er returns to boost Bryce's hopes of Adelaide success
Bryce Cotton will have another potent weapon at his disposal at his new NBL club, with Adelaide re-signing star big man Montrezl Harrell on a one-year deal. A former NBA Sixth Man of the Year who boasts eight years' experience in the world's top league, Harrell posted significant numbers in his first campaign in Australia last season. Harrell averaged 20.5 points and 9.3 rebounds per game on his way to All-NBL Second Team selection, and became a fan favourite with his on-court theatrics in Adelaide. The 31-year-old will join Cotton in a potent combination after the five-time NBL MVP stunned the Australian basketball community last week by announcing his shift to the 36ers after exiting Perth in March. The 36ers also have Australian national team representatives DJ Vasiljevic and Isaac Humphries at their disposal to loom among the title front-runners, with the club looking to snap a championship drought dating back to 2002. 'We've really reworked our roster but Trez fits because of his unique skillset,' 36ers coach Mike Wells said. 'His basketball IQ will allow us to play different ways. Montrezl Harrell. Credit: AAP 'The player combinations with him involved will be difficult for teams to handle.' Harrell put up 24 points in just 25 minutes in his most recent NBL clash against the Wildcats in February - a performance that was overshadowed by Cotton pouring in 49 for Perth at RAC Arena. The 201cm big man's signing came a day after Cotton revealed his exit at the Cats had been fuelled by the club, who made the call to part ways with him as he scoped his options in free agency. 'As much as people say why did I leave the Wildcats, I didn't technically leave,' Cotton said on The EasyDay Show podcast. 'The Wildcats parted ways with me because I wasn't willing to give an answer back in March.'

Former Perth Wildcat Bryce Cotton speaks about move to Adelaide 36ers for the first time
Five-time NBL MVP Bryce Cotton has declared it was time for him to leave the Perth Wildcats and try something new after he signed a three-year contract with Adelaide 36ers. Cotton played for Perth for nine seasons, won five NBL MVP awards and three championships while dominating the league. It was initially expected he would move overseas but he seized upon a chance to continue playing in the NBL after being approached by Adelaide. Cotton said he'd relished his time in Perth but needed to experience change. 'It's very, very rare that you get to play anywhere professionally for the amount of time I did for the same team. I am grateful for that,' he said in an interview with the 36ers media department. 'I had a lot of memories in Perth, but sometimes the curtain closes and it's time for a new door to open. I feel like a great opportunity presented itself and it was what I felt was best for me and my family. We are super, super ecstatic to be embracing this new journey.' Cotton will re-unite with 36ers coach Mike Wells who was working as an assistant coach for Utah Jazz when the star shooter played for the NBA club in 2014. Cotton said being coached by Wells again was a reminder of how many quality people there are in the basketball industry. 'The longer you play this game the smaller the basketball world gets,' he said. 'Sometimes you re-connect with people you met from the past. This was a pretty cool aligning of the stars. 'I always respected him as a coach and a person. Being able to see how he handled Adelaide from afar – even last season I think he helped do a tremendous job of bringing a winning culture and winning mentality back. 'It's exciting now I get to be a part of that as well and try to help to continue to push that narrative forward.' Cotton is now aiming to lift the 36ers to success after several years of turbulence off the court which has included multiple coaching changes and significant player turnover.

Five-time MVP and Wildcats legend Bryce Cotton poised to make NBL switch
Don't miss out on the headlines from Basketball. Followed categories will be added to My News. The Adelaide 36ers are poised to announce the signing of five-time NBL MVP Bryce Cotton. In a shock move no one saw coming, the 36ers have swooped in to secure Cotton. Code Sports can confirm the Adelaide deal still requires NBL approval, but the Sixers are hopeful of announcing the former Perth Wildcats star on a multi-year deal as early as Friday. It's understood Cotton has agreed to join the 36ers on a three-year deal. Cotton was widely tipped to sign a lucrative deal in Japan under former Wildcats coach Trevor Gleeson, but Adelaide has won the race for his prized signature. The signing of a man regarded as the NBL's best import in the modern era will go down as one of the biggest signings in 36ers' history. Cotton joined the Wildcats in January, 2017, and instantly made an impact by breaking the NBL record for most points on debut (26 points v the Kings). He's been the constant face at the Wildcats through some of their most successful years, playing a key role in Perth's three NBL championships in 2017, 2019 and 2020. An eight-time All-NBL First Team selection, Cotton indicated in March that he would not return to Perth this season, with his entering free agency set to spark a bidding war. 'Man.. to the red army y'all have welcomed me with open arms from the time I first stepped onto Aussie soil till I scored my last basket of the season a few weeks back,' he wrote in March. 'I came at the backend of the season my first year only expecting to be here 6 weeks, and it turned into accomplishing things that no other player has achieved in their first 9 seasons in the history of the league. 'Perth will always be home, but it's time to say goodbye and see what else God has planned for me and my family.'
