[UPDATED] Asean-US Summit date yet to be confirmed, says foreign minister
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia, as the Asean chair, is waiting for confirmation from the United States on the date for the Asean-US Special Summit.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said: "Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has written to the US requesting an Asean-US Special Summit be held this year.
"We are waiting for a response from the US, and hopefully we will get some good news," he said ahead of the 46th Asean Summit tomorrow.
Meanwhile, regarding the review on the application of Ukraine as a sectoral dialogue partner, he said Asean senior officials would deliberate on it.
Mohamad chaired the Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting, the 29th Asean Political-Security Community Council Meeting and the 36th Asean Coordinating Council Meeting today.
That concluded the final ministerial-level meeting in preparation for the summit.
Later today, leaders will convene for the Asean-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Ministerial Meeting.
The GCC comprises Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman.
This year's summit is expected to be significant, featuring the second Asean-GCC Summit and the inaugural Asean-GCC-China Summit, a reflection of Asean's growing engagement with key international partners.
Thousands of people are expected to attend the summit, and strong security measures have been implemented around KLCC.
