The Awali Golf Club, the oldest such establishment in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), today tee off for a landmark weekend of golfing action, hosting the 60th edition of the Bahrain Open alongside the 36th Bahrain Ladies Open. Long considered a highlight on Bahrain's sporting calendar, the Bahrain Open boasts a rich history. While its early years saw dominance from British expatriate golfers, Bahraini players have increasingly taken centre stage since the mid1970s, and this year's competition is once again expected to see the Kingdom's top talents vying for the prestigious title. Defending champion Ahmed Mohamed Al Zayed will face stiff competition from the 2023 winner Khalifa Al Merisi, as well as six-time champion Nasser Yaqoob Saleh, among others. Members of Bahrain's national team are also participating, adding further prestige to the event. Organisers noted the significance of the victory, stating that the honour it carries extends far beyond the weekend, even without the coveted 'Green Jacket.' In the Bahrain Ladies Open, attention will be focused on young Bahraini golfers Habiba Maher and Fatima Albunni, both aiming for a breakthrough win that could significantly elevate the profile of women's golf in the Kingdom. The defending champion is Sarah Hobday, whose family has a strong tradition in the tournament, with both her daughter Suzy and son Sam having previously claimed victory.

Bahrain's Young Women Aim to Make History The spotlight in the women's competition falls on two rising Bahraini hopefuls: Habiba Maher and Fatima Albunni. Mujali Claims Hamad Trophy Victory at Awali Golf Club
Ateeq Yacoob Mujali produced a standout performance to win the Hamad Trophy at Awali Golf Club on Friday, in an event held in loving memory of the late Hamad Fares Al Qutami. The annual competition honours Al Qutami, who passed away two years ago, and is remembered fondly by the local golfing community for his grace, sportsmanship, and warm spirit. Many players paid tribute by wearing brooches adorned with his photo, while the event was generously sponsored by Mohamed Jalal. With the prestigious Bahrain Open just a week away, players in divisions one and two competed off the championship tees, the same layout set to be used for the upcoming national tournaments. Despite the challenging setup, Mujali emerged as the only player to shoot under his handicap, carding a gross 85 and a net 69 to secure the overall title. Nasser Yaqoob Saleh, a sixtime Bahrain Open champion, underlined his pedigree by shooting a gross 74 to claim the day's best gross medal. In division play, Benedikt Schwerm took the division three title with a net 70, while AbdulElah Fakhroo claimed division two honours with a net 71. Jasper Meinema won division one with a net 70. The trophy presentations were made by Faris Hamad Al Qutami, son of the late Hamad, alongside club captain Steve Newall and tournament director Balbir Singh. The evening concluded with a dinner catered by The Great Kabab Factory. Awali Golf Club now turns its attention to next weekend's marquee events – the 60th Bahrain Open and the 36th Bahrain Ladies Open – where the Kingdom's golfing elite will once again take centre stage.

Harris triumphs with net 60 in BMMI Heineken Medal
Darren Harris delivered a stellar performance, carding a net 60 to claim victory in the BMMI Heineken Medal, narrowly surpassing Susan Scott's impressive net 63. Nasser Yaqoob Saleh secured the best gross round with a solid 69, reinforcing his status as a strong contender for the upcoming Bahrain Open. Held on Friday, April 4, the tournament marked the first post-Eid competition, setting the stage for the 60th Bahrain Open and 36th Bahrain Ladies Open on April 18-19. Scott set an early benchmark with a gross 83 (net 63), but Harris's consistent play—featuring pars and bogeys—culminated in a career-best gross 82 (net 60). Mohamed Ali Al Kowari won Division One with a net 68, while Dowon Pyun edged Sun Kyu Kwak on countback in Division Two, both finishing with net 67. Ali Musbah took second in Division One (net 70), and Shuvendu Bakshi was runner-up in Division Three (net 67), though Scott dominated the category. Prizes, including the Russell Cup and Memorial Trophy, were presented by Captain Steve Newall and Tournament Directors Nathan Sundaresan and Rashed Fares Al Qutami. BMMI's continued support was acknowledged for ensuring another successful event.
