Brunei says Sultan in good health after hospitalisation in Malaysia
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah is in good health after being admitted to a hospital in Malaysia due to tiredness during a regional summit, Reuters quoted his office as saying on Tuesday. The 78-year-old monarch was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur and is expected to remain there for several days on the advice of Malaysian medical experts, his office added. "His Majesty... is in good health," the statement from his office read, noting that the Sultan had been feeling tired. Earlier, members of the media had inquired about the Sultan's absence from the Asean-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)-China Summit held Tuesday (May 27) afternoon, amid reports that His Majesty was undergoing treatment at IJN, according to Bernama. This was later confirmed by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is chairing this week's Asean leaders' summit. "He's a little bit tired and resting," Anwar said briefly during a press conference on the 46th Asean Summit and Related Summits at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. - Bernama

Malaysia, Bahrain reaffirm ties with exchange of seven MoUs
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Bahrain have reaffirmed their longstanding friendship and commitment to enhancing cooperation through the exchange of seven memoranda of understanding (MoUs). The ceremony on Tuesday (May 27) was witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Bahrain's Crown Prince and Prime Minister Salman Hamad Al Khalifa after their bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 46th Asean Summit and Related Summits. The meeting provided an opportunity to assess the progress of bilateral relations between Malaysia and Bahrain following Anwar's visit to Manama last February. The key areas of cooperation include investment and trade, Islamic finance and banking, defence, halal industry, semiconductors, agriculture and agri-commodities as well as connectivity, particularly in the tourism sector. Also present were Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir and Public Service Department director-general Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz. Among the MoUs exchanged was the Notes on the Establishment of a Political Consultation Mechanism, which institutionalises regular dialogue between the two countries' foreign ministries. In the realm of transport and digital innovation, Malaysia received two symbolic certificates -- the Global Logistics Sea to Air Partner Certificate and the Data Sovereignty Initiative Certificate presented to Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo. The certificates underscore Bahrain's recognition of Malaysia's growing leadership in logistics and digital governance. Malaysia and Bahrain also exchanged documents on Cooperation in Planning, Development and Promotion of Industrial Parks, exchanged between by Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry and Bahrain's Finance and National Economy Ministry. The bilateral engagement further expanded into public administration through Cooperation in Human Resource Management in the Public Sector, formalised between Malaysia's Public Service Department and Bahrain's Foreign Ministry, with a focus on knowledge-sharing and capacity-building in governance. Other MoUs include one in higher education between Universiti Sains Malaysia and the University of Bahrain, and another between the Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI) and the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), aimed at strengthening trade and investment linkages between the two countries. - Bernama

Timor-Leste to join Asean as full member by October, says PM
KUALA LUMPUR: Timor-Leste will become a full member of Asean by the 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits in October, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar said that Timor-Leste has worked hard to meet the requirements for Asean membership, and Malaysia is satisfied with the country's efforts. "Malaysia, Indonesia, and other countries have assisted in many ways to ensure they meet this precondition." "I would say we are quite satisfied. The decision is to agree that they will be accepted as a full member by the next session in October," Anwar said. He spoke during his exit press conference after the 46th Asean Summit and Related Summits at the KL Convention Centre. Anwar mentioned that Timor-Leste must meet "one or two" economic preconditions for full membership. "The consensus was to ensure their entry by October," he said. Currently, Asean's 10 member states are Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and the Philippines. Anwar briefly mentioned that Asean is negotiating a free-trade agreement with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). As the Asean chair this year, Malaysia aims to develop tangible programmes benefiting ordinary people by October. Anwar said various ministries and officials must start working on these initiatives for introduction by October. "So by October, we want to see results. We want to see real change that benefits people," he said. Anwar credited the success of the 46th Asean Summit to the hard work of government officials. "It is unprecedented that things usually discussed in October are being done now. We are moving forward, and this is a major change," he added. Anwar said the 46th Asean Summit achieved its objectives by bringing the GCC and China together. "This is our first inaugural meeting. There was a series of discussions and a detailed joint statement," he added. He said that discussions at the 46th Asean Summit were fruitful. "There is a dramatic change in attitude. The South China Sea was discussed, and we saw exchanges between the Philippines and China." "I'm not saying these issues can be resolved, but there is meaningful and positive engagement. That is the spirit of Asean," said Anwar. The second day of the 46th Asean Summit featured the second Asean-GCC Summit and the inaugural Asean-GCC-China Summit.
