Don't make teachers, students ‘test subjects' with frequent changes

KUCHING: Teachers and students must not be made test subjects through frequent changes in the national education agenda and system, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He said that although education ministers may change from time to time, the education sector should no longer be viewed within a five-year political cycle, but with a vision spanning the next 50 years. 'Don't change the minister, the system, the curriculum every five years after an election. Teachers and students are not test subjects; the system must be consistent. 'Don't sacrifice teachers just to create a personal legacy,' he told reporters after attending the national-level 54th Teachers' Day celebration here today. Also present was Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek. Earlier, in his speech at the event, Ahmad Zahid outlined several key directions for rebuilding the education ecosystem, including reforming teachers' workload so they can return to their core role. 'Teachers must also make smart use of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation to minimise (administrative) tasks and maximise time with students,' he said. He added that digital transformation should be prioritised and expedited to ease teachers' responsibilities. 'Digital proficiency must be accelerated. In this era, a technology-based culture of adaptation will ensure the sustainability of education. All teachers must be able to integrate technology, and students must become fluent and ethical digital users,' he said.

Teachers allowed to apply for transfers after two years service

KUCHING: Teachers can now apply for transfers after serving a minimum of two years, the education ministry said. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the applications could be submitted without any additional conditions. The move follows longstanding concerns from teachers about transfer delays and limited flexibility. The favourable news comes as teachers across Malaysia celebrate Teachers' Day. It was one of six pieces of good news announced by Fadhlina for educators nationwide, in conjunction with the 54th Teachers' Day celebration held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today. In addition, the Education Ministry has deployed 1,470 MyPg personnel (teaching assistants) for this year, with selected schools based on set criteria to receive two such assistants. As the third initiative, 32 teachers who are recipients of the IKON Award, Innovative Teacher Award, Special Education Award, and Distinguished Teacher Award in conjunction with the national-level Teachers' Day celebration will have the opportunity to gain experience working at international schools in the United Kingdom under the Global Immersion for Future-Ready Teachers (GIFT) Programme. For the fourth initiative, the Education Ministry will send selected teachers and officers abroad to attend short-term courses to acquire knowledge and experience in specific fields. The fifth initiative offers a 20 per cent discount on flight tickets for teachers to all destinations via the MH GoM portal, while the sixth involves a 20–30 per cent discount on book purchases made online using the MoE's DELIMa ID.

Sarawak Governor Pays Tribute To Teachers' Unwavering Dedication

KUCHING, May 16 (Bernama) -- The Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar expressed his heartfelt appreciation to teachers across the country for their unwavering commitment and dedication in ensuring the younger generation continues to receive quality education. In his message in conjunction with the 54th Teachers' Day celebration today, he said teachers are not spared from challenges, especially those serving in areas where infrastructure is still underdeveloped in having to deal with poor road access, unreliable water and electricity supply, and the hardship of teaching in remote locations far from their loved ones. 'Yet, despite these obstacles, our educators have never wavered in their dedication because they are very committed and dedicated to ensuring that our children receive the best education wherever they may be,' he said. The Governor said that in the face of these ongoing challenges, he believes the Education Ministry already has in place plans and initiatives that prioritise the welfare of teachers in the country, especially for those serving in rural and remote areas, ensuring they are equipped with adequate facilities to carry out their duties effectively. 'Above all, what is important is that we extend sincere appreciation and gratitude to them. They are individuals who not only impart literacy and knowledge, but also shape the values, identity and future of the nation's children,' he said. Wan Junaidi said the Teachers' Day celebration, which falls on May 16, holds deep significance as an opportunity to honour the services, dedication, and sacrifices of educators, who serve as the backbone of the nation's education system and the foundation for the country's progress and prosperity. "Without them, our children would be deprived of knowledge, lack foresight and struggle to meet the demands of today, let alone the increasingly complex challenges of the future,' he said. He said this year's theme, 'Teachers Drive Education Reform', is highly relevant as it reflects the crucial role of educators in enhancing the quality of education through system transformation, with teachers positioned as the heart of meaningful change. Beyond imparting knowledge, he said, teachers are also agents of mind development and a catalyst for a more holistic education transformation, especially in an era shaped by digitalisation and rapid technological advancements.

This can be in the form of poetry recitals or creating greeting cards shared on social media,' he added.
