Beloved Luther Vandross documentary finally at theaters, also airing on OWN in February
'A chair is still a chair…'
Luther Vandross fans the world over know every little hum, dip and run that follows those famous opening lyrics, and they're rejoicing that the acclaimed 2024 documentary 'Luther: Never Too Much' is finally available for public viewing.
Directed by Dawn Porter, the movie celebrates the vocal virtuoso and chronicles the obstacles and triumphs he had along the way to become one of the most decorated and influential artists of all time. Porter chronicles the story of Vandross from his formative years in Harlem, appearing in the Apollo Theater house band and the first episodes of 'Sesame Street,' through his ascendance to become the indisputable master of the love song.
Using a wealth of rarely seen archives, Vandross tells his own story along with the voices of his closest friends and musical collaborators including Jamie Foxx, Mariah Carey, Dionne Warwick, Valerie Simpson and Roberta Flack. The film unpacks the nuances and ironies of Vandross' storied career, exploring his personal life, health struggles, and a lifelong desire to be respected and understood.
Despite premiering early this month on CNN, few-and-far-between airings have left many diehards still unable to access the joyous and moving film.
