Brockville police looking for witnesses to incident near Salvation Army

Brockville police are asking for witnesses to come forward as they investigate a series of events Sunday near the Salvation Army building on First Avenue. Police said a 'possible explosion' was reported in the area at around 5 p.m. People at the scene suggested someone had fired a gun and had since left. No one was reported hurt. Police said in a post on Facebook Sunday there was a police operation in the area, but there was no risk to public safety. The post was later edited with an update to say an arrest had been made. On Monday, police issued a news release detailing the operation. 'Officers converged on the treed area behind the Salvation Army, locating one person who denied anybody there having a gun. It was believed that the individual police were looking for was a 59-year-old male that frequented that encampment,' Brockville police said in a news release. The 59-year-old was found and arrested, initially on a firearms charge, but he denied any involvement. 'A thorough search was conducted of the encampment area, which did not yield any evidence to any gun being discharged, nor any type of explosion,' police said. The man was later released unconditionally, police said. Brockville police say if anybody was in the area or witnessed anything they can contact call 613-342-0127.
