Odisha Vigilance arrests five forest officials for embezzlement of Govt funds
Bhubaneswar, May 14 (UNI) Odisha Vigilance has arrested five forest department officials for allegedly embezzling government funds amounting to Rs 80 lakh under the "Compensatory Afforestation Scheme" in the Kalahandi South Forest Division during the 2023–24 financial year. According to sources from Odisha Vigilance, an enquiry was initiated based on credible inputs regarding large-scale misappropriation of government funds under the scheme in the Jaipatna Range of Kalahandi Sout Forest Division. A verification of the plantations under the scheme was carried out by four teams comprising 25 officers from Odisha Vigilance. A thorough enumeration was conducted at several plantation sites within the Jaypatna Range. The enumeration revealed significant shortfalls in plantation work and misappropriation of funds at five sites. The investigation further uncovered that the plantation funds had been diverted to multiple fictitious labour accounts and withdrawn shortly afterward. Following the enquiry, prima facie evidence was established against the following forest officials: Sairendri Bag, Deputy Ranger and In-Charge of Jaipatna Range; Umesh Rout and Debraj Sunani, Foresters; and Ashok Kumar Sahu and Lalit Naik, Forest Guards — all posted in Jaipatna Range. They were found to be involved in the misappropriation of Rs79,54,635 by falsifying records and failing to carry out the plantation work during the 2023–24 fiscal year. In this connection, the Koraput Vigilance has registered a case on May 12 under Sections 13(2) read with 13(1)(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, as amended by the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018, and Sections 316(5), 318(4), 336(3), 340(2), and 61(2) of the BNS against the five officials. All five accused were arrested on Tuesday and produced before the Court of the Special Judge, Vigilance, Bhawanipatna. The investigation is ongoing. UNI DP ARN

Despite holidays, gold's record rally continues
Listen to article Despite holidays, gold surged to a new peak on Saturday, maintaining its record-breaking streak in Pakistan by mirroring international markets. The price of gold per tola surged by Rs1,620 to settle at Rs325,000. Likewise, the price of 10-gram gold rose by Rs1,389 to Rs278,635, according to the All Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association (APSGJA). International gold prices also saw an upward trend. As per APSGJA, the global rate stood at $3,084 per ounce (including a $20 premium), higher by $10. On Friday, gold had climbed by Rs2,380, closing at the previous record high of Rs323,380 per tola. Interactive Commodities Director Adnan Agar said that the Pakistan Mercantile Exchange (PMEX) was closed on Saturday, so no trading took place. Internationally, gold prices surged to a record high on Friday as investors flocked to the safe-haven asset amid fears of a global trade war triggered by US President Donald Trump's latest tariffs. Spot gold climbed 0.6% to $3,074.43 an ounce after hitting its 18th record high this year at $3,086.70 earlier in the session. Bullion was up 1.7% this week. US gold futures settled 0.8% higher at $3,114.30. "It continues to be safe-haven demand on ramped-up concerns about tariffs, trade and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty," that is supporting gold, said Peter Grant, Vice President and Senior Metals Strategist at Zaner Metals. Gold, traditionally seen as a hedge against economic and political instability, tends to thrive in a low interest rate environment. The Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index increased 0.4% in February, compared with analysts' expectation of 0.3% rise, similar to January's increase. The data isn't likely to change rate cut expectations very much, as it is only a little hotter than expected, Grant added. The Federal Reserve has held interest rates steady so far this year after three rate cuts in 2024, but hinted at potential rate cuts of half percentage points later in the year. The market is currently pricing in 63 basis points in Fed rate cuts by year-end, starting in July. Markets are now bracing for Trump's plans for reciprocal tariffs, which he intends to lay out on April 2. His policies are perceived as inflationary, posing a risk to economic growth and escalating trade tensions, analysts say. Spot silver fell 1.4% to $33.93 an ounce, platinum eased 0.7% to $979.10, and palladium was down 0.3% to $972.13. All three were set for weekly gains.

Dodgers reportedly bring back former GM, ousted Giants president Farhan Zaidi as special adviser
The offseason stockpile in Los Angeles has extended to the front office with news Monday that the Dodgers are bringing back former general manager Farhan Zaidi in a new role. Per multiple reports, the Dodgers are hiring Zaidi as a special adviser. In his role, Zaidi will also advise controlling Dodgers owner Mark Walter in his other sports interests, which include stakes in the Lakers, Sparks, Premier League soccer team Chelsea and the Professional Women's Hockey League. Zaidi was the general manager of the Dodgers from 2014-18. He previously honed his analytics-based approach as a data analyst and the assistant general manager of the Oakland A's under Billy Beane. Zaidi employed that approach to build a Dodgers roster that reached the postseason in each season under his watch that included trips to the World Series in 2017 and 2018. After the 2018 season, Zaidi left the Dodgers to take over as president of baseball operations for the rival San Francisco Giants. The Giants improved from 73-89 (.451) in the season before Zaidi's arrival to 107-55 (.635) and NL West champions in 2021. The Giants have finished in no better than third place since the 2021 division title, and they fired Zaidi in September following an 80-82 season. They replaced him with franchise icon and former MVP catcher Buster Posey. Now Zaidi returns to a Dodgers franchise with which he developed his reputation that's fresh of a World Series championship and an offseason acquisition spree that includes the addition of Japanese pitching phenom Roki Sasaki and two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell.
