6 gray whales found dead in a week in San Francisco Bay

May 30 (UPI) -- Six gray whales have been found dead in the wider San Francisco Bay Area in the last seven days, raising the total number of dead whales in the region to 15 for the year. According to a joint Wednesday statement from the California Academy of Sciences and The Marine Mammal Center, the most recent gray whale was found on Wednesday. The carcass was found near Alamere Falls at Point Reyes National Seashore, they said. Two whales were discovered on Monday, one near Alcatraz and the other near Point Bonita. A whale was discovered near Berkeley on Saturday, one near Fisherman's Bay on May 22 and one near Bolinas on May 21. Of the six whales, only the one found near Bolinas -- a yearling -- received a partial necropsy, the results of which were inconclusive, the organizations said. For the year, there have been 14 gray whales and one minke whale found dead in the San Francisco Bay Area. The organizations said suspected or probable vessel strikes appear to be the cause of death for three of the gray whales. "The Academy and partners at the Center have not responded to this many dead gray whales since the height of the Unusual Mortality Event in 2019," the statement said. The UME saw hundreds of gray whales become stranded along the west coat of North America between Dec. 17, 2018, to Nov. 9, 2023. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported a total 690 whales died during the UME in the United States, Mexico and Canada. The centers said they had responded to 14 stranded whales in 2019 and 15 in 2021. The increase in deaths comes amid what the organizations described as "an unusually high number" of whale sightings this year in the San Francisco Bay Area. They said 33 individual gray whales have been confirmed in the bay area via photo identification this year, which is up from six gray whales sighted in the bay for all of last year. "The reason or potential reasons behind the massive spike in sightings this year are still being investigated by researchers," it said. "It is expected that gray whales will be in the bay for another one to two weeks before continuing their annual northern migration to Arctic feeding grounds."

Gold Price Today: Yellow metal down 7% from record high on MCX, spot gold hits five-week low; Check key support levels

Gold prices erased early losses to steady on Thursday, helped by a weaker dollar and technical buying as investors await key U.S. economic data later in the day for further clarity on future interest rates. Spot gold was little changed at $3,179.07 an ounce as of 1102 GMT, after hitting its lowest since April 10 earlier in the session. U.S. gold futures fell 0.3% to $3,179.20. The dollar index slipped 0.3%, making gold cheaper for other currency holders. The U.S. and China this week agreed to temporarily slash harsh reciprocal tariffs, de-escalating a trade war and denting demand for gold as a safe haven. On Thursday, focus will turn to U.S. producer price index data due at 1230 GMT after softer-than-expected consumer data earlier this week. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech later in the day will be watched for clues on the Fed's rate path. Markets are expecting 50 basis points of rate cuts this year, with the reductions expected to start from October. Non-yielding gold tends to thrive in a low-rate environment. Elsewhere, spot silver dipped 0.4% to $32.09 an ounce and palladium rose 0.6% to $956.58. Platinum was up 0.7% at $982.53. The palladium market, which was in deficit in 2012-2024, will move into balance this year, with demand falling by 6% as a result of lower production of gasoline vehicles, a major industrial use of the metal, and increased recycling in China, Johnson Matthey said in a report. Rahul Kalantri, VP Commodities, Mehta Equities Ltd. Gold prices declined sharply on Wednesday, touching a five-week low, while silver also traded lower. The drop is attributed to profit-taking and liquidation by weaker hands. Meanwhile, a shift toward riskier assets in the broader market continues to pressure safe-haven demand. Today, gap down opening is expected amid Iran's Supreme leader said to sign nuclear deal with US if all economic sanctions are lifted. However, weakness in the dollar index and uncertainty over long-term trade deal between U.S. and other nations could support metal prices at lower levels. Gold has support at $3130-3100 while resistance at $3200-3220. Silver has support at $31.75-31.55 while resistance is at $32.30-32.65. In INR gold has support at Rs91,350-90,780 while resistance at Rs92,450-92,690. Sliver has support at Rs94,380-93,550 while resistance at Rs95,950-96,750.

FIA president ponders ‘improvements' to swearing rules

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem said on Monday he was considering "improvements" to rules that impose heavy sanctions for misconduct, including swearing, in Formula One and other series. Competitors in rallying and Formula One have been at loggerheads with the Emirati, who will be up for re-election at the end of the year, over a crackdown on bad language during events. World championship rally drivers, who had openly condemned the fines, made a breakthrough last week when they reached a compromise to divide events into a controlled zone and an uncontrolled one. "After constructive feedback from drivers across our seven FIA world championships, I am considering making improvements to appendix B," Ben Sulayem said on his Instagram account. "As a former rally driver, I understand the demands they face better than most." Ben Sulayem said appendix B, which was amended in January with tougher penalties, was a key part of the International Sporting Code but "humans make the rules and humans can improve the rules". Further details were expected later in the week, with Formula One racing in Miami. Appendix B covers stewards' penalty guidelines, setting out punishments for misconduct including words, deeds or writings that might have caused moral injury to the FIA or motorsport in general. A first offence in Formula One incurs a €40,000 (R845,146) fine, rising to €80,000 (R1,690,253) for the second and €120,000 (R2,535,380) with a one-month suspension and deduction of championship points for a third breach. Stewards "retain the discretion to take into account any mitigating and/or aggravating circumstances as well as the nature and location of the event, to tailor the penalty to the specific situation". That has been seen in Formula One when Williams driver Carlos Sainz escaped sanction for an expression used in a press conference this month. Estonian rally driver Ott Tanak, world champion in 2019, said at the weekend there had been very positive progress with the FIA. Formula One world champion Max Verstappen, who had to do work of public interest last year for swearing, bit his lip in response to what he thought was an unfair punishment during this month's Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
