'Just RM1,800 for new hires' - Woman laments how fresh grads in Sabah are being underpaid
In its 2024 salary survey, the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) reported that degree holders in Malaysia earn an average basic salary of RM2,703, with a gross monthly income averaging RM2,971. However, a recent post by a user on Threads, @vfnvsvn, highlights a more troubling reality for fresh graduates in Sabah, where starting salaries can be as low as RM1,800. 'I was honestly in disbelief,' she wrote, after discovering that some companies in Kota Kinabalu were offering just RM1,800 to new hires. She shared that a friend with a degree and a year of work experience had attempted to negotiate a RM2,000 salary, but the request was rejected. 'In the end, she accepted a Protege position simply because it was the only offer that met the RM2,000 mark here in Sabah,' she explained. ALSO READ: 'Boycott companies paying below market wages' - M'sian frustrated by parties deeming RM3k starting salary as excessive Another friend, she added, even took up a Protege role twice just for the slightly better pay. 'It's honestly so sad,' @vfnvsvn wrote. 'Fresh grads in Sabah — even in KK — are being paid so little. It's just not worth the workload.' Malaysian netizens soon took to the comments section to share their own disheartening experiences of being offered shockingly low salaries in Sabah. 'I even did an audit at the biggest laundry company in Sandakan and was only paid RM600 to RM900. In the end, I got a job in KL that offered me RM6.5k as an entry-level salary. So tell me — how can Sabahans not want to leave Sabah?' questioned @theglacester. 'Meanwhile, I'm in Tawau. The basic salary I was offered is RM1,100 — and I'm a degree holder with six years of experience. The job title is rental assistant, but I also handle ad-hoc tasks as HR and my boss's PA. Back when I worked in the Peninsula as an operations executive, I was earning RM5,000. Honestly, I regret coming back here,' shared @edakalbu. 'Sad but true — that's why I'm job hunting in Penang,' added @brayondangelo.

The 166.80 km project, falling under National Highway-6, is expected to enhance connectivity between Shillong and Silchar. The new corridor, developed on hybrid annuity mode, will span 144.80 km in Meghalaya and 22 km in Assam, with a total capital cost pegged at Rs 22,864 crore. Once completed, it is expected to cut down travel time between the two key cities and improve access to several major routes, including NH-27, NH-106, NH-206, and NH-37. Key features The project is expected to enhance travel efficiency and service quality for traffic moving between Guwahati and Silchar with its 4 lane structure. Better connectivity to nearby sister cities of Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura and the Barak valley area of Assam. Help in boosting the national logistics efficiency. Ramp up economic growth, including developing industrial sector in Meghalaya Promote tourism and tourist attraction in the North-East Increasing sugarcane FRP The Cabinet also approved a hike in the fair and remunerative price (FRP) of sugarcane to Rs 355 per quintal from At present Rs 340 per quintal. Every sugar season the FRP of sugarcanes is fixed by the Center on the basis of recommendations of commission for agricultural costs and prices (CACP.) This calculation is done on the basis of overall production of all sugarcane producing states. The factors to consider while fixing the FRP include costs of production, availability of sugar to consumers and market price. Key features For the 2025–26 season starting this October, farmers will receive Rs 355 per quintal for sugarcane — an increase of Rs 15 or 4.41% from the previous rate. FRP is the minimum price mandated by the government that sugar mills are legally supposed to pay to the farmers in exchange for their produce. The government has also announced that sugar mills with a recovery rate below 9.5 per cent will not face any deductions. Farmers supplying these mills will receive Rs 329.05 per quintal for sugarcane in the upcoming 2025–26 season, the IB minister said. In the previous sugar season 2023-24, out of cane dues payable of Rs 1,11,782 crores about Rs.1,11,703 crores cane dues have been paid to farmers, as on 28.04.2025; thus, 99.92% cane dues have been cleared. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In the current sugar season 2024-25, out of cane dues payable of Rs.97,270 crore about Rs.85,094 crores cane dues have been paid to farmers, as on 28.04.2025; thus, 87% cane dues have been cleared, a press release by the CECA revealed. Caste census The IB minister also approved the inclusion of caste enumeration in the upcoming national census. Vaishnaw said the move fell under the Centre's jurisdiction, as per Article 246 of the Constitution. He also slammed past Congress governments for not implementing a full caste census, noting that in 2010, despite widespread political support, the then UPA government only conducted a caste survey under the SECC (socio-economic and caste census). The minister said that this move will strengthen the social and economic structure of the society while the nation continues to progress. "Under the leadership of PM Modi, the cabinet committee of political affairs has decided today that Caste enumeration should be included in the forthcoming census. This demonstrates that the government is committed to the values and interests of the society and the country," he said.
