Hawaiian Barron Mamiya fires during Margaret River Pro heat at The Box after a last-minute Robbo lesson

When Barron Mamiya wanted intel on surfing at The Box, he knew exactly where to look. With 6-8ft conditions pumping at the iconic slab wave about 700m north of Main Break, Hawaiian Mamiya paddled out before dawn on Wednesday to watch local guru Jack Robinson free surfing the break he knew so well. 'I hadn't surfed there in two or three years,' Mamiya said, adding he's maybe only been out two or three times total. 'I knew Jack was out because he was sending some videos in the group chat early, early. And I was like, 'I'm going to go out there and watch him'. 'I sat in the channel and I just watched him for like an hour. I was kind of just watching where he was taking off and what he was doing, and the waves that he wanted, and once I did that I got a good idea. 'Obviously he's one of the best barrel riders out there.' The last-minute study session paid off immediately when round-of-16 heats resumed at the World Surf League Margaret River Pro later that morning. Mamiya had the top-six scoring waves in his match-up against American Jake Marshall, including back-to-back 8.00 and 7.17 barrel rides, on his way to a two-wave 15.17 to 5.73 heat win. He will next face Japanese/Australian goofy-footer Connor O'Leary, who upset Kanoa Igarashi. O'Leary, who arrived in Margaret River in danger of falling below the mid-season cut-line, has now secured his future this season with what is already his best finish of the season. 'Getting through (the cut) yesterday was a huge weight off my shoulders,' he said after an 8.50 to 2.50 win. 'Coming into today I just set myself with no expectations. It is a different challenge, a less nerve-wracking and less stressful one and more like a really exciting opportunity to get a good barrel.' Earlier, American Griffin Calapinto rode one of the waves of the day, emerging from the foam of a deep barrel and raising his arm in amazement before scoring a 9.00 on his way to beating Australian wild-card Mikey McDonagh. 'I feel like that is one of the best heats of my life,' he said. 'Getting barrelled in the jersey is the dream. 'That 9.00, I was kind of baffled myself. I got the the bottom and thought I could stand tall and cruise and next thing the wave was so fast the foam ball just lifted me up and you can kind of see my fin come out and I was almost going 180 degrees backwards and I thought I blew it . . . but then it shot me back out.' Local hope Jacob Willcox and Leonardo Fioravanti of Italy also advanced to the quarterfinals at The Box before the contest was moved back to Main Break. Jordy Smith of South Africa, who has moved up to No.2 in the ranking, and Imaikalani deVault of Hawaii, who needs to win the event to survive the cut, also advanced in the remaining round-of-16 heats before conditions saw organisers call off competition, likely until the second-last day of the window on Monday. Margaret River's Jack Robinson makes an early exit from his home World Surf League event

Jack Robinson's hopes of winning a third Margaret River Pro in four years came unstuck on a day of carnage for the championship tour's top seeds at Main Break. Robinson, the 2022 and 2024 champion at his home event, was wiped-out on Tuesday in the final heat of the day by world No.32 Imaikalani deVault of Hawaii. His early exit was one of several upsets in pumping 8-10ft conditions, as five of the top-seven were eliminated in the round-of-32. Current world No.1 Italo Ferreira of Brazil was also taken out by local qualifier Jacob Willcox, while No.2 Yago Dora of Brazil, No.5 Ethan Ewing of Australia and No.6 Filipe Toldo of Brazil were all surprise losers. It leaves No.3 Jody Smith of South Africa and No.4 Kanoa Igarashi of Japan as the highest-seeded men remaining in the seventh and final World Surf League stop before the mid-season cut. Robinson made a few uncharacteristic errors in his match-up with deVault, getting caught too deep in the barrel on a couple of occasions and getting caught on the lip and wiping out when taking an important wave inside the final six minutes. He scored a 6.00 wave with just over two minutes remaining under second priority to reduce the number he needed to advance but ultimately ran out of time, falling with a two-wave 11.33 total to deVault's 14.33. Needing to win the event to make the cut and stay on tour, deVault said he'd approached the heat against local favourite Robinson with nothing to lose. 'He's the guy to beat here, I feel like everybody knows that,' deVault said. 'My game plan was I had to get the best waves to beat him and he obviously knows the line-up so well so I was kind of just following him and he actually let me know on my good wave because it did kind of look like it was going to taper off but luckily it kept giving me the sections.' Earlier, Australian wild-card Mikey McDonagh took out Dora to reach the round-of-16 at CT level for the first time. But fellow Aussies Ewing, George Pittar, Winter Vincent, Liam O'Brien, Joel Vaughan were eliminated. Pittar and O'Brien and another Australian Ryan Callinan, who went out in the elimination round, are among those to have already missed the cut. The next call is at 7.15am on Wednesday with round-of-16 action. Watch the WSL Margaret River Pro live and free on 7PLUS MEN'S ROUND-OF-32 RESULTS HEAT 1: Mikey McDonough AUS 12.77 (6.60, 6.17) def. Margaret River's Jacob Willcox survives elimination round test to set up contest with world No.1

Local qualifier Jacob Willcox has fought through tricky conditions and a bout of illness to advance out of the Margaret River Pro elimination round and into a match-up against world No.1 Italo Ferreira. Willcox, who grew up surfing Main Break, had to draw on all of his experience to navigate lumpy 8-10ft conditions on Tuesday, posting a two-wave score of 11.03 to edge out Barron Mamiya of Hawaii (9.24) and fellow Australian Ryan Callinan (8.20) in the first heat of the day. The 27-year-old was a World Surf League championship tour rookie in 2024 but failed to re-qualify for this season after missing the mid-season cut. He took out the local trials last week to win a place in this year's Pro. 'That was just like a washing machine out there,' Willcox said after his heat win. 'I feel like I've watched a lot of heats out here, especially when it was a QS (qualifying series event) back in the day, and it was always big and rouge just like this. I was stoked just to get a few waves because I've been sick as a dog the past few days and that was my first surf since my last heat. It was good just to get back in the water.' The round-of-32 match-up with former world champion Ferreira comes after the Brazilian powerhouse dominated a three-cornered opening round heat on Saturday that also included Australian CT rookie George Pittar. Willcox, who was only able to put up two scores of 2.50 for a 5.00 total in that heat to Ferreira's 14.10 and Pittar's 10.33, said he had made adjustments that would hopefully help him take it up to the men's ranking leader. 'I had such a shocker that first day, I rode the wrong board and couldn't even get off the bottom so it felt good just to get out there on the right board and do a turn,' he said. 'It's going to be fun, I feel like the heat the other day (with Ferreira) I couldn't really even compete but this is fun conditions. He is one of my favourite surfers so it's going to be good to have a battle against him. 'I think it's about trying to find the best waves, whoever gets the best waves today will probably get through, it's just hard to find them.' Callinan's exit sees him anchored in 33rd place in the rankings and resigned to missing this year's cut. The goofy-footer had to withdraw from the event in Portugal due to injury and skipped the recent Gold Coast Pro for the birth of his first child, meaning he missed out on two point-scoring opportunities. In other results, Aussie wild-cards Winter Vincent and Mikey McDonagh advanced out of the elimination round along with Mamiya, Imaikalani deVault and Ian Gentil of Hawaii and Crosby Colapinto and Edgard Groggia of Brazil. Dievid Silva of Brazil, who was eliminated alongside Callinan will also miss the cut, while Seth Moniz of Hawaii and Alejo Muniz of Brazil are currently inside the cut-line but face a nervous wait.
