Baghdad International Dialogue: President Barzani champions $17B Road to Iraq's future
Shafaq News/ On Saturday, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani reiterated the Region's support for Iraq's pivotal Development Road Project, describing it as a decisive step toward a more prosperous and stable future for the nation. Speaking at the 7th Baghdad International Dialogue Conference, held on February 22-23, 2025 under the theme 'Communication for Development and Regional Stability,' Barzani stressed that the political and economic stability of Iraq is a shared national interest, achievable only through deep integration between Baghdad and Erbil, and by forging robust partnerships with regional and international allies. 'We in the Kurdistan Region firmly believe that the stability of Iraq—politically and economically—is a collective national priority. Real development can only be realized by uniting all regions of our country.' He further expressed high hopes that the Development Road Project will serve as a model of cooperation from Zakho to Al-Faw and as a bridge linking Iraq with its regional and international partners. 'the country is uniquely positioned to become a dynamic economic hub—a vital corridor connecting the Gulf to Europe and the East to the West.' However, he cautioned that success in this project hinges on establishing robust legal and economic frameworks that incentivize both local and foreign investments. These frameworks, according to him, must foster an attractive business environment, promote responsible political dialogue based on genuine partnership and consensus, and be underpinned by strong constitutional institutions and a fully consolidated federal system. 'Iraq's diverse society is both our strength and our treasure. This project offers a unique opportunity to transcend divisions, uniting the country into a formidable force that elevates our economic, political, and strategic standing—a vital step toward a brighter future for all Iraqis,' he remarked. He stressed that the Kurdistan Region's support for the project is not merely an economic imperative but a strategic one, aimed at reinforcing Iraq's role as a secure, stable, and influential player in the Middle East, with the potential to emerge as a significant global economic power. Reflecting on Iraq's past, Barzani noted that sustainable development is attainable only in a stable environment and that Iraq's stability is intrinsically linked to that of the wider region. He called for an approach to geopolitical changes grounded in 'balance, moderation, and cooperation,' and emphasized the importance of effective diplomacy in strengthening Iraq's international relations. Expressing gratitude for Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani's efforts in fostering dialogue, Barzani commended his initiatives that have demonstrated Iraq's potential to be a bridge for peace rather than a battleground for conflict. While acknowledging the challenges ahead, he reiterated that Iraq's vast human and natural resources offer significant opportunities for progress.

Al-Sudani reaffirms Government's Commitment to Dialogue in Tackling Local, Regional, and International Challenges
Baghdad-INA Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani, attended today the 7th Baghdad International Dialogue Conference in the capital, Baghdad. Organized by the Iraqi Institute for Dialogue under the theme 'Communication for Development and Regional Stability,' the conference hosts a large number of researchers and stakeholders from Iraq and around the world. A statement issued by the Prime Minister's Media Office, received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), stated that: "In his opening speech, Prime Minister Al-Sudani emphasized the importance of dialogue as a constitutional tool within a framework of freedom of opinion and expression.' He highlighted its role in uncovering opportunities and perspectives that may not always be apparent to decision-makers. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to adopting dialogue in addressing challenges at the local, regional, and international levels. The Prime Minister stressed that the door remains open for direct national dialogue to resolve various issues and challenges. He noted that Iraq's foreign policy adheres to a strong balance, refraining from alignment with any particular axis while engaging with all efforts aimed at preventing the spread of conflicts. At the same time, Iraq maintains its principled positions on key global issues, foremost among them the Palestinian cause. Key points from the Prime Minister's speech at the conference: Our government assumed its constitutional responsibilities fully aware of the vast internal and external political challenges ahead. Fulfilling our obligations and meeting the aspirations of our people while upholding Iraq's principled positions regionally and internationally has not been easy. We have adhered to a policy of balance despite facing political positions and unrealistic rhetoric lacking foresight and responsibility. We uphold a precise balance to free Iraq from the repercussions of decisions that disregard our national interests and the will of our people. What happened in Gaza is a pivotal moment in a long history of attempts to obscure the Palestinians' right to life, land, and existence, following a bloody history of displacement and identity erasure. In our discussions with key international actors and our engagements at the United Nations and other global forums, it has become evident that the international system has failed and is incapable of fulfilling its duties. Iraq is determined to advance along the path of development and reconstruction—a path that cannot be delayed or postponed. We have moved forward with major strategic projects, most notably the Development Road, which serves as an economic pillar for strengthening regional stability. The Development Road presents an opportunity for integration and partnership with neighboring and regional countries, reinforcing Iraq's historical, economic, and cultural significance. We successfully initiated and encouraged key regional dialogues, most notably between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran. Through responsible dialogue, we completed the mission of the Global Coalition Against Daesh, transitioning to bilateral relations and security coordination with member states. We have managed these issues with public and parliamentary support and the responsible stance of national political forces. Trade, cultural, and economic exchange with neighboring, brotherly, and friendly countries remains one of the fundamental pillars of civilization-building and maximizing the value of natural resources. The Development Road is reaffirmed as a regional project and a catalyst for fostering exchange between nations across multiple areas.
