PM Shehbaz, President Erdogan reaffirm strategic ties, push for deeper economic cooperation
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday during his official two-day visit to Türkiye, and reaffirmed the long-standing fraternal ties between the two nations and expressing commitment to strengthen strategic, economic, and defense cooperation. Accompanied by Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and senior cabinet members, PM Shehbaz was warmly received by the Turkish leadership. The meeting underscored the historic bond rooted in shared values, mutual respect, and a common vision for regional peace and prosperity. During the talks, the Prime Minister thanked Türkiye for its steadfast support amid recent regional developments, terming Ankara's principled stance and public solidarity a 'source of strength and comfort' for Pakistan. Economic cooperation emerged as a key focus of the meeting, with Prime Minister Shehbaz proposing enhanced collaboration through joint ventures and bilateral investments across priority sectors including renewable energy, information technology, defense production, infrastructure, and agriculture. Both leaders conducted a wide-ranging review of bilateral relations and followed up on the outcomes of the 7th High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council (HLSCC) held in Islamabad earlier this year. They reaffirmed their resolve to elevate the Pakistan-Türkiye strategic partnership and reiterated their target of boosting annual bilateral trade to $5 billion. ANKARA: Pakistan and Turkiye on Tuesday expressing satisfaction on the positive trajectory of multifaceted bilateral relations, reiterated their commitment to further strengthen bilateral strategic partnership, fostering peace, stability, development, and prosperity in the region. The bilateral ties and cooperation were discussed during the bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan here during the former's two-day visit to Turkiye. The meeting underscored the enduring fraternal ties between Pakistan and Turkiye and reaffirmed their commitment to further deepening bilateral cooperation across various sectors. Prime Minister Shehbaz emphasized the importance of enhancing economic collaboration, especially through joint ventures and bilateral investments. He highlighted the potential for cooperation in energy and mining, joint ventures in defence and agri production, enhancing regional and bilateral connectivity to boost trade and enhance people-to-people exchanges, besides deepening cooperation in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and cyber security. During the discussions, both leaders took note of the follow-up actions taken regarding the decisions of the 7th High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council (HLSCC) held in Islamabad on February 13, 2025. Earlier, PM Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Ankara on a two-day official visit to Turkiye at the invitation of President Erdogan. Turkiye's Defence Minister Yashar Guler received the Prime Minister at the airport. The PM is accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar and Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi. The premier's visit underscores the deep-rooted strategic partnership between Pakistan and Türkiye, marked by a tradition of regular high-level engagements, the Foreign Office (FO) said earlier in a statement. During the talks, the two leaders will review bilateral relations and exchange views on recent regional and global developments, the statement added. 'As long-standing allies and strategic partners, Pakistan and Türkiye maintain a tradition of regular high-level exchanges, reflecting the exceptional bonds of brotherhood between the two nations,' the FO stated. President Erdogan last visited Pakistan in February this year. PM Shehbaz and President Erdogan signed 24 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), protocols, and cooperation agreements across various sectors to further strengthen bilateral ties.
