Screenshot Every 5 Mins, Autocorrect: Smuggled North Korean Phone Reveals Extreme Censorship
Last Updated: A smuggled phone from North Korea reveals extreme censorship, including language manipulation and surveillance. Citizens in North Korea are cut off from outside information. A phone, smuggled out of North Korea, has revealed shocking details of how the country's 'supreme leader", Kim Jong Un, is holding its people back from any outside information. The phone was reportedly smuggled out of North Korea last year and confirms that the people there do not have access to the internet and that Kim Jong Un has enforced extreme censorship across all types of media to keep his citizens from knowing what the outside world is really like. According to a report with the BBC, the phone is also blocking people from typing in popular words, and automatically changing those to how the words are referred to in North Korea. A video shows how the word 'Oppa', which generally means 'elder brother', but is also used for referring to boyfriends in South Korea, is autocorrected to 'Comrade' on the smuggled North Korean phone. At the same time, the phone also displays a warning or a disclaimer, reading that the term can only be used to refer to siblings. Similarly, if someone tries to type 'South Korea' on the smuggled North Korean phone, it autocorrects to 'Puppet State', a term used by North Korea for the south, claiming it is controlled by the United States. Further, the phones even take screenshots of the screen every five minutes. While the phone user can access the screenshot folder, the actual screenshots are visible only to authorities, who can keep a watch on how North Koreans are using their phones. The report also claims that some TV shows in North Korea were being smuggled over the border to show North Koreans how people in other regions were enjoying freedom. In the recent, Kim Jong Un, on May 28, led a meeting on strengthening the military and inspected an artillery drill. In an expanded meeting of the 8th Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party of Korea, Kim emphasised that the roles of party organisations carrying out measures from the central leadership should be strengthened to solve 'all the problems arising in the army building and military activities." Kim also said it is 'very important to frequently organise firing contests close to the actual warfare environment" to build a powerful military force. This was the latest in a series of moves by Kim focused on strengthening the military in the past weeks.
