Jochen Mass, Who Won in F1 and at Le Mans, Dies at 78

Jochen Mass died Sunday due to complications from a stroke he suffered in February. Over nine seasons in F1 he had 105 starts, seven podiums, two fastest laps, and one win, at the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. His sports car career included time with Porsche in the glory days of the 956 and 962, before timing his move perfectly to Sauber and Mercedes in the C-9 through C-11. Jochen Mass, the affable German driver whose post-racing popularity almost matched his success on track in Formula 1 and sports cars, has died. He was 78. Mass died Sunday due to complications from a stroke he had suffered in February, his family announced. "Today we mourn the loss of a husband, father, grandfather and a racing legend," the family said on social media. "Beyond mourning his death, we celebrate his incredible life, a life he loved sharing with all of you, a life that he lived to the absolute fullest." Mass' career began in hillclimbs with cars borrowed from the Alfa Romeo dealership where he worked, according to Autosport. From there he drove Ford Capris in the European Touring Car Championship, where he won the Spa 24 Hours in 1972. He progressed to Formula 3, then Formula 2, and was soon in an F1, where he drove for McLaren, ATS, Arrows and the RAM March team. Over nine seasons in F1 he had 105 starts, seven podiums, two fastest laps, and one win, at the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. He was perhaps better known for his long career in sports cars, wherein he drove the best cars for the best teams, starting with Porsche in the glory days of the 956 and 962, before timing his move perfectly to Sauber and Mercedes in the C-9 through C-11. He won nine sports car races for Porsche from 1982 to 1987, then moved to Sauber Mercedes where he won a further 10 world series rounds in the Sauber C9 and the team's Mercedes-badged C11 in 1988-90, winning at Le Mans in 1989. After retirement he entered the broadcast booth, then became a regular in the burgeoning vintage race scene, where he was a genial presence, signing autographs and chatting away with his many fans. Sometimes members of the press even rode with him, where his sense of humor always prevailed. "He had a well-known sense of humor," said our Hearst Autos colleague Jonny Lieberman. "Once, after following him driving a 1954 300 SL with Stirling Moss in the passenger seat—the two drivers who'd won the 24 Hours of Le Mans for Mercedes—I expressed to Jochen the intense amount of Imposter Syndrome I was feeling. He looked me over for five seconds and said, 'I'm feeling something different.' Everyone who met him has a similar story, and he met a lot of people. "He is racing with all his friends again," his family said. "With love and gratitude, the Mass family."

The sports prototype was introduced in 1984 as the replacement for the 956. It may not have reached the heights of its predecessor, which won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but the 962 took the checkered flag at endurance racing's main event two times and won 19 constructors's championships across various series. Privateer team Kremer Racing built and campaigned this particular 962, chassis no. CK6-88, in 1988. It competed on multiple fronts that season, including the FIA World Sports Prototype Championship, the FIA Coupe d'Europe Interserie, and the FIA World Challenge. It's not one of the most successful 962s, but Kris Nissen drove it to victory at Hungaroring, Hockenheim, and Wunstorf. UK car output down 7.6% in February

UK car and commercial vehicle production declined by 11.6% in February, to 82,178 units, according to the latest figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The SMMT said multiple factors were at play in the month's decline over last year, notably soft markets at home and overseas, model changeovers and plant restructuring. February marked the 12th consecutive month of decline for car manufacturing down 7.6% to 73,814 units. Export volumes were up 1.3% to 60,034 units. Car production for the UK market, meanwhile, fell 33.3% to 13,780 units. UK production of battery electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid cars fell 5.6% to 27,398 units in the month, but still boosted their share marginally to 37.1%, from 36.3% last February. In the year-to-date these electrified cars have taken a 39.6% share of production, up from 36.0% a year ago, with a more modest -2.1% fall in volumes compared with overall output down -11.0%. Commercial vehicle (CV) output fell 35.9% to 8,364 units, driven primarily by less van production and following last year's February performance, which was the best since 2008 when output almost doubled. CV columes were driven by domestic demand, accounting for 55.2% of output with volumes up by more than half to 4,621 units. CV exports, however, fell 62.7% to 3,743 units (with 93.8% heading to the EU, reflecting a drop of 5,956 units shipped to the bloc). The SMMT said overall performance reflects the challenges the sector faces globally. It said measures are needed 'urgently' to bolster the UK's competitiveness and drive consumer demand. The SMMT noted that yesterday's Spring Statement by the UK Chancellor, offered no support for the industry or consumers, and said it 'represented a missed opportunity and will delay further the sector's ability to deliver growth for the UK economy'. It said the forthcoming Industrial and Trade strategies must, therefore, be 'fast-tracked to signal the UK is open for business, and the £2 billion promised by government via the Automotive Transformation Fund rolled out immediately'. The trade body also called for a cancelling of the VED Expensive Car Supplement for EVs, as well as cutting VAT on public charging and new BEV sales, extending the Plug-in Truck Grant and introducing mandatory targets for infrastructure rollout. This, it said, would back the industry's billions of pounds of investment in new factories, models and discounts, and embolden consumers and operators to make the switch. Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: 'These are worrying times for UK vehicle makers with car production falling for 12 months in a row, rising trade tensions and weak demand. The market transition is not keeping pace with ambition and, while the industry can deliver growth – and green growth at that – it needs policies to deliver that reality. "It was disappointing, therefore, to hear a Spring Statement that did nothing to alleviate the pressure on manufacturers and, moreover, confirms the introduction next month of additional fiscal measures which will actually dissuade consumers from investing. Without substantive regulatory easements our manufacturing viability remains at risk and the UK's transition to zero emission mobility under threat.' CPA intervenes for refund of tour package amount

Muscat: The Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) in Muscat Governorate facilitated an amicable settlement between a consumer and a travel and tourism agency due to the agency's failure to provide the agreed-upon service. The consumer was refunded an amount of RO4,956. The CPA's Complaints Department received a complaint from a consumer against a travel and tourism agency that agreed to arrange an 8-day trip to several European countries aboard a cruise ship, which included accommodation, guided tours, internet packages, ticket booking, and visa processing. The consumer had paid the full amount for the service. |However, the complaint arose when the consumer repeatedly attempted to contact the agency without receiving a response, forcing her to visit the agency's office in person. Upon meeting with an employee, she was informed that the agency was facing financial difficulties and would be unable to provide the service. Following standard procedures, the concerned parties were summoned for discussion regarding the complaint. Consequently, an amicable settlement was reached, resulting in a refund of RO4,956 to the consumer for the amount she had paid for the service.
