Swimmers flock to Burdette Park pool's opening day despite cooler temperatures
VANDERBURGH COUNTY, Ind. (WEHT) — Saturday afternoon was relatively chilly in the Tri-State. Though temperatures then never went higher than the mid 70s, some decide to go swimming on the first day Burdette Park's pool opened.
Some may have gone outside on Saturday and said 'it's too cold to go swimming,' but not this crowd.
Several braved the cooler temps and physically jumped — or dived — into Burdette Park's pool for the first time this season.
Those I spoke to say they wouldn't want it any other way, even if some were visibly shivering.
To account for that weather, some gave themselves no other choice but to cover up with towels and sweatshirts to keep warm.
But a little lackluster weather did not leave a bad impression on these park guests.
Those I spoke to say they'll be back again this summer, including those who have been to Burdette time and time again like Arya and A'Melody Wilson from Henderson.
'We like swimming and we like floating and we like tanning,' says Arya Wilson.
'I like the spring boards and sliding,' A'Melody added.
Lucky for then, there's some new things at the pool for the 2025 season.
There's a new walk-over bridge over the slides, two 'funbrellas' and new speakers and lights to round out the experience.
For the first time, Hot 96 will be hosting pool parties between 2 and 4 — weather permitting — on Fridays with giveaways.
On top of securing some new amenities, Burdette Park Director Zachary Wathen says he's especially proud of his staff for getting the pool open as an ice storm hit early this year and of course after the record Tri-State flooding this spring.
'We don't really have any excuses out here. We got the pool open on time, but it definitely wasn't easy. But my crew out here made it happen, so I'm proud of them,' Wathen says.
From now until August 3, the pool will be open seven days a week.
