Man out on bail for robbery charged again for theft

GEORGE TOWN: An air-conditioner serviceman, currently out on bail for a previous theft case, was charged in the Sessions Court here today with a second theft offence. A. Thines, 25, pleaded not guilty to the charge before Judge Juraidah Abbas. He is alleged to have stolen a dark blue Longchamp bag containing RM1,000 in cash, an iPhone 7, a passport and credit cards belonging to Indonesian Novita Badjo, and intentionally causing fear of immediate injury, along Jalan Kuala Kangsar about 4.30pm on April 17. He was charged under Section 392 of the Penal Code for robbery, which carries a jail term of up to 14 years, and may also include a fine or whipping upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Puteri Nor Nadia Mohamed Iqbal told the court that Section 392 was a non-bailable offence, but if the court should grant bail, it should come with conditions. "The accused has an ongoing theft trial in Balik Pulau and is out on bail. Even while out on bail, he was still caught committing a similar offence. This shows a pattern. "This is a public interest case, with video footage of the incident going viral," she added. Puteri said if the court decides to grant bail, then it should come with the conditions of not disturbing the accused and the prosecution witnesses. She said the accused also has to report to the nearest police station once a month. Meanwhile, Thines asked for a minimal bail, saying that he earns about RM1,600 and has to look after his heavily pregnant wife. Juraidah set bail at RM10,000 with one surety and fixed May 25 for submission of documents and for the accused to appoint a lawyer. She also ruled that the accused should not disturb the victim and prosecution witnesses. She also ordered the accused to report himself to the nearest police station once every month.
