ABC NEWS Channel and ABC Entertains move to High Definition

19 May 2025 The ABC will soon start broadcasting the ABC NEWS Channel and ABC Entertains in High Definition (HD), providing a better viewing experience for audiences. From 11 June these channels will no longer be available in Standard Definition. The ABC will continue to broadcast the main ABC TV channel in both SD and HD. The ABC Kids/Family channel will also remain on SD. All TVs sold since 2014, and many sold since 2008, should be HD (MPEG-4) compatible and set up to receive the full range of HD programming and TV multi-channels that are available in your area. If your TV can tune to all the local free-to-air services available in your region then it supports HD. For TVs made prior to 2008, viewing the ABC NEWS Channel and ABC Entertains in HD will require an upgrade. The most cost-effective way is to install a digital set top box, which can be obtained from most electronics stores, is easy to install and doesn't take up much space. For TVs that support HD, the changes should automatically appear in the channel list. If not, then the first thing to do is to retune your TV. Most TVs have an option to automatically retune channels within the TV menu. In many cases, the channel changes will appear after completing this process. If you are unsure how to retune channels you should refer to your TV manual or contact the manufacturer. General retuning instructions, not related to any specific set, model or brand, can be found in ABC Help Centre. Additionally, you can stream ABC services through the ABC iview app or over the internet at What are the channel changes? ABC is upgrading its broadcast technology. These changes involve updating two channels: 23 ABC Entertains will be converted to HD (in MPEG-4) 23 ABC Entertains will be converted to HD (in MPEG-4) 24 ABC NEWS Channel will be converted to HD (in MPEG-4) Why are these channels being moved to HD? The ABC is moving these channels to HD to improve the video quality of our services for audiences. Since 2014 all TVs sold in Australia have been HD compatible. When will the changes be rolled out in my area? The ABC will implement a staged rollout of the HD upgrade as follows: Wednesday 11 June – Tasmania and South Australia Wednesday 11 June – Tasmania and South Australia Tuesday 17 June – Western Australia and Northern Territory Tuesday 17 June – Western Australia and Northern Territory Thursday 19 June – Queensland Thursday 19 June – Queensland Tuesday 24 - NSW and ACT Tuesday 24 - NSW and ACT Thursday 26 - Victoria More questions? Decorated Australian soldier loses war crimes defamation appeal

Former SAS commando Ben Roberts-Smith is allegations he took part in the murder of unarmed Afghan prisoners (Representative Image: AI-generated) One of Australia 's most decorated soldiers on Friday lost a legal bid to overturn bombshell court findings that implicated him in war crimes while serving in Afghanistan. Former SAS commando Ben Roberts-Smith has been fighting to repair his tattered reputation since 2018, when newspapers unearthed allegations he took part in the murder of unarmed Afghan prisoners. Ben Roberts-Smith loses appeal to overturn defamation decision | ABC NEWS His multi-million dollar bid to sue three Australian newspapers for defamation failed in 2023, with a judge ruling the bulk of the journalists' claims were "substantially true". The 46-year-old suffered another setback on Friday, when Australia's federal court dismissed his appeal. Justice Nye Perram withheld the reasons for the decision, saying there were national security implications the government must consider before they are released. A published summary said there was sufficient evidence to support findings that Roberts-Smith had "murdered four Afghan men". Roberts-Smith argued in his appeal that the judge "erred" in the way he assessed some of the evidence. Perth-born Roberts-Smith had been Australia's most famous and distinguished living soldier. He won the Victoria Cross -- Australia's highest military honour -- for "conspicuous gallantry" in Afghanistan while on the hunt for a senior Taliban commander. The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Canberra Times shredded this reputation with a series of reports in 2018. The papers reported Roberts-Smith had kicked an unarmed Afghan civilian off a cliff and ordered subordinates to shoot him. He was also said to have taken part in the machine-gunning of a man with a prosthetic leg, which was later brought back to an army bar and used as a drinking vessel. The 2023 court ruling ultimately implicated Roberts-Smith in the murder of four unarmed Afghan prisoners. Civil court matters such as defamation have a lower standard of proof than criminal trials. Roberts-Smith has not faced criminal charges. Australia deployed 39,000 troops to Afghanistan over two decades as part of US and Nato-led operations against the Taliban and other militant groups. A 2020 military investigation found special forces personnel "unlawfully killed" 39 Afghan civilians and prisoners, revealing allegations of summary executions, body count competitions and torture by Australian forces.

Hawaii's Most Famous Volcano Just Put on a Show Not Seen for Decades

Kilauea, one of Hawaii's most active volcanoes, stole the spotlight this weekend with an eruption pattern not seen in 40 years. The spectacle was captured in a stunning time-lapse video, and shows how the eruption unfolded with multiple fiery bursts of lava, each separated by short pauses. According to scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), this stop-and-start sequence is known as 'rapid rebound' activity, a phenomenon last seen at Kilauea back in 1986. The timelapse from the USGS shows the eruption, which began on May 1, 2025 and lasted until early on May 2. The video was shared by ABC NEWS via youtube. Scientists from the USGS believe a so-called 'summit tremor' may be the cause. These tremors are continuous ground vibrations near the summit of a volcano, typically triggered by underground magma movement. In Kilauea's case, it could be the result of magma shifting, reservoir decompression, or even potential structural changes within the summit caldera. According to Spectrum News, hours before the main event, the crater pulsed with low dome fountaining and short lava overflows from the north vent. Each burst was followed by molten rock draining right back underground. Then, just before 9:30 p.m., sustained lava fountaining kicked off, shooting fiery jets nearly 330 feet into the sky. This latest eruption brought more than lava and fireworks; it came with environmental repercussions for both visitors and locals. High winds carried sharp, hair-like strands of volcanic glass, known as 'Pele's hair,' through the area. Along with clouds of tephra, which are gritty fragments of rock and debris hurled from the crater. On top of that, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) reported a spike in gas emissions, including a superheated mix of water vapor, carbon dioxide, and sulfur dioxide. As that sulfur hits the atmosphere, it reacts to form vog (volcanic smog), which can travel for miles and degrade air quality across the region. Overall, geologists continue to warn nearby communities, suspecting this fiery episode won't be the last. Factors like the rapid shift in summit tilt flipping from deflation to inflation, and persistent tremors at the volcano's summit, all suggest another eruption could be on the horizon.
