Trichy corpn to seek German funding for Cauvery riverfront project

Trichy: Trichy corporation has planned to obtain German funding (KfW) to implement the riverfront development work on the northern and southern banks of Cauvery river passing through Srirangam and Odathurai, in two phases. Corporation had earlier considered special funds for the 2.2km project, which is estimated to cost 37 crore. The civic body on Wednesday conducted a public hearing to record the needs of residents before implementing the work. Officials explained the scope of the maiden project for the city comprising proposals such as children park, walking tracks, streetlights, watch tower, recreational zone, and dedicated space for pilgrims to perform rituals. Corporation has finalized around 1.5km stretch on the southern bank between Trichy-Chennai NH bridge and railway track on Odathurai and another 750m stretch between Amma Mandapam ghats and Geethapuram ghats in the northern bank of the river in Srirangam. "We are happy with the components of the project, but we need adequate space to park cars and two-wheelers. Similarly, separate bathing space should be provided at Amma Mandapam ghats for people performing funeral rites and rituals," A Baskaran, a resident of Geethapuram said. Other demands by residents include access paths for villagers who have to cross the bank near Geethapuram. "We invited several residents from Sanjeevi Nagar and Pushpak Nagar areas too. Some approvals have been obtained for implementing the riverfront proposal. German funding is preferred.
