Gawai Festival: A time to celebrate unity and harmony in Sarawak, says churches association

KUCHING: The Gawai celebration is an opportunity to foster and strengthen mutual understanding, respect and acceptance among Sarawakians, says the Association of Churches in Sarawak (ACS). Its chairman, Datuk Danald Jute, said Sarawak's peace and harmony should not be taken for granted but continue to be preserved through hard work. "Hence, we encourage everyone to embrace and join in our unique tradition of 'ngabang' or open house so we can bolster and fortify our bonds of friendship," he said in his Gawai message on Saturday (May 31). Gawai is a harvest festival celebrated by Sarawak's Dayak community on June 1-2. Extending Gawai greetings to the Dayak community, Danald said Gawai was a thanksgiving celebration for the blessings and rich harvest of the past year. "Gawai also celebrates our rich and diverse cultures, which add colours to our nation as well as strength to our communities," he said. Danald also called for a meaningful celebration of Gawai and cautioned against overspending or overindulgence.

ACS extends Gawai Dayak greetings, urges unity and moderation

Danald Jute KUCHING (May 31): The Association of Churches in Sarawak (ACS) has extended its warmest and prayerful greetings to the Dayak community in conjunction with the Gawai Dayak celebration. ACS chairman, the Rt Rev Datuk Danald Jute, said Gawai is, by nature, a thanksgiving celebration and a time to reflect on the blessings of the past year. 'We have countless blessings and manifold good favours to celebrate and to thank God for, including the rich harvests of the past year as well as God's goodness that we can look forward to in the years ahead,' he said. He added that Gawai is also a celebration of the nation's rich and diverse cultures, which contribute strength to communities and vibrancy to the country. While acknowledging the peace and harmony enjoyed in Sarawak, Danald reminded the public not to take such unity for granted. 'Gawai is an opportunity to further foster and strengthen mutual understanding, respect and acceptance. 'Hence, we encourage everyone to embrace and join in our unique tradition of ngabang or open house, so we can bolster and fortify our bonds of friendship,' he said. As the community celebrates, Danald also urged moderation and mindfulness, warning against overspending and overindulgence. 'There is no need to overspend nor is there any profit in overindulgence, especially in alcohol. 'Instead, consider, for example, our children's education as well as the needs of those less fortunate than ourselves,' he said. Above all, Danald called for the celebration to be one of rededication to God. 'Let this Gawai be a time of rededication to our gracious and loving Heavenly Father, whose nature is always to have mercy and whose desire is for us to be reconciled to Him and to one another,' he added.

Liberian ship wreckage: Kerala government to discuss financial package with shipping company

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A day after declaring the wreckage of MSC ELSA 3 off the Kerala coast a state disaster, the state government has taken steps to negotiate a financial package with the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the owner of the sunken vessel. A seven-member committee has been formed, headed by the Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) of the Finance Department, to negotiate with MSC. Other members include the ACS of the Local Self Government Department (LSGD), Principal Secretaries from the Revenue and Disaster Management, Industries, and Agriculture Departments, as well as the Secretary of the Environment Department. The Member Secretary of the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) will act as the convenor and main point of contact with the shipping company. The committee will also oversee a two-tier mechanism at the state and district levels to address and suggest measures for mitigating the impact of potential coastal pollution. The state-level committee, chaired by the Secretary of the Science and Technology Department, consists of eight members. It will guide pollution control activities at the district level through policy directives, advisories, resource mobilisation, and support the Environment Department in conducting assessment studies for restoration and remediation.

America's Blood Centers and ACS Stop the Bleed Announce New National Collaboration

Collaboration aims to increase emergency preparedness and blood donation awareness nationwide Washington, DC, May 30, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- America's Blood Centers (ABC), the national organization of community-based, independent blood centers that supply 60 percent of the nation's blood supply, and the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Stop the Bleed program, a public-private initiative, today announced a new national collaboration during National Trauma Awareness Month and National STOP THE BLEED® Month. The collaboration brings together two critical aspects of trauma care – equipping individuals with life-saving skills to control severe bleeding in emergencies, while also underscoring the importance of blood donation, ensuring blood products are available when they are needed. "This collaboration between America's Blood Centers and ACS Stop the Bleed creates a vital link between immediate trauma response and long-term emergency preparedness. By educating individuals on both bleeding control techniques and the importance of blood donation, we're connecting the dots in trauma care. We're preparing people to act in the moment of crisis while also ensuring that life-saving blood is available when it's needed most. This holistic approach will significantly enhance community resilience and help save lives,' said Kate Fry, CEO of America's Blood Centers. 'Empowering the public to learn how to control bleeding as a bystander and the importance of donating blood is critically important. We are pleased to join with America's Blood Centers to bring this message to millions. Our ACS Stop the Bleed program has made great progress in training people to step in before professional help arrives. By working with America's Blood Centers, we highlight the importance of blood—encouraging more people to donate blood and teaching more people the skills they need to go from bystander to lifesaver,' said Patricia L. Turner, MD, MBA, FACS, Executive Director & CEO of the ACS. 'The ACS Stop the Bleed program has set the standard for initiating immediate bleeding control at the scene. This collaborative effort with ABC will help us further our educational mission of equipping the public with lifesaving knowledge we teach through our ACS Stop the Bleed courses,' said Kenji Inaba, MD, FACS, chair of the ACS Stop the Bleed Committee. 'ABC is also part of a growing initiative with us to equip first responders with blood products so that they can initiate transfusions in the field when warranted to increase an injured person's chance for survival. That's why it's also critical for more members of the public to donate blood so that it's available to save lives. Together, these two programs have the potential to make a real difference to the critically injured bleeding patient.' The collaboration will launch a series of ongoing nationwide activities beginning during National Trauma Awareness Month and National STOP THE BLEED® Month. ABC members will provide training in ACS Stop the Bleed across their footprints, distribute special co-branded ABC-ACS Stop the Bleed kits, and organize events. In addition, ACS Stop the Bleed now features new information on blood donation and a link to ABC member center locations on its website, Blood is crucial in trauma care, often determining the line between life and death for severely injured patients. According to the U.S. Blood Donation Statistics and Public Messaging Guide, 80% of operating room deaths within 24 hours of trauma are due to severe blood loss, and hemorrhage is the primary cause of death in the first hour at trauma centers. Swift administration of blood products is vital, especially during the critical "Golden Hour" after injury. The demand is high, since a single car accident victim may need up to 50 units of red blood cells, while gunshot victims require ten times more blood on average than other trauma patients. This reality underscores the need for regular donations to maintain a strong blood supply. Data demonstrates the potential impact of this collaboration. Bloodworks Northwest, an ABC member, reported that students who completed ACS Stop the Bleed training were 32% more likely to donate blood and 24% more likely to encourage others to donate. The collaboration also aims to address critical challenges in the nation's blood supply. With nearly 22% of blood donors nationwide over age 65, engaging younger demographics is crucial. Nearly 70% of Bloodworks Northwest's Stop the Bleed course participants were between 16-24 years old, providing a unique opportunity to connect with potential young donors. Founded in 1962, America's Blood Centers is the national organization bringing together community-based, independent blood centers. Its member organizations operate more than 600 blood collection sites providing close to 60 percent of the U.S., and a quarter of the Canadian, blood supply. These blood centers serve more than 150 million people and provide blood products and services to more than 3,500 hospitals and healthcare facilities across North America. All ABC U.S. members are licensed and regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In Latest Gaffe, Nitish Kumar Mixes Up PM Modi With Ex-PM Vajpayee At Bihar Rally

Last Updated: While addressing a public gathering in Rohtas district, Nitish Kumar was elaborating about several developmental works in state. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, already under public scrutiny over several slip-ups and gaffe, caught public's attention on Friday when he mixed up Prime Minister Narendra Modi's name, in his presence, with former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee in an event in Patna. While addressing a public gathering in Rohtas district, Kumar was elaborating about several developmental works in state. While speaking, he mixed up PM Modi's name with Vajpayee. Realising the error, he quickly attempted to recover, and asked the crowd to stand and 'pranam" PM Modi, who was on stage. PM Modi on Friday launched development projects worth more than Rs 48,520 crore in Bihar's Karakat. The PM, who arrived in Patna on a two-day visit to the state on Thursday, inaugurated the four-laning of the Patna–Gaya–Dobhi section of NH–22, worth around Rs 5,520 crore and four-laning of the elevated highway and grade improvements at Gopalganj Town on NH–27 at a function here. Modi dedicated to the nation the third rail line between Son Nagar – Mohammad Ganj, worth over Rs 1,330 crore, among others. The PM also laid the foundation stone for the Nabinagar Super Thermal Power Project, Stage-II (3×800 MW) worth over Rs 29,930 crore in Aurangabad district, which will aim at ensuring energy security for Bihar and eastern India. Nitish Kumar's Previous Gaffe The latest incident was an addition to a growing list of incidents that have raised concerns over Kumar's public conduct. Earlier this week, Kumar stunned the attendees at an appointment letter distribution ceremony in Patna by placing a welcome plant on the head of Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) S Siddhartha. Kumar's unique style at the Lalit Narayan Mishra Institute had left officials and attendees both surprised and amused, triggering laughter across the venue. The moment caught everyone off guard, including ACS Siddhartha, who appeared visibly surprised. Nitish Kumar's spontaneous and unconventional gestures have frequently drawn public attention, with his offbeat behaviour over the years earning him a reputation for moments that often go viral. In March, Kumar abruptly left the stage ahead of the national anthem during the inauguration of the Sepak Takraw World Cup in Patna. In November last year, he made an attempt to touch Prime Minister Narendra Modi's feet at a public event in Darbhanga. First Published: May 30, 2025, 19:16 IST
