FOX8 Community Baby Shower helps families in need
HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — At eight months old, Dashawn Vincent Jr. is thriving. His parents call him 'Junior.' 'He is getting very active,' said Amber White, Junior's mom. 'He's growing so fast, it's like he grows three feet every day,' said Dashawn Vincent, Junior's dad. The two are first-time parents, and the past year has been full of adjustments. 'I'm used to it just being me and just taking care of my husband,' White said. 'Now I'm taking care of all three of us, and it takes a toll on me. But I wouldn't trade it for anything.' The family recently moved to North Carolina from Texas in search of more opportunities. Money is tight, and they're living at The Salvation Army of High Point Center of Hope Family Shelter until they can get on their feet. 'It's very challenging,' Vincent said. 'Sometimes, we find ourselves wanting to break down.' That's where the FOX8 Community Baby Shower comes in. Generous donations from FOX8 viewers, including diapers, wipes, formula and other essentials, take a tiny bit of that burden off local families in need. 'It makes me happy because now I don't have to worry, 'Oh, he's running out of diapers' or, 'He's running out of food or wipes,'' Vincent said. 'The fact that there is a program that helps with that makes it ten times easier. Now, I can focus on going to work and coming back.' The FOX8 Community Baby Shower allows families to focus on what matters most. 'Our goal is to get on our feet 100 percent and not have to backtrack,' Vincent said. 'I just want him to always have stability and know that he can come to us because we don't have family to go to,' White said. 'We want to be his safe haven.' FOX8, Salvation Army to celebrate 1 millionth coat given for Give a Kid a Coat
(WGHP) — FOX8 and the Salvation Army will celebrate a major milestone on Wednesday. The FOX8 team has been a part of the Give a Kid a Coat campaign for close to four decades, helping kids stay warm since the late 80s. On Wednesday, we will receive the one-millionth coat donation, and it's going to come from a very special guest. Tune in after 7 a.m. on Wednesday to find out which NASCAR drive will make the milestone donation. Up until Feb. 8, you can help children in need by dropping off any new or gently used coat to A Cleaner World. A Cleaner World will clean, press and perform minor repairs on the coats before they are given to The Salvation Army for distribution.
