Amit Shah honours police team that scalped Basavaraju
NEW DELHI: Home minister Amit Shah on Saturday met and felicitated officers of the Chhattisgarh Police who played a key role in the recent anti-Naxal operations in Bijapur and Narayanpur that led to the elimination of top CPI(Maoist) leader Nambala Keshav Rao alias Basavaraju and 57 others. On X later, Shah said, "Met the officers who played a crucial role in the recent anti-Naxal operations and congratulated them on the historic success of these operations. I am eager to meet the brave jawans who made these operations successful with their courage, and will soon visit Chhattisgarh to meet them. The Modi govt is committed to freeing India from the menace of Naxalism." The officers honoured by Shah, in the presence of Chhattisgarh CM Vishnu Deo Sai and Deputy CM Vijay Kumar Sharma, included Chhattisgarh DGP Arun Dev Gautam, ADGP (anti-Naxal operations) Vivekanand, IGP (Bastar Range) Sundarraj P, SP Narayanpur Prabhat Kumar, SP Bijapur Jitendra Yadav and SP Bastar Shalabh Singh. As part of stepped up offensive in the Maoists' last bastions, the Chhattisgarh Police and the CRPF, with other state police forces, BSF and Indian Air Force, had undertaken a 21-day operation in April-May in the Karreguttalu Hills on the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border. The operation led to the neutralisation of 31 Naxalites, including some senior members of the dreaded People's Liberation Guerrilla Army Battalion No. 1, and the recovery of a huge cache of arms and supplies. In another operation in Narayanpur on May 21, personnel from Chhattisgarh Police's District Reserve Guard eliminated Basavaraju and 26 other Naxalites.

Siddaramaiah's political secretary dismissed, ADGP intel shunted out
A day after the suspension of top police officials in connection with the June 4 stampede at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium, the Karnataka government on Friday dismissed MLC K Govindaraj from the post of Political Secretary to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The decision, though not officially linked to the incident, appears to be part of a broader damage control exercise by the government. An official notification issued by the Chief Minister's Office said, 'The appointment of K Govindaraj as Political Secretary to the Chief Minister is hereby revoked with immediate effect.' Govindaraj, a key political aide to Siddaramaiah and a prominent figure in Karnataka's sports circles, was closely associated with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebrations that ended in tragedy, with 11 people dead and over 50 injured in a stampede outside the stadium. Although the government has not publicly cited reasons for the move, officials suggest that the decision followed growing criticism of Govindaraj's involvement in the event and the surfacing of a letter he wrote on June 4. In the letter, addressed to government departments, Govindaraj had requested 'arrangements for a big celebration for the RCB team in Bengaluru on Tuesday.' The letter has reportedly caused embarrassment to the Chief Minister's Office. Earlier in the day, Govindaraj distanced himself from the controversy, denying reports that he had advised the Chief Minister against a full-fledged victory parade from the airport to Vidhana Soudha. 'Who am I to advise the Chief Minister?' he said, adding, 'I would be the last person to advise anything on cricket, since I head the Karnataka Olympic Association.' A sports administrator and the current president of the Karnataka Olympic Association, Govindaraj's sacking follows closely on the heels of the abrupt resignation of LK Atheeq, the Additional Chief Secretary to the CM, earlier this week. Both exits have further fuelled speculation that the government is struggling to contain the fallout from the deadly crowd surge. On the same day, the government also transferred Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Intelligence, Hemant M Nimbalkar. He, however, continues to hold charge as ADGP and Commissioner, Department of Information and Public Relations. Opposition parties criticised the government's recent actions, calling them reactive and politically motivated. Karnataka BJP president BY Vijayendra accused the Congress-led government of acting only under public and political pressure. 'The state government has acted only after coming under pressure… Action has been taken against RCB and the Karnataka Cricket Association. The Chief Minister suddenly suspended senior police officers, including the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner, and five other officials,' Vijayendra said.

Official sources claimed Govindaraju's reported push to hold RCB celebrations at Vidhana Soudha may have contributed to his removal. During a press conference Thursday, CM Siddaramaiah had acknowledged lapses in intelligence over the stampede: "No decision has been made yet about what action to be taken in this regard. We will discuss it." The twin measures follow Thursday's suspension of Bengaluru City police commissioner B Dayananda and four other senior police officers. The opposition has accused the govt of shielding political functionaries and punishing only police officers. We have made no scapegoats." Social activist Abraham TJ filed a formal complaint early Friday, demanding action against Nimbalkar, citing negligence and intelligence failure. He questioned the selective suspension of officers while the intelligence chief remained untouched. In his complaint, Abraham wrote that when the govt itself had acknowledged intelligence failure and it made no sense to act only against five police officers. He asked: "Why no action was taken against ADGP Intelligence? Is it because he is the spouse of the Congress leader?" The CM's office confirmed receipt of Abraham's complaint. Mysuru: Calling the Bengaluru stampede an intelligence failure, JD(S) working president S R Mahesh on Friday asked the govt to initiate action against the intelligence ADGP Hemanth Nimbalkar, home secretary, and chief secretary.
