Duke drops 10 in the 7th to surge past Clemson, ties the series

Duke drops 10 in the 7th to surge past Clemson, ties the series Clemson let a five-run lead slip away in stunning fashion Saturday, as Duke scored 10 unearned runs in the seventh inning to rally past the ninth-ranked Tigers 15-10 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The win evens the pivotal ACC series at a game apiece. The Tigers (38-14, 15-11 ACC) have now lost four of their last five games and nine of the past 12. Clemson's pitching and defense fell apart in the seventh. Leading 6-5, the Tigers appeared poised to turn a routine double play, but a fielding error by Jarren Purify opened the floodgates. Duke capitalized with a barrage of two-out hits and free passes — scoring 10 runs without any being earned. In total, Clemson issued 11 walks, hit three batters, and allowed 14 base runners via free pass. Duke (34-16, 15-11 ACC) pounded out 13 hits, including four solo home runs. AJ Gracia stayed hot with two homers and two RBI, giving him three long balls in the series. Ben Rounds added a 2-for-4 performance with a homer and three RBI, while Jake Hyde delivered a key two-run single in the seventh. Clemson initially responded well after giving up a first-inning homer to Gracia. Josh Paino's three-run blast and an RBI single from Andrew Ciufo helped Clemson build a 6-1 lead by the end of the first. Luke Gaffney had three hits and two RBI, while Cam Cannarella added two hits and an RBI. But the Tigers couldn't hold the lead. A series of miscues and lack of clutch pitching in the seventh inning unraveled what had been a promising afternoon. Duke went 9-for-15 with two outs, tallying 11 two-out RBI. Clemson, meanwhile, was just 2-for-10 in those spots and struck out 15 times at the plate. Clemson tacked on four runs after the collapse, but it wasn't enough to climb back. The series finale is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. on ACCNX. Contact us @Clemson_Wire on X, and like our page on Facebook for ongoing coverage of Clemson Tigers news and notes, plus opinions.

Duke uses 10-run 7th inning to come back to defeat #6 Clemson, 15-10

CLEMSON, S.C. (Clemson SID) – Duke scored 10 runs in the seventh inning to defeat No. 6 Clemson 15-10 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Devils, who evened the series 1-1, improved to 34-16 overall and 15-11 in the ACC. The Tigers fell to 38-14 overall and 15-11 in ACC play. AJ Gracia hit a towering solo homer in the top of the first inning, then Josh Paino answered with a long three-run homer, his 10th of the year, in the bottom of the first inning. The Tigers added three more runs in the frame, capped by Andrew Ciufo's two-out, run-scoring single. Macon Winslow belted a solo homer in the second inning, then Gracia led off the third inning with a long home run, his second of the game. The Blue Devils added a run in the frame on Ben Rounds' two-out single to narrow Clemson's lead to 6-4. Rounds cut Clemson's lead in half when he led off the fifth inning with a homer. Duke took advantage of an error on a potential inning-ending double play grounder to score 10 unearned runs on four hits in the top of the seventh inning, including the go-ahead runs on Jake Hyde's two-out single, as nine of the 10 runs came with two outs. Cam Cannarella extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning, then Jack Crighton followed with a bases-loaded walk. The Tigers added two more runs in the frame on an error. Reid Easterly (8-1) earned the win, while Jacob McGovern (3-1) suffered the loss. The series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m. on ACC Network Extra. Duke baseball comes in fifth in the ACC preseason poll

Duke baseball comes in fifth in the ACC preseason poll The Duke baseball team, the defending ACC Tournament champions, finished fifth in the conference's preseason media poll released on Thursday. The Blue Devils earned 182 points, not garnering a single first-place vote amid the 16 ballots cast. The total left them behind the Virginia Cavaliers, Florida State Seminoles, North Carolina Tar Heels, and Clemson Tigers in order. Duke won 40 games in 2024, winning its four conference tournament games by 28 combined runs. The Blue Devils saw their season come to a close at the Norman Regional, dropping games against the Connecticut Huskies and Oklahoma Sooners, before three of the team's four First Team All-ACC nominees left the program. Third baseman Ben Miller (.360 batting average, 15 home runs, 18 doubles, 49 RBIs) and sophomore outfielder AJ Gracia (.305, 14 HRs, 14 2Bs, 58 RBIs) both return to Jack Coombs Field as members of the D1Baseball Preseason All-America team. Duke gets its 2025 season underway on February 14 against the Cincinnati Bearcats, the first part of a three-game home series. The first conference series starts on March 7 against the California Golden Bears.
