Inmates attack, hurl stones at Hindutva activist murder accused in Mangaluru jail
Tensions inside Mangaluru Sub-Jail in Karnataka flared on Monday evening after fellow inmates attempted to assault one of the accused in the murder of Hindu activist Suhas also known as Chotte Naushad, was amongst the 11 people arrested for allegedly playing a key role in Shetty's killing. According to police, he had helped the main accused carry out the attack unfolded when Naushad, after being produced before the court on May 19 following the end of his police custody, was being taken to meet another inmate inside the jail premises, just before his transfer to Mysuru Jail. A few prisoners allegedly hurled stones and other objects at him in an attempt to assault staff intervened swiftly and brought the situation under control. Naushad escaped without any Shetty, a former Bajrang Dal member and the prime accused in the 2022 Fazil murder case, was killed by a group of assailants on May 1 near Kinnipadavu. Eleven people have been arrested in the case so to police, five to six men armed with swords and sharp weapons intercepted Shetty's car and launched a ferocious assault on him. Though rushed to AJ Hospital, Shetty succumbed to his 42, was a well-known figure in coastal Karnataka's political undercurrent, with a long-standing association with Hindutva organisations like the Bajrang had five criminal cases against him and was considered a rowdy-sheeter. Robotic partial knee replacement performed

The home minister said that eight people have been arrested in connection with the murder. The assailants allegedly attacked Shetty using sharp weapons and fled the scene. He was grievously injured and rushed to AJ Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, reported PTI. Police records show Shetty was involved in at least five criminal cases, including murder and robbery, registered across Mangaluru and Belthangady taluks. He had recently been released from jail after serving time for his previous offences. In the wake of Shetty's murder, Mangaluru Police enforced Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita across the city from Friday until May 6. 'The order aims to prevent potential flare-ups and maintain public order after the incident,' said Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal, who also serves as the additional district magistrate. The directive prohibits public gatherings, meetings, processions, slogan-shouting, and the carrying of any items that can be used as weapons. The police decision follows signs of unrest in the city, with Vishwa Hindu Parishad expressing anger over Shetty's killing. Authorities fear that his murder could lead to communal unrest, especially given the sensitive backdrop of past violence linked to the Fazil lynching case.

8 arrested in killing of Hindu activist Suhas Shetty
MANGALURU: Karnataka police have arrested eight individuals in connection with the killing of Hindu activist Suhas Shetty, state home minister G Parameshwara confirmed on Saturday. All eight suspects are currently in police custody. In light of the incident and rising communal tensions in the coastal belt, Parameshwara also announced that the state government will soon establish an Anti-Communal Task Force to curb hate-driven violence and improve community safety. The attack took place on Thursday night around 8.30 pm when Shetty was traveling with five associates—Sanjay, Prajwal, Anvith, Latheesh, and Shashank—near Kinnipadavu Cross. Their vehicle was intercepted by a group of six armed men traveling in a Swift car and a pickup truck. The assailants targeted Shetty, assaulting him with lethal weapons and leaving him critically injured. Despite being rushed to AJ Hospital, Shetty succumbed to his injuries. Police have registered a case of murder and are pursuing leads to determine the full motive and scope of the attack. Shetty, who had five criminal cases against him—four in Mangaluru City and one in Dakshina Kannada—was a known rowdy sheeter. His murder has raised concerns due to his alleged involvement in sensitive cases, including his role as one of the accused in the 2022 killing of Mohammed Fazil, a 23-year-old from Mangalapete in Katipalla. Fazil's death had previously heightened communal tensions in the coastal region.
