‘A Juneteenth Pageant – The Play' promises an evening of history, music, laughter and secrets
HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – There are events happening across Hampton Roads to celebrate Juneteenth. One of them is this weekend at the Hampton History Museum, which is presenting A Juneteenth Pageant, The Play!
The performance will be an education on the holiday, featuring actors native to the 757.
The play takes place in the modern day at a beauty pageant where contestants will be asked questions about the history of Juneteenth and give answers that educate and entertain the crowd.
'And so the all four of the contestants just happen to be darker skinned young ladies. So they're in a battle of wills as far as what is beautiful, what is not. And what we're trying to do with all the other lessons of building confidence, of learning all about Juneteenth. We're also saying that everyone is beautiful,' said writer and director, Marie St. Clair.
There are two performances Saturday, June 14 — at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. — at the American Theatre in Hampton. The theater is located at 125 East Mellen Street. Admission is $10.
