Sophie's Birthday Wish: Choosing to Give Instead of Receive
As a parent, you spend years teaching your child to say please and thank you, to be kind, to think of others. But once in a while, your child will surprise you with a lesson of their own and something deeper, something that reminds you just how big a young heart can be. That moment came for me recently, when my daughter Sophie told me she didn't want birthday presents this year. She's turning 10, and like most kids her age, birthdays have always meant balloons, cake, and a mountain of wrapping paper. But this year, Sophie wanted something else. She looked me in the eye and said, 'I have enough. I want to help people instead.' And she meant it. Together, we discovered Share Your Wish, a social enterprise designed for families who want to turn birthdays into something more meaningful. Their mission is to help children learn the values of generosity and social responsibility by turning part of their gift fund into charitable donations making birthday celebrations not just fun, but impactful.
Sophie quickly chose her causes: ALS Network, a deeply meaningful choice to our family, and one other organization that supports all in need. Through the Share Your Wish platform, we created a birthday page where guests can RSVP to her party and contribute to both her small gift fund and the donation fund. Instead of buying toys or gift cards, friends and family are helping Sophie support people who truly need it. And Sophie? She couldn't be prouder. She's been telling everyone about it and her teachers, her friends, even the cashier at the grocery store. 'I'm helping people with ALS for my birthday!' she beams. Watching her take ownership of this cause has been a joy unlike any birthday celebration I've seen before. It's not about what she's getting it's about what she's giving. And that's exactly the philosophy behind Share Your Wish. Founded by parents who felt overwhelmed by the gift-giving excess surrounding birthday parties, the platform was created to shift the focus back to what truly matters: celebrating with purpose. It empowers kids to make an impact, reduces waste and materialism, and plants the seeds of empathy, social responsibility, and generosity.
Through this process, Sophie is learning that birthdays can be about more than candles and cake. They can be about compassion. About lifting others up. About realizing that even one child can make a difference in the world. So this year, there may be fewer presents to unwrap, but Sophie's heart is full. And I'm reminded once again that sometimes, the smallest voices carry the biggest messages. If you're a parent looking to give your child a deeper sense of purpose on their special day, I encourage you to explore what Share Your Wish offers at You might just be surprised at the joy that comes from giving and the pride your child feels when their birthday becomes something truly unforgettable. Because the greatest gift we can give our children… is the chance to give.
