Ahmedabad: Pet Rottweiler that mauled infant to death dies of Babesiosis

Over two weeks after it allegedly mauled a four-month-old girl, resulting in her death, and injured her aunt in a residential society in Ahmedabad, a Rottweiler pet dog died of Babesiosis disease on Tuesday. The dog, Rocky, had attacked the infant in Radheya Residency society in Ahmedabad's Hathijan area on May 12. Following the attack, the dog was taken away by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). AMC's Cattle Nuisance Control Department (CNCD), in an official statement, said that Rocky was undergoing necessary treatment at a veterinary hospital in Bodakdev when, around 1.45 pm on Tuesday, it died. Following a test, Rocky tested positive for blood protozoan disease Babesiosis, which is fatal. Following the attack on the infant, the dog was rescued by the CNCD team and taken to AMC-run Dog Rescue Welfare Centre in Danilimda where its daily feeding, monitoring and medical treatment was being undertaken under Superintendent Divyesh P Solanki and veterinary doctors besides teams of CNCD, dog behaviour, training, treatment and care specialists. On May 19, the dog was taken to Paws Universe, a private multispecialty veterinary hospital, for treatment after reporting tick fever. The civic body said it would bear the cost of medical treatment, investigation, dog trainers and experts besides NGOs involved in looking after Rocky. After the infant's death, an FIR was registered against the dog owner at Vivekananda Nagar Police Station, Hathijan, on May 13. AMC authorities claimed that they had informed the dog owner, Dlilipbhai Patel, about its death and asked him to be present for the post-mortem as well as cremation. However, when Patel did not arrive, the post-mortem examination was performed as per the rules. Rocky was buried in a pit around 3 pm on Tuesday at Gyaspur carcass depot, as per the rules, in the presence of the teams concerned, AMC stated.

Dog that mauled infant dies in AMC custody

Ahmedabad: The rottweiler that fatally attacked a four-month-old baby girl in a Hathijan society on May 12, has died in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's custody. According to the official report issued by AMC, the adult male dog — kept as a pet by Dilip Patel, a resident of the society — was impounded on May 13 following an FIR registered at Vivekanand Nagar police station. The impounding was carried out by the CNC department in the presence of police and veterinary staff. The dog, Rocky, was housed at the AMC-run Dog Rescue Welfare Centre in Danilimda, where care and treatment were provided under the supervision of veterinary officer Dr Divyesh Solanki, the report stated. AMC officials said visits and inputs were also taken from animal behaviour experts and NGOs, including Bowsome Senior Dogs India and other animal welfare advocates. "On May 19, the dog was shifted to a private veterinary hospital in Bodakdev after it showed signs of illness. He was diagnosed with babesiosis — a tick-borne protozoal infection, which is fatal if untreated. Despite treatment in an ICU facility, Rocky died at 1.45pm on May 27. His remains were transferred to the ABC Centre, Behrampura, and a post-mortem was conducted by a govt veterinary officer," according to the report. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Viscera samples have been sent to the Animal Disease Research Office in Makarba for laboratory examination. Animal lovers and dog rescuers claimed that while authorities have the right to observe and assess a seized animal, prolonged confinement in cramped conditions without adequate veterinary care amounts to inhumane treatment. "The system must be held accountable even when animals in state care are neglected. Public safety is paramount, but so is the humane treatment of animals," said a source close to the matter.

Owner of Rottweiler that mauled infant to death arrested, dog impounded

The Cattle Nuisance Control Department (CNCD) of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) impounded a pet Rottweiler on Tuesday after it mauled a four-month-old baby to death and injured her aunt in a residential society in Ahmedabad on Monday night. The dog's owner, Dilip Ganpat Patel, was booked for causing death by negligence and arrested by the Ahmedabad Rural Police on Wednesday morning. The dog is currently being held at the civic body's dog shelter. In January, the AMC had launched a registration drive for pet dogs under its rabies control programme. Of the 5,520 pet dogs registered by 4,848 owners, not a single Rottweiler was listed. Dashrath Jasu Chauhan (42), a key maker who resides at Radhey Residency in Hathijan and sells his wares near Maninagar railway station, filed a complaint against Dilip Ganpat Patel. Chauhan is the grandfather of the deceased infant. According to the FIR filed at Vivekanand Nagar police station, on the night of May 12 around 9:30 p.m., Chauhan was informed by society members that Dilip Patel's Rottweiler, Rocky, had attacked his 17-year-old daughter Heena and four-month-old granddaughter Rushika, the child of his elder daughter Punja. When he reached LG Hospital, he found his granddaughter with bite marks on her head and Heena with injuries on her waist and stomach. By 10:45 p.m., doctors declared Rushika dead. Initially, the family declined a post-mortem and conducted the child's last rites, burying her along the Vatrak River in Mahemdabad, Kheda district. However, after persuasion from police and relatives, Rushika's parents consented to the post-mortem. Her body was exhumed and the procedure conducted at the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Mahemdabad. Dilip Ganpat Patel was booked under BNS Section 106(1) (causing death by negligence) and Section 291 (negligent conduct with respect to animals) at the Vivekanand Nagar police station on Tuesday night and arrested the following morning, confirmed Deputy Superintendent of Police Neelam Goswami. According to authorities, the incident occurred when Heena took Rushika to the society's common garden area. A woman was walking the Rottweiler, which suddenly became aggressive and attacked both the infant and her aunt. The baby succumbed to her injuries, and Heena was admitted to the AMC-run LG Hospital. On May 13, the site was inspected by the CNCD superintendent, a police inspector, and a veterinarian. At that time, neither the dog nor its owner was present at the residence. Later, the Vivekanand Nagar police brought Dilip Patel to the police station for interrogation and further action was initiated. The dog was seized by staff from Memnagar police station with assistance from CNCD's dog-catching unit and was taken to AMC's dog shelter. Under the 'Rabies-Free Ahmedabad City 2030' campaign, pet registration began on January 1, 2025. Despite multiple public notices, the Rottweiler's owner failed to register the animal, AMC officials stated. Among registered breeds are German Shepherd, Labrador, Golden Retriever, Shih Tzu, Pomeranian, Pug, Doberman, and Husky. The highest number of registrations has been reported in the West Zone, with 1,484 dogs registered by 1,299 owners, followed by the North-West Zone, where 1,283 dogs are registered by 1,123 owners.

Ahmedabad civic body suspends 9 doctors over alleged irregularities in clinical trials income

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has suspended nine doctors, including an associate professor of the civic body-run medical college, following allegations of irregularities in the income generated from clinical trials at a municipal hospital, officials said. Instead of forming an 'Ethics Committee' as mandated under the law, these doctors had set up their own committee and conducted clinical trials, a senior official of the hospital said. The AMC initiated an inquiry after Congress corporator Rajshree Kesari on Sunday alleged that at least three patients lost their lives at the AMC-run V S Hospital in four years due to illegal clinical trials. Kesari, a Congress corporator from Chandkheda ward in Ahmedabad, claimed that though 500 patients underwent clinical trials at the hospital in four years, the head of the clinical trial department, Dr Devang Rana and others siphoned off the entry fee amount paid by four pharma companies and did not give anything to the hospital. Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel on Monday said, "Following a preliminary probe, the AMC has suspended Rana and eight other doctors who were part of the clinical trial team at the hospital." Dr Rana, an MD, used to serve as an associate professor in the Department of Pharmacology of NHL Municipal Medical College , and was appointed as the head of clinical trials in V S Hospital in 2021. While Rana was a permanent employee, eight other doctors were hired by the AMC on contractual basis, he said. "Usually, income generated from clinical trials is divided into two parts. While one part goes to doctors, the other one goes to the hospital. In this case, we found that doctors had kept the entire amount with themselves. We have already suspended Rana and eight other doctors involved in it," minister Patel said. An inquiry is still on and further action will be taken as per the findings of the investigation, he said. Citing various documents in her possession, Kesari claimed that clinical research conducted by Rana and others led to the death of at least three patients. "I have various documents to prove the irregularities. Four companies had signed MoUs with the management of the V S Hospital to carry out clinical trials on patients. As per my knowledge, this illegal clinical research led to the death of at least three patients," she said. "As per the law, fees paid by these companies should have been divided between the doctors and VS Hospital. But in this case, not a single rupee was deposited into the hospital's bank account despite 500 patients undergoing trials," the corporator added. Since Kesari also put VS Hospital's current superintendent Dr Parul Shah in the dock, the latter claimed that Rana was given the responsibility of carrying out clinical trials by the then superintendent Dr Manish Patel. "Clinical trials at the V S Hospital started in 2021 when Dr Manish Patel was the hospital superintendent. Dr Patel had appointed Dr Devang Rana here as an expert pharmacologist and began the trials on patients. I was not involved in this exercise as I joined just six month ago," she told reporters on Monday. She claimed that clinical trials at the VS Hospital had been permanently stopped in December last year after the hospital management learnt about the irregularities. Instead of forming an official 'Ethics Committee' as mandated under the law, Rana and Patel had created their own committee of doctors and started conducting clinical trials, she said. "An internal inquiry has revealed that since 2021, Rana and his team of doctors conducted clinical trials on nearly 500 patients of the VS Hospital for 4 pharmaceutical research companies," she said, adding that around 50 types of such trials were conducted. Shah claimed that no one has approached her with a complaint of death due to a clinical trial at the hospital. She did not rule the angle of financial irregularities under Rana because despite conducting trials and collecting fees from companies as per agreements, money was not deposited into the hospital's official bank account.
