Canada's Homan falls 5-4 to Tirinzoni at AMJ Players' Championship curling final

Canada's Rachel Homan fell 5-4 to Switzerland's Silvana Tirinzoni in the women's curling final of the AMJ Players' Championship on Sunday. After a scoreless first two ends, Tirinzoni scored in the third and fourth ends to take a 2-0 edge. Homan's Ottawa-based rink trimmed the deficit in half in the fifth. However, the Swiss side made it a 4-1 game in the sixth. Homan, though, was not down just yet. Homan's side scored three in the seventh, forcing a deciding eighth end. Tirinzoni's rink scored the winning point in the final end to emerge victorious. In the men's final, Scotland's Bruce Mouat defeated Switzerland's Yannick Schwaller 6-5 in an extra end. Mouat scored two in the sixth end and stole one in the seventh to take a 5-3 lead, but Schwaller scored two with the hammer in the eighth to force the extra end. The Scottish skip was coming off a victory last week at the world men's curling championship in Moose Jaw, Sask.

Canada's Homan steals pair in 8th end for quarterfinal win over Yoshimura

Canada's Rachel Homan stole two points in the eighth end for a 6-4 win over Japan's Sayaka Yoshimura on Saturday at the AMJ Players' Championship in Toronto. Yoshimura needed to make an open draw to the four-foot ring with her final throw but her stone was heavy. Homan, from Ottawa, was scheduled to play South Korea's Eun-Jung Kim in the evening semifinal at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. Sweden's Anna Hasselborg defeated South Korea's Seung-Youn Ha 6-3 in the other early playoff game. Hasselborg was set to meet Switzerland's Silvana Tirinzoni in the other women's semifinal. The men's quarterfinals and semifinals were scheduled for later in the day. The finals at the season-ending Grand Slam of Curling event were scheduled for Sunday.

Mike McEwen outscored Matt Dunstone 9-8 in a battle of Canadian teams on Friday at the AMJ Players' Championship. Dunstone stole a point in the eighth end but McEwen scored a single in the extra end for the victory. Switzerland's Marco Hoesli topped American Korey Dropkin 5-3 in the other early men's game at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. In women's play, Sweden's Anna Hasselborg defeated Japan's Satsuki Fujisawa 6-3 and South Korea's Eun-Jung Kim beat Japan's Sayaka Yoshimura 7-3. Three more draws are scheduled for later in the day at the Grand Slam of Curling season finale. The playoffs start Saturday and the finals are set for Sunday.

Reigning world and Canadian champion Rachel Homan defeated Manitoba's Kerri Einarson 5-3 on Thursday evening at the AMJ Players' Championship in Toronto. Homan improved her record to 3-1 in Pool A of the Grand Slam Curling event, while Einarson was 2-2 after beating Switzerland's Xenia Schwaller 8-5 on Thursday morning. South Korea's Eun-jung Kim remained undefeated atop Pool A at 3-0 with a 9-2 victory over Schwaller in the late draw. Switzerland's Silvana Tirinzoni and Sweden's Anna Hasselborg topped Pool B at 3-0. Tirinzoni beat Japan's Satsuki Fujisawa 5-3 this afternoon and Hasselborg edged Japan's Momoha Tabata 6-5 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. In the men's competition, reigning Canadian champ Brad Jacobs defeated Italy's Joel Retornaz 5-4 in the morning draw. Jacobs, who threw at a game-low 70 per cent, scored a single in the eighth end for the win. The world bronze medallist is playing with a substitute front end this week of Connor Njegovan at lead and Tyler Tardi at second. Jacobs later lost 6-1 to Manitoba's Matt Dunstone, falling to 2-2 in the men's standings. Dunstone improved to 2-1. Brad Gushue dropped a 7-4 decision to Mike McEwen in another all-Canadian matchup. Gushue dropped to 1-3 and MacEwen is 2-1. Toronto curler John Epping remained 4-0 top lead Pool B with a 5-1 victory over Retornaz in the evening draw. Scotland's Bruce Mouat — this year's world champion — and Switzerland's Yannick Schwaller were tied at 3-1 atop Pool A.

Alberta's Skrlik, B.C.'s Brown lock in playoff seeds at Tournament of Hearts

Playoff seedings in one pool at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts clicked into place while the playoff race in the other pool was still on. Defending champion Rachel Homan capped Pool A at 8-0 followed Alberta's Kayla Skrlik and B.C.'s Corryn Brown both 6-2. Skrlik ranked higher because of an earlier win over Brown. Those three teams advance to the championship round. Homan was an 8-4 winner of Alberta's Selena Sturmay, Brown beat Prince Edward Island's Jane DiCarlo 9-2 and Skrlik downed Nunavut's Julia Weagle 7-4 in the final Pool A draw. Northern Ontario's Krista McCarville finished 4-4 with a 9-3 win over New Brunswick's Melissa Adams. Manitoba's Kerri Einarson, Ontario's Danielle Inglis, Nova Scotia's Christina Black and Quebec's Laurie St-Georges were the Pool B frontrunners heading into the final draw. The top three teams in each pool advance to compete for four Page playoff berths. Sunday's winner represents Canada at next month's world championship. Quebec's St-Georges upsets Manitoba's Einarson in Scotties Tournament of Hearts Homan, Mouat teams to clash in battle of sexes Homan and Scotland's Bruce Mouat will clash in curling's battle of the sexes in Toronto. The top-ranked women's and men's teams in the world square off in the Rio Mare Battle of the Sexes on April 7 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre a day before the final Grand Slam of the season. The AMJ Players' Championship is in the same arena April -13. The eight-end skins game will feature celebrity coaches, guest appearances and unique rule twists, The Curling Group said Thursday in a statement. A portion of ticket proceeds and $1,000 per end will go to each team's charity of choice. "Knowing that our funds from this event will go to the Sandra Schmirler Foundation makes it even more special," Homan said in a statement. Mouat's chosen charity was Charlie Boy's Cancer Fundraiser. "We know Team Homan will bring their A-game, but we're ready for a battle," Mouat said. Homan's 52-4 season as of Thursday included securing the top seed in her team's pool at the Canadian women's curling championship in Thunder Bay, Ont. Her team was attempting back-to-back titles at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. The final is Sunday.
