Rs 1.5 crore DA case: Search at AMMK leader's house

THANJAVUR: DVAC sleuths on Friday conducted searches at the house of AMMK deputy general secretary and former MLA of Thanjavur M Rengasamy, a day after booking him and his family for allegedly acquiring assets to the tune of Rs 1.5 crore disproportionate to their known sources of income. A 10-member team, led by DSP of DVAC Thanjavur unit R Anbarasan, arrived at Rengasamy's house in Thalavaipalayam village at 7 am on Friday. The search continued till around 2 pm. Sources said Rengasamy was in Chennai. According to sources, DVAC has registered an FIR against Rengasamy, his wife Indira and younger son Vinobharath under the Prevention of Corruption Act. As per the FIR 'the known sources of income, expenditures, assets of Rengasamy and his family members between May 1, 2011, and August 30, 2017, were scrutinised'. During the preliminary enquiry, it was disclosed that Rengasamy in his official capacity had criminally conspired with his family and associates and acquired huge wealth in the form of assets, shares and pecuniary resources, the FIR stated. It further said that several contracts were executed in the name of R V Constructions, Thanjavur, managed by Vinobharath, by influencing government machinery. Rengasamy, who was earlier with the AIADMK, was elected as MLA in 2011 and 2016. After he switched over to AMMK, he ceased to be MLA from November 17, 2017, under anti-defection law.

Vigilance team raids ex-MLA's house, seize documents

Trichy: A team from the directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption (DVAC) raided the residence of former MLA M Rengasamy near Thanjavur on Friday on suspicion of accumulating wealth exceeding known sources of income when he was the MLA of Thanjavur assembly constituency from 2011 to 2017. They seized related documents and registered a case against him. The officials, led by DSP R Anbarasan, visited Rengasamy's house near Thalavapalayan in Thanjavur. However, Rengasamy was allegedly away from the house. The DVAC team raided the house around 6.30am. The raid lasted around six hours and was completed around noon. Speaking to TOI, an official from DVAC said, "We have seized some documents related to corruption from the house and booked M Rengasamy under the Prevention of Corruption Act. We will summon him for further inquiries." Rengasamy, currently the deputy general secretary of Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK), was earlier a senior functionary in AIADMK. In 2017, during Rengasamy's second tenure as the MLA, the erstwhile speaker P Dhanapal disqualified him for defecting from his party, AIADMK and joining a faction led by T T V Dhinakaran. The faction later became AMMK.

Dhinakaran criticises DMK govt. for not fulfilling poll promises

Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) general secretary T.T.V. Dhinakaran on Tuesday contended that the 'singular achievement' of the DMK government, which had completed four years in office, was to rake up issues, such as delimitation and Katchatheevu, with a view to deflect the 'dissatisfaction' of the public with the government's performance. In a statement, he listed some of the promises made by the ruling DMK during the 2021 Assembly poll that, according to him, had remained unfulfilled. Among these were the exemption from the National Entrance-cum-Eligibility Test, restoration of the Old Pension Scheme for government staff, and filling of vacancies in the government to tune of 3.5 lakh. In a post on his social media handle, Mr. Dhinakaran assailed the functioning of the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation for having stopped the procurement of paddy from on-Cauvery delta districts in the State. He also criticised it for not having released ₹250 crore to the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation (NCCF) for paddy procurement, as it was farmers who had been eventually affected. He sought the intervention of the State government in this regard.
