Israeli strikes kill 42 in Gaza on first day of Eid, say Palestinian officials
Displaced Palestinians mourn and carry injured and killed Palestinians who lost their lives after Israeli airstrike and artillery shelling on Eid al-Adha morning in Khan Yunis, Gaza on June 06, 2025. PHOTO: ANADOLU AGENCY Listen to article As Palestinians in Gaza mark the first day of Eid al-Adha, Israeli attacks have killed at least 42 people across the enclave since dawn this morning. Shelling, airstrikes reported in Khan Younis, Gaza City, Jabalia amid ongoing humanitarian catastrophe Israeli forces continued with their brutality and did not spare Palestinians on the first day of Eid al-Adha, one of Islam's holiest festivals, by carrying out a series of airstrikes and artillery attacks across the Gaza Strip on Friday morning, killing 42 people and injuring several others, according to eyewitnesses and medical sources. Despite the festive occasion, many Palestinians performed Eid prayers amid the rubble of their destroyed homes, as Israel's genocidal war continues to devastate the besieged enclave. In southern Gaza, Israeli warplanes carried out multiple raids in Khan Younis, while heavy artillery targeted residential neighborhoods in the central, northern, and eastern parts of the city, witnesses said. Plumes of smoke rose across southern Khan Younis as shelling and air raids intensified. According to medical sources, a child was shot dead by Israeli forces near the Al-Saraya detention area in Khan Younis. Another civilian succumbed to injuries sustained in a previous Israeli strike on the city. Four Palestinians were killed and several others were injured when an Israeli drone struck a mobile phone charging station set up between tents sheltering displaced families west of Khan Younis. In Rafah, four more Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces near an aid distribution center, the same locations that have been the target of deadly Israeli attacks since their establishment late last month. Following an Israeli airstrike on the town of Abasan al-Kabira, east of Khan Younis, rescue crews found one body under the rubble. Eyewitnesses also reported that Israeli troops carried out demolitions of buildings in northern Khan Younis. In northern Gaza Strip, medical sources reported that nine Palestinians were killed and several others injured after Israeli forces bombed residential homes in Jabalia with the casualties transported to Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital. Heavy shelling hit the Al-Tuffah neighborhood of Gaza City, while air raids struck Jabalia town, residents said. This marks the fourth Eid al-Adha observed under the shadow of war in Gaza, which has been reeling from a deliberate and systematic campaign of extermination since Oct. 7, 2023. Israel, rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, has pursued a genocidal offensive in Gaza since October 2023, killing nearly 54,700 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Aid agencies have warned about the risk of famine among the enclave's more than 2 million inhabitants. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war crimes against civilians in the enclave.

Over 100 dead as flooding submerges village in DR Congo
People are moving in boats after flood in Eastern DR Congo. PHOTO: ANADOLU AGENCY Listen to article More than 100 people have died after flooding in a village near the shores of Lake Tanganyika in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a local official said. The flooding, which affected the village of Kasaba, comes at a vulnerable moment for the Central African nation. Rwanda-backed M23 rebels have intensified an offensive in the eastern region since the start of the year, with thousands killed in fighting in the first two months of the year. Samy Kalodji, administrator of Fizi territory in South Kivu province where the village is located, said late on Saturday that reports from the area "indicated more than 100 deaths." The affected area is still under the administration of Kinshasa and is not among the zones taken by M23. Didier Luganywa, spokesperson for the South Kivu government, said in a statement the flooding incident occurred between Thursday night and Friday when torrential rains and strong winds caused the Kasaba river to overflow its banks. The statement gave a toll of 62 confirmed deaths with 30 injured. Local officials said the Kasaba area was only accessible via Lake Tanganyika and was not covered by the mobile phone network, which could delay humanitarian relief efforts.

China ready to 'fight' US trade war
The flags of China and the US. PHOTO: ANADOLU AGENCY China vowed on Tuesday to "fight to the end" after US President Donald Trump threatened to further ramp up tariffs but the EU warned against escalating a trade war as hard-hit global markets steadied. Trump has upended the world economy with sweeping tariffs that have raised the spectre of an international recession, but has ruled out any pause in his aggressive trade policy despite a dramatic market sell-off. Beijing — Washington's major economic rival but also a key trading partner -— responded by announcing its own 34 percent duties on US goods to come into effect on Thursday, deepening a showdown between the world's two largest economies. The swift retaliation from China sparked a fresh warning from Trump that he would impose additional levies of 50 percent if Beijing refused to stop pushing back against his barrage of tariffs — a move that would drive the overall duties on Chinese goods to 104 percent. "I have great respect for China but they cannot do this," Trump said at the White House. "We are going to have one shot at this... I'll tell you what, it is an honour to do it." China swiftly hit back, blasting what it called "blackmailing" by the United States and vowing "countermeasures" if Washington imposes tariffs on top of the 34 percent extra that were due to come in force on Wednesday. "If the US insists on going its own way, China will fight it to the end," a spokesperson for Beijing's commerce ministry said on Tuesday. In a mounting war of words between Beijing and Washington, China's foreign ministry also condemned "ignorant and impolite" remarks by US Vice President JD Vance in which he complained the United States had for too long borrowed money from "Chinese peasants". The ministry said that "pressure, threats and blackmail are not the right way to deal with China". The European Union sought to cool tensions, with the bloc's chief Ursula von der Leyen warning against worsening the trade conflict in a call with Chinese Premier Li Qiang.

Israeli military intercepts missile fired from Yemen
Houthis have been targeting cargo ships owned or operated by Israeli companies or transporting goods to and from Israel. PHOTO: ANADOLU AGENCY Listen to article The Israeli military said it intercepted a missile fired from Yemen on Sunday after it activated air raid sirens across multiple areas of the country. 'Following the sirens that sounded a short while ago in several areas in Israel, a missile launched from Yemen was intercepted by the IAF (air force) prior to crossing into Israeli territory,' the military said in a statement. The Iran-backed Houthis have regularly fired missiles at Israel since the war in Gaza broke out on October 7, 2023, following an attack on Israel by Hamas. The Houthis, who have also targeted shipping vessels in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden since the Gaza war began, say they are acting in solidarity with the Palestinian people. The rebels had paused their campaign during the weeks-long truce in Gaza, which ended on March 18 when Israel resumed its bombardment of the Palestinian territory.
