Steelers star skips the start of mandatory minicamp
PITTSBURGH, Pa. (WKBN) – Pittsburgh Steelers star linebacker T.J. Watt skipped the first day of mandatory minicamp on Tuesday. The four-time All-Pro and 2021 AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year is entering the final season of the four-year extension he signed in September 2021. Complicating matters is the $40 million deal signed by Cleveland's Myles Garrett in March, which made him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL. 'Certainly we'd like him to be here, but certainly not surprised by where we are,' said Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin. 'We've expressed the desire to get the business done, he has as well, and so we'll continue to work. We've been here before.' Watt finished the 2024 season with 11 1/2 sacks. His absence from mandatory mini-camp provided opportunities for linebacker Nick Herbig and rookie Jack Sawyer. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Instant analysis of Eagles signing Zack Baun to a 3-year, $51M deal ahead of free agency
Instant analysis of Eagles signing Zack Baun to a 3-year, $51M deal ahead of free agency Instant analysis of the Philadelphia Eagles signing Zack Baun to a 3-year, $51M deal ahead of free agency The Eagles are keeping Zack Baun in Philadelphia, agreeing to a massive three-year, $51 million contract, including $34 million guaranteed at signing and an additional $1.5 million in incentives and escalators. Baun was initially signed as a potential contributor at the edge rusher position but was switched to the linebacker position by defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and flourished as a three-down linebacker with the Eagles. A finalist for AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year, Zack Baun was the highest-graded LB (90.1) by PFF in the regular season, producing 150 tackles and 5 FFs (2nd in the NFL, behind T.J. Watt – 6). In the playoffs, Baun became the second NFL LB since 1991 to generate takeaways in each of their first four career postseason starts (Devin White in 2020), which included an INT of Patrick Mahomes in Super Bowl LIX. With the move now complete, here's an instant analysis of the new contract. Baun earned his payday After playing minimal snaps in New Orleans, Baun outplayed Devin White during training camp and earned All-Pro honors. Last season, Baun posted 150 tackles and five forced fumbles (2nd in the NFL, behind T.J. Watt – 6). In the playoffs, Baun became the second linebacker since 1991 to generate takeaways in each of their first four career postseason starts (Devin White in 2020), which included an interception of Patrick Mahomes in Super Bowl LIX. Howie Roseman went away from tradition Philadelphia hasn't drafted a linebacker in the first round since the late 1960s, and the team has never paid a linebacker $17 million per season. Baun is among the highest-paid linebackers in NFL The numbers are just rolling in, and it's early, but Baun is now the third highest-paid linebacker in the NFL on AVP, trailing Roquan Smith (Ravens), Fred Warner (49ers), and Tremaine Edmunds (Bears). Eagles remain strong down the middle With Baun returning, the Eagles have Jalen Carter at defensive tackle, Baun at linebacker, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson at safety.
