Panthers rout Oilers 6-1 to take 2-1 lead in Stanley Cup final
SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Brad Marchand and Sam Bennett scored again, Sam Reinhart and Carter Verhaeghe each got their first goal in the Stanley Cup final, and the defending champion Florida Panthers capitalized on the Edmonton Oilers' worst performance in weeks to win Game 3 in a 6-1 rout Monday night. The Panthers lead the best-of-seven series 2-1. Marchand became the oldest player to score in each of the first three games of a final and the first to open the scoring the next time out after notching an overtime winner. His 11 goals in the final are the most among active players, one more than similarly ageless Corey Perry. Bennett added his NHL playoff-leading 14th goal, just the second at home, after making a big hit on Edmonton's Vasily Podkolzin that contributed to the turnover to spring him on a breakaway. Marchand and Bennett have combined to score eight of Florida's 13 goals in the series. But it was not just them this time. Verhaeghe buried a perfect shot into the net under the cross bar on the power play, Reinhart made up for missing the net on an earlier attempt, Aaron Ekblad scored to chase Stuart Skinner on the fifth goal on 23 shots and Evan Rodrigues added the exclamation point in the waning minutes. At the other end of the ice, Sergei Bobrovsky earned the 'Bobby! Bobby!' chants from a fired up Florida crowd. The two-time Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender known as 'Bob' was on his game for the very few quality chances the discombobulated Oilers mustered, making 32 saves. Perry — at 40 the oldest player in the series — beat Bobrovsky with some silky hands for a power-play goal, keeping up this final being a showcase of cagey veterans along with Marchand. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. Connor McDavid could not get his team on track, and Edmonton took 15 minors — led by Evander Kane's three plus a misconduct to add up to 85 penalty minutes — including a brawl that ensued with less than 10 minutes left. Trent Frederic and Darnell Nurse, who fought Jonah Gadjovich, got misconducts that knocked them out of a game with an outcome determined long before. After the final looked as evenly matched as can be with Games 1 and 2 each needing extra time, overtime and then double OT, Game 3 was a lopsided mismatch. The Oilers came unglued to the point Jake Walman resorted to squirting water on Panthers players on their bench from his spot on the visiting side. The teams have some extra time off before Game 4 on Thursday, when the Panthers have the chance to take a 3-1 lead. ___ AP NHL playoffs: and

Dallas Stars not getting shut out on power play in this West final against Oilers
DALLAS (AP) — The Dallas Stars aren't getting shut out on the power play in the Western Conference final against Edmonton this time. They took full advantage of their opportunities in the third period of Game 1 in this series, with three power-play goals in a game-turning 5:26 span on way to a 6-3 victory Wednesday night, a year after going 0 for 14 in six playoff games against the Oilers. 'It's great that we got some goals there and hopefully we can keep doing that,' said Miro Heiskanen, whose got the first of the trio only 32 seconds into the final period. 'Happy for our power play. It took a lot of heat last year at this point of the year," coach Pete DeBoer said. "It was the difference tonight for us, so it's great.″ Mikael Granlund tied it at 3 with his power-play goal and Matt Duchene then put the Stars ahead to stay. That trio of power-play goals made the Stars the first team in Stanley Cup playoff history to earn multiple wins in regulation of the same postseason after being down two goals in the third period. In Game 7 of the first round against Colorado, Dallas overcame a 2-0 deficit in the third period on way to a 4-2 series-clinching win. Dallas is only the second team since 1934, when power-play goals were first officially tracked, to have three of them in the opening six minutes of a playoff period. The other was the New York Rangers, with three in the first 4:36 of the third period on way to a 7-2 win over Montreal in Game 1 of the 2014 Eastern Conference final. While the Stars had that lingering goose egg from last year's West final, then failed to convert on a power play 7 1/2 minutes into this series opener against Edmonton, they have been good on special teams throughout this postseason. They entered this series ranked third among playoff teams both for converting power plays (30.8%) and killing penalties (86.1%). Their power play was the best among any teams that played more than one round, and the teams better on PKs were Eastern Conference finalists Carolina and Florida. 'The first power play we had was a little bit like the rest of our game. our execution was a little off, we didn't make great plays with the puck, we didn't have great support,' DeBoer said. 'I thought in the third, we came out and we executed. I think you never know when that switch is going to go. "Obviously, being at home here for this game, we get that first goal, the crowd gets into it, momentum shifts really quickly. That's the benefit of being at home here for Game 1.' ___ AP NHL playoffs: and

Panthers rout the Maple Leafs 6-1 in Game 7 to advance to the Eastern Conference final
TORONTO (AP) — Sergei Bobrovsky made 19 saves, Florida scored three times in a 6:24 span in the second period and the Panthers routed the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-1 in Game 7 on Sunday night to advance to the Eastern Conference final. The defending Stanley Cup champion Panthers will play the Carolina Hurricanes in the conference final, opening on the road Tuesday night. Seth Jones, Anton Lundell and Jonah Gadjovich scored in the second-period burst and Eetu Luostarinen, Sam Reinhart and Brad Marchand — into an empty net — added goals in the third. Marchand, Luostarinen and Aleksander Barkov each had two assists. Maxi Domi scored for Toronto. Joseph Woll stopped 28 shots. Jones opened the scoring at 3:15 of the second, beating Woll to the far post with a shot from the right side. Lundell struck at 7:18, putting in a rebound. Gadjovich followed at 9:39 off another rebound. Domi cut it to 3-1 at 2:07 of the third, beating Bobrovsky between the legs. Luostarinen countered 47 seconds later for Florida, and Reinhart scored at 9:24. Referee Chris Rooney left 13 seconds into the second period after Florida's Niko Mikkola was jousting for the puck and his stick went into Rooney's face. Garrett Rank took Rooney's spot. ___ AP NHL playoffs: and

Aho scores in double OT as Hurricanes eliminate Devils from playoffs in five games
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Sebastian Aho hammered a one-timer past Jacob Markstrom at 4:17 of the second overtime period to help the Carolina Hurricanes beat the New Jersey Devils 5-4 on Tuesday night to clinch their first-round NHL playoff series in five games. Aho's goal off a feed from Shayne Gostisbehere came with the Hurricanes on a four-minute power play on a double-minor high-sticking penalty by Dawson Mercer that sent Jesperi Kotkaniemi skating off to the tunnel with a towel to his face. Aho provided the capper, the only lead the Hurricanes would have in a wild game that pushed them into the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. They'll next play the winner of the Montreal-Washington series, with the Capitals leading 3-1 in that one. The Devils jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes, only to see Carolina erupt for four goals in a chaos-filled second period to level the game. But things settled down into a tough grinding finish for the third period and extra periods, capped ultimately by Aho's second goal of the night. Aho also had the goal that tied it 4-4 with 8:33 left in the second period with the Hurricanes holding a two-man advantage. Taylor Hall, Jackson Blake and Andrei Svechnikov also scored for Carolina, which is one of four teams in the playoffs for at least seven straight years. But the Hurricanes are the only one of that group to win at least one post-season series each time. It also marked the second time in three seasons that the Hurricanes had eliminated the Devils in a five-game series that ended with a sudden-death goal in Raleigh. The other came in the second round in 2023. Mercer, Timo Meier and Stefan Noesen scored during New Jersey's game-opening flurry, then Nico Hischier added a second-period goal for a 4-3 lead after Carolina's rampaging comeback. Markstrom finished with 48 saves for the Devils, operating as a one-man survival raft in the first overtime as Carolina put shot after shot on the net with a chance to advance riding on each one — including Carolina's Seth Jarvis ringing the left post with about 4 1/2 minutes left in the first OT. Carolina finished with a 34-12 edge in shots after the second period to put Markstrom under constant duress. He made 37 consecutive saves between Aho's tying and winning goals. Pyotr Kochetkov finished with 31 saves in his first start of the post-season for Carolina. ___ AP NHL playoffs: and

Simon Nemec scores in 2nd OT to lift Devils past Hurricanes 3-2 in Game 3
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Simon Nemec scored 2:36 into the second overtime and the New Jersey Devils beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 on Friday night in Game 3 of the first-round playoff series. Nico Hischier and Dawson Mercer scored in regulation for New Jersey and Jacob Markstrom had 25 saves. The Devils cut their series deficit to 2-1 after losing the first two games on the road. Seth Jarvis and Sebastian Aho scored for the Hurricanes, and Frederik Andersen finished with 34 saves. Game 4 is Sunday back at Prudential Center, and Game 5 is Tuesday night in Raleigh, North Carolina. In the second OT, Nemec brought the puck up the right side, made a deke move in the right circle and fired it past Andersen. Both teams had chances in the first overtime and the goalies came up with big saves and blocked shots. New Jersey, which had two power plays in the period, had an 8-2 advantage on shots. Mercer pushed the Devils' lead to 2-0 at 1:17 of the third period after Andersen made a pad save to deny Jesper Bratt's driving attempt. With the goalie out of position, Mercer went behind the net to get the puck and brought it in front on the left side but whiffed on his attempt to tuck it in. However, Andersen dove to get back in the play and knocked the puck across the line with his stick. Jarvis got the Hurricanes on the scoreboard with a power-play goal from the right circle at 6:11. Aho tied it with another power-play goal with 7:40 left. Markstrom came out to his left to make a save on a shot by Andrei Svechnikov, who got the puck back and passed to to Aho in the right circle and he fired it past Siegenthaler and Hischier in front of the net. Markstrom had a nice glove save on a shot by Jesperi Kotkaniemi with 25 seconds left in regulation to keep it tied. The Devils got defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler back for the first time since Feb. 4, but were without Luke Hughes and Brenden Dillon for the second straight game. New Jersey then lost another defenseman, when Johnathan Kovacevic didn't return after the first intermission. The Devils had the first five shots on goal of the game and the Hurricanes didn't get their first shot until 9:06 elapsed when Markstrom turned aside an attempt by Logan Stankoven seconds before a power play expired. Timo Meier found Hischier streaking to the net, and Hischier appeared to lose control of the puck as he tried to move it to his forehand, but the puck slid across the goal line on the left side to put the Devils up 1-0 with 3:49 left in the first. It was New Jersey's third goal of the series and second by Hischier. The Devils nearly added to their lead late in the second period during a scramble in front of Andersen, but the goalie was down on his stomach and gloved Meier's attempt from the left side with 6:04 remaining. ___ AP NHL playoffs: and DEVILS 5 HURRICANES
