Last month, Nintendo announced the Switch 2, its newest handheld gaming console. Set to hit shelves on June 5 this year, the upcoming console packs in a much more powerful chipset, has a bigger screen and an extra USB-C port. Recently, Nintendo unveiled the technical specifications for the Switch 2, but the official details are a bit vague. However, a new report by Eurogamer gives us a deeper look into what's powering Nintendo's new console. According to the Switch 2's official page, the upcoming console is said to be powered by a 'custom processor made by NVIDIA', but the publication suggests that Nintendo is going with an octa-core ARM Cortex A78C that has a max clock speed of 1.7GHz. Two of the eight cores are reserved for the system, which means developers will have access to only six cores. As for the GPU, Nintendo seems to be using an Nvidia GPU based on the Maxwell architecture, which powers the RTX 30 series cards. Like the CPU, some of the GPU resources are also reserved by the system. Nintendo has already confirmed Switch 2 also supports hardware backed ray tracing as well as DLSS, Nvidia's AI powered upscaling algorithm. On the memory front, the handheld sports 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of storage. All of this is powered by a 5,220mAh battery which the company says will last up to 6.5 hours. To give you a quick recap, Nintendo revealed last month that the Switch 2 has a 7.9-inch LCD screen with 120Hz refresh rate and HDR support and comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack and a microSD card slot that lets you expand the storage up to 2TB. Digital Foundry claims it features an eight-core ARM Cortex A78C CPU, with a clock speed of 998MHz while docked or 1101MHz in handheld mode. It's also capable of a max 1.7GHz clock speed, though it's unclear whether this would be reached in use. The fact that the CPU seemingly runs at a higher clock speed in handheld mode is also quite unusual. Traditionally, CPU performance is throttled in mobile systems when they're running off battery power, in order to reduce power consumption. Digital Foundry speculates that it may be designed to make up for the memory bandwidth, which drops from a docked 102GB/s to just 68GB/s in handheld mode. The GPU then features Nvidia's Ampere microarchitecture, which is also used in RTX 30 Series cards. The microarchitecture just turned four years old today, so is slightly older than the 2014 Nvidia Maxwell architecture used in the Tegra X1 was when the original Switch released in 2017. The GPU offers 1,546 CUDE cores, a massive increase on the 256 of the Tegra X1. Its clock speed is also boosted, at 1,007Mhz docked or 516MHz in handheld mode, with a maximum speed of 1.4GHz. Throw in the confirmed Nvidia DLSS support, and this SoC should be able to deliver a significant increase in graphical power. In terms of RAM, the console has 12GB of LDPPDR5X memory in the form of two 6GB modules. 3GB is reserved for the system, while 9GB is available for developers. Digital Foundry also states that there is no support for VRR over HDMI, which is a little weird given that it is supported by the system's built-in 7.9 inch, 120Hz and 1080p screen. A new report has now shed some light on this lingering question. Richard Leadbetter of Digital Foundry has shared new details about the Switch 2's SoC. This information dives deep into the technical makeup of the processor. In addition to the chip, this report also reveals a few details in other areas that have not previously been mentioned. Starting with the CPU, Leadbetter writes that it features a ARM Cortex A78C, which runs on an ARMv8 64-bit instruction set. There's also 64K of L1 instruction cache and 64K of L1 data cache. Meanwhile, all eight cores of the L2 have 256K and can share 4MB of L3 cache. Six of the eight cores in the ARM Cortex A78C are available to developers, and the remaining two are reserved for running the OS. Something peculiar Leadbetter found is that the CPU runs at 1100MHz in handheld mode, while shifting down to 998MHz in its performance mode. It's speculated that memory bandwidth drops in handheld mode may have something to do with why the system's CPU runs faster in that mode. Finally, it's mentioned that the maximum clock speed for the CPU is 1.7GHz. File loading and decompression can usually be handled by the CPU, but the Switch 2's CPU can hand off that responsibility to the FDE, making load times faster and more power efficient. Another aspect of the Switch 2 that hasn't been talked about is multi-touch. Like the original Switch, the Switch 2 will also feature a 10-point multi-touch capacitive touchscreen.
