Irish language crime thriller Crá goes global as TG4 bosses confirm season two

An executive producer on TG4's Irish language series Crá has described the show as "special" - as the crime thriller is sold in 68 countries. Set in Donegal, the six-part series tells the story of Garda Conall Ó Súilleabháin (Dónall Ó Héalaí – Monster, Foscadh), who is thrust into a deeply personal case when the body of his mother, Sabine, is discovered 15 years after she vanished. Barred from the official investigation, Conall joins forces with Ciara-Kate (newcomer Hannah Brady), a determined journalist using her true crime podcast to unearth the village's darkest secrets. The show, which aired on TG4 on November 11, 2024, has now sold to 68 countries and is streaming under the international title Boglands, with major platforms such as ARTE in France and AMC Networks/Acorn TV in the USA acquiring rights. "From day one, we knew CRÁ was special," said Darach Ó Tuairisg, Executive Producer at Fíbín Media. "It's a modern, layered mystery grounded in a uniquely Irish setting, showcasing the best of Irish talent. "To now see it resonate in 68 countries, including being the first Irish language series to air on BBC Network and to see it broadcast in territories like the US and Australia in original language is a testament to the strength of our creative team and to the global appetite for compelling, original, Irish-language stories." Deirdre Ní Choistín, TG4 Director General, praised the series' international impact: "The global success of CRÁ, is a proud moment for TG4 and for Irish-language public service media. "It demonstrates that Irish language creativity and storytelling can have universal appeal. CRÁ reflects TG4's commitment to delivering compelling content that resonates far beyond Ireland and the Irish language community, and we are delighted that CRÁ will reach audiences around the world." Máire Ní Chonláin, Commissioning Editor at TG4, said: "We are incredibly proud of the cast and crew of CRÁ, whose talent and dedication have brought this powerful story to life. "Their hard work and creativity have helped the series achieve remarkable success, both at home and internationally. It's a shining example of the strength and global resonance of Irish-language storytelling." Building on the success of the first series, the producers and broadcasters are now pushing to start filming season two in early 2026.

DW documentary: ‘A hospital in the shadow of war'

Sudan has been embroiled in a civil war since April 2023. In the Nuba Mountains, a surgeon and his team work to maintain medical care in one of the few hospitals left in the region. The documentary, produced in cooperation with DW, ZDF and ARTE, portrays the human dimension of one of the world's greatest humanitarian crises. See below for information on the advanced screening of the documentary. The people of the Nuba Mountains have been oppressed for decades by the Islamist government in Khartoum, Sudan's capital. To this day, the remote region in the country's south has neither paved roads, nor mobile network coverage – and almost no medical care. One hospital has defied all hardships for almost 30 years. The situation worsened further with the outbreak of civil war: More than half of the Sudanese population is threatened by famine. 'The statistics of the war are so impossible to imagine, that we looked for a place that let us experience the human dimension. It was in a hospital in the Nuba Mountains that we found stories about people seeking refuge, about people suffering from hunger; but also about an irrepressible will to survive,' say directors Carl Gierstorfer and Laura Salm-Reifferscheidt. In their film, they follow Joseph Yacoub, the only surgeon in the area, through his everyday life running the hospital. He cares for pregnant women, for the wounded and for mothers with malnourished children. 'Sudan is ranked 156th out of 180 countries on the Press Freedom Index. There is barely any independent coverage in the country and access is strictly limited. That makes this film all the more important, as it takes a clear look at the humanitarian crisis in Sudan,' says Dr. Nadja, Scholz, Managing Director Programming at DW. 'Yes, the people and their stories are restricted to a tiny setting; a hospital, but the fates of the people there reflect the tragedy of an entire country, torn apart by a brutal civil war,' says DW editor Dieter Roser. The documentary will appear on the DW Documentaries YouTube channel on June 19, 2025. It will be available in English, Spanish; Arabic, Hindi and Indonesian. It will also be broadcast worldwide on DW's television channels.
