KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 (Bernama) -- The ASEAN Community Vision (ACV) 2045, adopted by regional leaders at the 46th ASEAN Summit, sets out a bold and forward-looking roadmap that places the people of ASEAN at the heart of regional integration and development for the next two decades. It promises a more peaceful, stable and secure region, while ensuring that ASEAN citizens are part of a cohesive and inclusive community that values diversity, promotes human rights and upholds social justice. According to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on ASEAN 2045 released today, the Vision affirms ASEAN's aspiration to become a prosperous single market powered by a highly-skilled, innovation-driven and inclusive workforce. 'The people of ASEAN are expected to benefit from greater employment opportunities, quality jobs, mobility of skilled labour and talents, and a thriving regional economic ecosystem built on science, technology and innovation. 'The Vision also highlights access to a secure and trusted digital space and growth driven by the green and blue economy,' according to the document. The document further outlines improved intra-ASEAN connectivity, ease of travel and business, the use of local currencies for cross-border transactions, and access to resilient healthcare systems. Importantly, it ensures equitable access to opportunities, particularly for women, youth and children, enabling their meaningful participation in decision-making processes. 'For ASEAN's external partners, ACV 2045 opens the door to strategic cooperation with a dynamic and resilient regional bloc committed to peace, stability and sustainable development. 'It presents opportunities for collaboration on global issues such as climate change, non-traditional security threats, and economic governance,' it said.

Kuala Lumpur Declaration sets long-term strategic direction of ASEAN

KUALA LUMPUR: Southeast Asian leaders today adopted the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on ASEAN 2045: Our Shared Future, setting a foundation to guide the region's development and cooperation over the next two decades. The declaration, endorsed during the 46th ASEAN Summit here, represents a significant milestone in the bloc's commitment to building a more resilient, innovative, dynamic and people-centred regional community. It also succeeds the current ASEAN 2025: Forging Ahead Together vision adopted in 2015. According to the Declaration, ASEAN member states reaffirmed their collective resolve to enhance regional unity, promote inclusive and sustainable development and strengthen institutional capacity to respond effectively to existing and future megatrends. The document also envisions ASEAN as the epicentre of growth in the Indo-Pacific region, with a strong emphasis on regional solidarity, a shared identity and equitable access to economic opportunities among its people. 'We underscore the importance of enhancing ASEAN's resilience and promoting collective, efficient, effective and innovative responses to regional and global challenges and future shocks, which would help secure the future of ASEAN and its peoples,' the Declaration stated. Among the key decisions made under the Declaration is the formal adoption of the ASEAN Community Vision (ACV) 2045 and its accompanying strategic plans across four pillars, namely Political-Security, Economic, Socio-Cultural, and Connectivity The leaders agreed that the Declaration, as well as the ACV 2045 and its strategic plans shall comprise the ASEAN 2045. They also reiterated their commitment to enhancing ASEAN's institutional capacity and effectiveness, including reforms to enhance the capacity of the ASEAN Secretariat. The leaders also agreed to adopt the Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI) Work Plan V (2026-2030) at the 47th ASEAN Summit. They also tasked ASEAN ministers and respective ASEAN bodies, with the support of the ASEAN Secretary-General and the ASEAN Secretariat, to carry out communication activities and regularly monitor implementation progress. The Secretary-General will report annually to the ASEAN Summit, and a mid-term review of the ASEAN 2045 agenda will be conducted to ensure it remains responsive to evolving regional and global developments. The Kuala Lumpur Declaration 2045 builds on previous landmark agreements, including the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on ASEAN 2025: Forging Ahead Together (2015), Ha Noi Declaration (2020), the Phnom Penh Connectivity Agenda (2022), the Labuan Bajo Leaders' Statement (2023) and the Vientiane Declaration on the Development of the Strategic Plans (2024). The Declaration underscores ASEAN's continued commitment to uphold the principles enshrined in the ASEAN Charter, international law and the United Nations Charter. The 46th ASEAN Summit, which is being held under Malaysia's 2025 Chairmanship theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', brings together leaders from member states to discuss regional issues and map out the bloc's future direction. 46th ASEAN Summit Key Platform For Boosting Regional Cooperation

KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 (Bernama) -- The 46th ASEAN Summit, which runs for two days beginning today, serves as the main platform for ASEAN leaders to review the region's progress in its three key pillars -- political-security, economic and socio-cultural. The Malaysian Prime Minister's senior press secretary, Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, said the summit is also a key forum for discussing increasingly complex regional and global issues, including the South China Sea dispute, the humanitarian crises in Gaza and Myanmar, unilateral trade tariffs by major powers, the challenges of the digital economy and supply chain resilience. 'The Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) has consistently emphasised that under this year's ASEAN Chairmanship, Malaysia bears a significant responsibility in shaping a stronger, and more inclusive and resilient ASEAN Community. 'Malaysia's main focus is to ensure that ASEAN remains relevant, responsive and people-centred, in line with the ASEAN 2045 long-term vision that will be launched,' he said. He was speaking at a Prime Minister's Office (PMO) briefing held in conjunction with the 46th ASEAN Summit, which was broadcast live on the Anwar Ibrahim and PMO Malaysia Facebook pages today. In addition to the summit with ASEAN member states, Tunku Nashrul said Malaysia will also host the 2nd ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the inaugural ASEAN-GCC-China Summit, both scheduled to take place tomorrow and chaired by Malaysia as the ASEAN 2025 Chair. He said the ASEAN-GCC Summit will review the implementation of the ASEAN-GCC Framework of Cooperation 2024–2028, which includes initiatives in free trade, education, sustainable development, and cultural and digital connectivity. 'The second ASEAN-GCC Summit also reaffirms the long-term commitment between the two regions, which have maintained relations since 1990. 'ASEAN and the GCC are two significant economic blocs, with total trade reaching USD130.7 billion and GCC investments in ASEAN amounting to USD390.2 million,' he said.
