Son recounts last video call with parents before Ahmedabad plane crash
Kheda (Gujarat) [India], June 14 (ANI): Ramesh Mahadev Pawar, who lost both his parents in the tragic Air India-171 plane crash, recalled the last moments he shared with them over a video call shortly before the incident. His parents, Mahadev Pawar and Asha M Pawar, were among the 241 people who died when the London-bound flight crashed minutes after takeoff from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12. Speaking to reporters, Ramesh said, 'My parents were travelling in that dropped them off at the airport. We also contacted them through a video call. Later, when we came to the house, we heard this news. We again went to the airport, where we found out that everyone had been taken to the Civil Hospital. Then we went to the Civil Hospital...' Flight AI-171 was en route to Gatwick Airport, London, when it crashed into a building near the airport shortly after takeoff, killing nearly everyone onboard except one. In response, the government has formed a high-level multi-disciplinary committee to investigate the causes of the crash. 'A High-Level Multi-disciplinary Committee is constituted for examining the causes leading to the crash of the Air India Flight AI-171 from Ahmedabad to Gatwick Airport (London) on June 12, 2025. The Committee will examine the existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and guidelines issued to prevent and handle such occurrences and suggest comprehensive guidelines for dealing with such instances in the future,' an order issued by the Civil Aviation Ministry read. The committee will have access to all records, including, among others, flight data, cockpit voice recorders, aircraft maintenance records, the ATC Log, and witness testimonies, and will publish its report within three months. The committee, headed by the Home Secretary, includes representatives from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Indian Air Force, and aviation experts. The committee will assess the emergency response of the various stakeholders, including rescue operations and coordination among them. It will also suggest policy changes, operational improvements and training enhancements required to prevent such occurrences and handle post-crash incident situations. (ANI)

"Don't think I can ever board an Air India flight in my life": Daughter of Ramesh Patel, who died in AI-171 plane crash
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 14 (ANI): The family of British national Ramesh Patel, who died in the Air India-171 plane crash, reached Ahmedabad. The family members remembered him and expressed fear about boarding an Air India flight in future. Speaking to ANI, Ramesh Patel's daughter Priti Pandya said, 'He (her father) came here for nine days. He just came here to eat did not come back home. This was the first trip I spoke to him 3-4 times a week, but when he video-called on Tuesday, I was working, and I thought I would call him back, and I never was able to. My sister-in-law spoke to him when he boarded the plane.' 'He comes every year to India. He loves India. He has got a house in Gujarat... He loves this country, and he died was meant to be,' she added. Daughter-in-law Kajal Patel told ANI, 'Thursday morning, he rang me and said 'Everything is okay, the weight is okay' and I said, 'That's fine, Dad, don't worry'. He said that he won't ring me again, but then he rang me again and said 'I am in the plane safely and it's on time' and I said 'Okay, see you in the evening'...I asked him not to go as it's too hot in India, but he kept saying he wants to go.' Priti Pandya expressed fear of boarding an Air India flight. She said, 'While coming to Ahmedabad, Air India was an option, but I don't think I can ever board an Air India flight in my life.' On the compensation announced by the TATA Group, they said, 'We will give money, can they bring back our father?' He asked whether there was any cyber attack on the system of the plane by any enemy country, as they try to target India's military installations with their cyber attacks. 'I am not an expert, but there are serious questions about sabotage in the Air India plane that crashed in Ahmedabad within 30 seconds of takeoff. Was there any cyber attack on the system of the plane by any enemy country, as they try to target our military installations with their cyber attacks?' Raut said in a press conference here. He said that maintenance is the key for the aviation sector and raised several questions regarding that. 'The BJP was against the Boeing deal when it happened, and Praful Patel was the Minister of Civil Aviation at that time. People are afraid of travelling by air now. Maintenance is the key for the aviation sector. Who has the maintenance contract for Ahmedabad? Why was Ahmedabad selected for this? Why did the accident happen to the flight from Ahmedabad airport? The way ministers were behaving on the debris of the plane is really sad,' he said. "Sound of the crash felt like our eardrums would burst": Eye witness of AI 171 crash
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 14 (ANI): Rekha Kshtriya, an eye witness of the AI 171 plane air crash in Ahmedabad on Saturday recalled the chilling moments after the sheer tragedy and stated that even though her family was accustomed to loud noises, the sound of the crash felt like their eardrums would burst. Kshtriya further stated that all furniture in their house had started shaking violently. 'I have been staying here since the last 13-14 years... that day around 1:30 p.m. we had heard a loud noise. Although we are accustomed to hearing loud noises, this time the noise felt like our eardrums would burst. It seemed like an earthquake. We had just sat down to have lunch and the furniture in our house had started shaking violently. For a second, it felt like a bomb blast happened.... Then when we went outside, we saw a plan had crashed. We saw broken pieces of aircraft everywhere... it was difficult to understand whether it was a plane crash or a terrorist attack or something else. The whole sky was filled with black smoke... High flames were rising everywhere...' Kshtriya told ANI. As per the order, the Committee will consist of Home Secretary and secretary or joint secretary of the home affairs ministry, secretary of Civil aviation, representative from the Gujarat home department, representative from the state disaster response authority, police commissioner of Ahmedabad, the Director General (DG), Inspection and Safety of the Indian Air Force, DG of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, DG of the aviation regulator- the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, special director of Intelligence Bureau (IB), Director of Directorate of Forensic Science Services. The order stated that the committee may also consist of any other member as deemed fit by the committee, including aviation experts, accident investigators and legal advisors may also be included by the committee. It will conduct site inspections, interview the crew, Air Traffic Controllers (ATCOs) and relevant personnel. The government said that the committee will collaborate with international agencies if foreign nationals or aircraft manufacturers are involved. The AI-171 Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 aeroplane bound for London's Gatwick had crashed shortly after it took off from the Ahmedabad International Airport on Thursday. The airline said only one out of the 242 people on board the aircraft survived the crash. (ANI)
