ATP 250 Boss Open: Bopanna Only Indian Left As Bhambri, Balaji Suffer Defeats

Rohan Bopanna advanced to the ATP 250 Boss Open quarter-finals as N Sriram Balaji and Yuki Bhambri exited
Veteran Indian tennis player Rohan Bopanna and his Belgian partner, Sander Gille, progressed to the quarter-finals of the ATP 250 Boss Open on Wednesday. However, fellow Indians N Sriram Balaji and Yuki Bhambri experienced less success, exiting the tournament with their respective partners.
The third-seeded Bopanna and Gille defeated the local German pairing of Jakob Schnaitter and Mark Wallner 6-3, 5-7, 11-9 in one hour and 21 minutes. They are set to face American Taylor Fritz and Czech player Jiri Lehecka in the next round.
India's top-ranked doubles player, Yuki Bhambri, partnered with American Robert Galloway, but despite a valiant effort, they lost their opening match. The Indo-American duo fell in two close tie-breakers, 6-7(5), 6-7(5), to Mexico's Santiago Gonzalez and American Austin Krajicek in one hour and 34 minutes.
Balaji and his Mexican partner, Miguel Reyes-Varela, also fought hard but ultimately succumbed 7-6(5), 3-6, 5-10 to the second-seeded French pair of Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul.
Taylor Fritz Through In Singles Too
American second seed Taylor Fritz progressed to the Stuttgart Open quarter-finals on Wednesday, defeating Frenchman Quentin Halys 6-3, 7-6(6). The world number seven, Fritz, fired 12 aces and hit 32 winners in the one-hour-and-23-minute match.
The 25-year-old, a two-time Wimbledon quarter-finalist, will next face Hungarian Marton Fucsovics at the ATP 250 event. Fucsovics secured his quarter-final place by beating Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech 7-6(4), 6-3.
American third seed Ben Shelton also reached the quarter-finals, overcoming Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert 7-6(4), 7-5 in one hour and 50 minutes. The 20-year-old world number 35 will play either Czech eighth seed Jiri Lehecka or German Jan-Lennard Struff next.
'I'm really happy. Happy to get my first win here in Stuttgart," Shelton said. 'I thought I played great in the big moments today down the stretch, and I'm just really happy to be back on the grass competing. It's a completely different game playing on this surface, and hopefully, I can get better and better as this week goes."
