Bangladesh, China hatch another conspiracy against India, redeveloping airport that divided Pakistan into two parts, its name is...
Bangladesh, China planning to corner India... redeveloping airport that divided Pakistan into two parts, its name is... After the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government in August last year, Bangladesh has turned against India and is doing everything that can pose a threat to India's security. An airport was built in Lalmonirhat district in Bangladesh during the Second World War and according to the latest reports, it is now redeveloping the Lalmonirhat airport with the help of China. Lalmonirhat airport is a threat to India's Chicken Neck i.e. Siliguri Corridor. Northeast India is very sensitive from the history of geography. Its geographical boundaries are adjacent to Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and China, making this entire region a strategic gateway for India. In such a situation, if China is involved in the plan to develop the old airbase at Lalmonirhat Airport in Bangladesh, then it is natural for India to be upset. To counter this, India has restarted the Kailashahar airbase in Tripura, which became an important base in the 1971 war. Lalmonirhat is a district located in the north of Bangladesh, which is very close to India's Siliguri Corridor which is only about 15 to 20 kilometers away from India. The Siliguri Corridor connects India to its northeastern states, whose width is only about 20-22 kilometers. If this corridor is disrupted, then 8 northeastern states of India are cut off from the mainland. China has always wanted this and Bangladesh is now supporting it. Seeing this, India has started making a counter strategy. The matter of concern for India is that if China gets the right of logistics and operation regarding Lalmonirhat airbase, then from there it can intensify activities like continuous surveillance of India's northeastern border, signal intelligence and cyber espionage. There is a report about the Kailashahar airport located in the north of Tripura that India has started rebuilding it. This airport was lying idle since the 1990s. This airport played a very important role in the war against Pakistan in 1971. The Indian Army used this airbase for surgical and strategic air operations during the Bangladesh Liberation War. In 2023, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) and the Tripura government together started the process of restarting it. There is a plan to extend its runway from 1200 meters to 1700 meters so that it is possible to land aircraft like ATR-72. According to Mint, on May 26, AAI's Northeast Regional Executive Director M Raju Krishna visited Kailashahar Airport along with MBB Airport (Agartala) Director K C Meena and took stock of the ground situation. Due to which this airport, which has been quiet for the last 30 years, is now going to be activated again. China has been continuously working on the 'String of Pearls' policy to surround India from all sides. China has already started using Pakistan's Gwadar Port, Sri Lanka's Hambantota Port, Bangladesh's Chittagong Port and Myanmar's Kyaukpyu Port for different purposes. And now if the operation of Lalmonirhat airbase also comes into China's hands, then another 'pearl' will be added to its string, which will prove dangerous for India. According to reports, the airports of the Northeast are being built for 'dual use'. That is, they can also be used for military purposes if needed. Kailashhar is a part of this strategy.

Crafty creatures used to reduce risk of bird strike
An Air New Zealand ATR-72 turboprop plane taxis past a wooden coyote silhouette at Dunedin Airport. PHOTO: GERARD O'BRIEN A pack of coyotes have been stalking the runway at Dunedin Airport. They can be seen peering from out of the grass and have been known to not stay in the same spot for too long. But the wooden silhouettes — not the real North American predator — are actually one of many tools used by the airport to reduce the risk of bird strike. Business development general manager Megan Crawford said the "seven dogs and four cats" were made by its Airport Emergency Service team using plywood. Designed to resemble predators to birds, the airport hoped the silhouettes would reduce the risk of bird strike "as much as possible", Ms Crawford said. "We move them around the airport, so they don't stay in the same spot. "But they're always in the grass area around the runway." They had been using them for about eight months. Bird strike resulting from wildlife including plovers, magpies and seagulls proved a "constant risk" that needed to be managed, as was the case at other airports. One of the wooden coyote silhouettes at Dunedin Airport that have been given reflective eyes to "add realism". PHOTO: SUPPLIED Gas cannons, "scaring devices" and other preventive measures, in addition to the silhouettes, were all tools the airport used to manage the risk of bird strike. The effectiveness of the silhouettes to date had been difficult to gauge, Ms Crawford said. "Anecdotally, bird numbers have been less on the airfield since the silhouettes have been introduced." Airport crew chief Bruce Smaill said the silhouettes were made to resemble coyotes or dogs in a state of alert or hunting. He said he copied the idea from the Christchurch City Council, who were using the same type of silhouettes to keep Canada geese off the grassy parked areas near the Avon River/Ōtākaro. "I thought they might have the same effect on our problem birds and they have." They also had reflective eyes "to add realism". As long as they were moved regularly, the silhouettes would have the same effect as if a farmer's dog was present on the airfield, Mr Smaill said. "We cannot have real dogs roaming for obvious reasons."

Malaysia to receive first Leonardo maritime patrol aircraft by end-2026
Published on: Tuesday, May 13, 2025 Published on: Tue, May 13, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Defence minister Khaled Nordin inspecting a maritime patrol aircraft during a visit to Leonardo's facility in Turin, Italy, yesterday. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA: Malaysia is expected to receive its first maritime patrol aircraft from Italian defence and arms company Leonardo by the end of 2026, with the second aircraft scheduled for delivery three months later. Malaysia ordered two ATR-72 maritime aircraft from Leonardo in a RM900 million deal announced in 2023. The air force has plans to buy six maritime patrol aircraft in all, as part of its 2055 development plan. In a Bernama report, defence minister Khaled Nordin said the aircraft would be outfitted with advanced systems including anti-surface warfare and anti-submarine warfare capabilities before its delivery to Malaysia. 'As a maritime nation, Malaysia must have aircraft equipped with state-of-the-art systems like these to carry out patrols. The aircraft will be fitted with anti-submarine systems, enabling them to respond to related activities,' he said. 'As of now, project progress has exceeded 60% and remains on schedule. We are satisfied with the ongoing work carried out by Leonardo,' he said during a working visit to Leonardo's facility in Turin, Italy, yesterday. He described the procurement as a strategic investment to enhance the armed forces' readiness to address regional security challenges, particularly in the increasingly complex South China Sea. The aircrafts' primary roles include anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, and electronic warfare missions. Its secondary roles include search and rescue operations, surveillance of Malaysia's maritime zones, joint operations with armed forces units, and inter-agency enforcement with other government and security bodies. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
