Couple released after $20k damage

A couple were overjoyed to be reunited in court over an anti-Semitic incident which caused about $20,000 in damages through a spate of alleged attacks throughout one of Sydney's wealthiest suburbs, after previously being investigated over the explosive-filled caravan in Dural. Tammie Farrugia, 34, and her partner Scott Marshall, 36, both had their cases heard in the Downing Centre Local Court on Friday after being charged over their alleged involvement in the malicious damage of vehicles and buildings in Sydney's east. The pair were previously charged over an anti-Semitic incident where a car was torched and two buildings were graffitied with anti-Semitic messages in Woollahra on December 11. The words 'Kill Israiel' (sic) were scrawled on the wall of a home in the alleged attack, which caused an estimated $20,000 in damages. Police alleged in court that Farrugia made a post on her social media account on December 10 asking if anyone had jerry cans she could use. Credit: Supplied, Tammie Farrugia, 34, has been released following charges. Facebook 'Anyone got any plastic Jerry cans plz let me know thanks in advance,' Farrugia allegedly posted in a Facebook group. Farrugia has since stayed active on Facebook, commenting about how much she misses Mr Marshall as he remained in custody. 'F**k this shit is killing me not having u by my side or hearing you're (sic) voice if I could trade placed with u I would love u so much baby @Scott Marshall,' she wrote in a comment in December last year. The court has now heard that the couple only provided the fuel cans and moved the torched vehicle but did not have any knowledge to what would occur after. 'They have unfortunately been used to gather the fuel cans and move the vehicle and they did that without any knowledge of what was to occur thereafter and planned by the people who had engaged them at the beginning of this crime,' magistrate Susan McIntyre said. The damage caused cost about $20,000 in damages. NewsWire Credit: NewsWire The court heard that the couple did not know what the vehicle was used for until the incident was televised on the news. However, the court also acknowledged that if they had not committed this crime, the more serious acts of anti-Semitism would not have occurred. The crux 'of this behaviour really is the participation in criminal offending which has ultimately led to really serious and terrifying criminal offending down the track,' magistrate McIntyre said. 'Ultimately I supposed for the participation of Ms Farrugia and Mr Marshall, the activity of the antisemitic actions would not have occurred.' The couple appeared via AVL, and were able to see each other for the first time in months. Farrugia was seen to purposely lift her shirt in front of the camera. Both said 'I love you' to the other and had a quick conversation before court broke for lunch. The couple were happy to reunite via AVL. NewsWire / Gaye Gerard Credit: News Corp Australia Marshall had allegedly received a text from an unknown number offering money in return for 'jerry cans,' whether the couple received renumeration and how much is unknown to the court. Before the incident, Marshall was subject to an intensive corrections order due to a drug court matter – meaning his charges resulted in a breach of his bail conditions. The pair were also previously investigated after a caravan loaded with explosives and a list of addresses, including that of the Great Jewish Synagogue, was found in Dural on January 19. However the court has heard they were not involved. 'Ms Farrugia and Mr Marshall were not part of any antisemitic conspiracy or activity and are not linked in any way to a caravan found on the street in Dural,' Ms Farrugia's lawyer told the court. Ms Farrugia and Mr Marshall were named on a search warrant after police were alerted to the incident, but neither were charged in relation to that matter. The Australian Federal Police later determined the incident was a 'fake terrorism plot' and not a genuine threat. Scott Marshall and Tammie Farrugia were also investigated over the suspected caravan plot. Credit: Supplied Mr Marshall has been charged over the alleged December 10 incident with destroying or damaging property, in relation to the vehicle - not any of the houses, and take and drive conveyance without consent. He has pleaded guilty to both destroying or damaging property and take and drive conveyance without consent. A previous charge of participating in a criminal group to contribute to criminal activity was dropped. Marshall was sentenced to as period of imprisonment for 12 months over the two charges, with a non-parole period of six months, starting from 24 December 2024 till the 23 June 2025. Ms Farrugia was also charged over the same incident, with destroy or damaging property and be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner and pleaded guilty on the 22 May. Her previous charge of participating in a criminal group to contribute to criminal activity was also dropped. Farrugia was released from custody on a community corrections order of 12 months, starting from Friday. The CCO had the additional conditions of being subject to supervision by a CCO officer at Liverpool Community Corrections District Office for the period of the CCO. She is also to participate in any program, treatment, intervention or related activity specified in the CCO order, to abstain from drugs, and to report to the Liverpool Community Corrections within seven days upon release.

Power enclosure maker AVL to establish its first US plant

This story was originally published on Manufacturing Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Manufacturing Dive newsletter. Canada-based AVL Manufacturing has agreed to invest $56 million to establish its first U.S. production facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, to make industrial enclosures for large-scale power generators. The 232,000-square-foot plant, expected to open in September, will create about 300 jobs for the area, according to AVL. Hiring is set to begin in June. AVL's custom enclosures are part of a growing market segment in North America, fueled by the proliferation of data centers to meet surging artificial intelligence demand. Industrial enclosures are often used by technology companies to protect their generator sets — also known as 'gensets' — from weather, dust and other environmental factors. Data centers rely on these enclosures for their backup power. The global genset market was valued at $66.84 billion last year and is projected to cross $130.8 billion by 2037 due to increasing demand for power, according to Research Nester, a market research group based in New York City. The North American market is likely to account for 45% of global revenue in the next 12 years, driven by the huge number of data centers across the continent, according to Research Nester. These data centers, which support cloud computing and internet connectivity, consume roughly 10 times more power than the average American household. Some of the major players in the U.S. market are Schneider Electric, Emerson Electric Co. and Hubbell Inc. Additionally, Switzerland-based ABB recently pledged to invest $120 million in two U.S. manufacturing sites. It has a strong relationship with China, previously landing a contract to make genset enclosures for the country's largest shipping company. AVL, headquartered in Hamilton, Ontario, is expanding into the United States as chipmakers, drug companies and others pledge to expand or relocate their operations domestically in the face of volatile tariffs. 'After considering many markets, we are thrilled that AVL's entrance into the US market is in Charlotte, a vibrant, tech-forward city perfect for us to lay down roots,' AVL President Vince DiCristofaro said in a statement. 'We are excited to tap into this talent pool as we establish our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and create meaningful careers for the residents of this city.' The company established its AVL USA division as part of the move. It will receive a performance-based grant of $100,000 from the One North Carolina Fund, after creating 122 jobs in the Charlotte area, according to the state's commerce department. The average salary for those jobs will be about $90,000 compared to the average Mecklenburg County wage of $86,830. Senzo Meyiwa murder trial postponed as defence seeks more evidence from state

The defence also intends to recall two state witnesses. State Prosecutor George Baloyi is seen at Pretoria High Court on 15 September 2022. Picture: Gallo Images/City Press/Tebogo Letsie The Senzo Meyiwa murder trial has once again been postponed, following a request by the defence for additional information from the state. The trial resumed on Tuesday in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, but was adjourned until next week. The delay comes as the defence seeks access to automatic vehicle locator (AVL) data linked to the cars used in the arrests of the accused. AVL technology shows real-time information about a vehicle's status, including whether it is switched on or off, in motion or stationary, its speed, location, and date. Earlier in the trial, the defence contended that police made multiple stops on different days during which accused one, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, and accused two, Bongani Ntanzi, were allegedly assaulted and coerced into confessing to their involvement in Meyiwa's murder. Senzo Meyiwa murder trial delayed During Tuesday's court proceedings, state prosecutor George Baloyi requested a postponement until next Monday, citing the need for more time to obtain AVL records for several vehicles. 'The challenge is in obtaining the information from the service provider,' Baloyi told Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng. He explained that accessing the AVL records would require Section 205 applications. Section 205 of the Criminal Procedure Act allows investigators the right to access information which is not in the public domain. 'The date of Monday was arranged, keeping in mind that there are these processes that must be followed. 'It's not just a question of calling the service provider to request the AVL. They only release them on the strength of a subpoena, which must be issued by a magistrate,' Baloyi clarified. ALSO READ: Senzo Meyiwa trial: Cop says NPA did not refuse to issue arrest warrant for Kelly Khumalo Constable Yul Craig Liesering informed the court that two of the four vehicles, including a Nissan van, in question had been written off. Brigadier Bongani Gininda, the lead investigator in the Meyiwa murder case, confirmed that the supporting documents verifying this will be provided.' 'We will make it available to the defence to confirm that these vehicles got involved in an accident, who was the driver who then unfortunately passed away and it will be accompanied by a photo album,' he said in reference to the Nissan driven by the late Sergeant Steven Mabena. Gininda also stated that the red Volkswagen (VW) Golf used during Sibiya's arrest was parked outside the court, but was not equipped with an AVL tracker. The AVL records of the Toyota Fortuner that transported Ntanzi to North West have already been presented to the defence and submitted in court. Defence plans to recall witnesses Baloyi also informed the court that defence lawyer, Charles Mnisi, intends to recall two witnesses – police officer Sizwe Zungu and Ntanzi's acquaintance, Msizi Jack Buthelezi. The state is opposing this move. 'He must still expatiate on the reason for requesting the recall of those witnesses, but the information that he is going to receive will enable him to make a call as to whether or not he is still going to persist with that application,' Baloyi said. Zungu had previously testified that he 'partied' with all five accused at a Vosloorus hostel just hours before Meyiwa's death on 26 October 2014. The incident occurred at the home of Meyiwa's then-girlfriend, singer Kelly Khumalo's mother. The defence has requested the AVL records of the car Zungu used on the day in question. The trial is scheduled to resume on Monday. Five men charged in Senzo Meyiwa murder trial Five men — Sibiya, Ntanzi, Mthobisi Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa and Fisokuhle Ntuli — are on trial for Meyiwa's murder. The accused have been charged with murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and possession of ammunition. All five men have pleaded not guilty. NOW READ: Senzo Meyiwa murder trial won't be affected, says police after investigator escapes armed robbery
