MIL, AVNL granted Miniratna status after Operation Sindoor

Nagpur: Soon after Operation Sindoor, two key defence public sector undertakings (DPSUs), formed out of the ordnance factories three years ago, have been granted Miniratna status. The order by the ministry of defence classifies Pune-based Munitions India Limited (MIL) and Chennai-headquartered Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL) as Miniratna category-1 PSUs. PSUs are classified as Maharatna, Navratna, and Miniratna based on their importance and performance. Miniratnas are further divided into Category-I and II PSUs. MIL is engaged in making a whole gamut of ammunition and has units in Chandrapur and Bhandara in the region. Considering the exigency, the leaves of employees in MIL's Chandrapur and Khamaria (Madhya Pradesh) factories had been cancelled during Operation Sindoor. MIL also received substantial export orders recently. One of the highest-selling items was the 155 mm shell used in Bofors-like howitzers. AVNL is engaged in making battle tanks. With its flagship unit located at Avadi near Chennai, it also has a key facility making military vehicles at Jabalpur. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 오늘 신차장기렌트 가장 저렴한 견적서 딱 20장만 뽑아드립니다. 허위견적200%환불보상 더 알아보기 Undo The Vehicle Factory Jabalpur (VFJ) is one of the oldest units of the ordnance factory organisation. Lately, it started a project to revive the old Jonga jeep used by the army in the 1960s and 1970s. The ordnance factories were corporatised in 2021 as part of measures to improve their efficiency. As a PSU, the factories have to achieve financial self-sufficiency. Seven PSUs, including Yantra India Limited (YIL), which has its headquarters in Nagpur, were made out of the 41 ordnance factories.

AVNL looks west to develop light tank platforms

CHENNAI: Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL), a public sector defence company headquartered in Avadi, Chennai, is looking to develop a new generation of light tanks with the help of western defence players. AVNL sources familiar with internal deliberations told TNIE that they have not finalised any agreement with Russian companies. Instead, they pointed to a broader evaluation process involving both Russian and Western light tank platforms. AVNL is understood to be leaning towards western designs that emphasise command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) integration, and lightweight firepower, including 120mm main guns. Indian Army's interest sparked by China's use of light tanks near LAC in '20 Sources said AVNL is in exploratory talks with leading global defence players, including Belgium's John Cockerill and Israel's Elbit Systems. A while ago, speculation was rife that AVNL had finalised an agreement with Russian defence export agency Rosoboronexport (ROE) to locally manufacture a variant of the 2S25 Sprut-SD tank platform. The vehicle, originally designed for Russia's airborne troops, has been cited as a potential fit for India's high-altitude warfare needs. Western light tanks also offer enhanced survivability through composite and modular armour — characteristics that AVNL considers essential for India's future battlefield environment, particularly in rugged, high-altitude terrain.

Pak hacker group claims to have breached defence sites

NEW DELHI: The website of Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL), a defence public sector undertaking that manufactures tanks and armoured vehicles, was taken down on Monday for a thorough audit after a Pakistani hacker group called Pakistan Cyber Force claimed to have defaced it by posting images of a Pakistani flag and a tank, officials aware of the matter said. AVNL is one of the seven new defence companies carved out of the erstwhile Ordnance Factory Board four years ago. 'As a precautionary measure, the AVNL website has been taken offline for a thorough and deliberate audit to assess the extent of any potential damage caused by the defacement attempt and to ensure the integrity of the website,' said one of the officials, asking not to be named. The AVNL website wasn't accessible at the time this report was filed. The development comes at a time when tensions between India and Pakistan have peaked in the aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam terror strike. The Pakistani group also claimed to have accessed sensitive data of the Military Engineer Services and the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses. The latter, however, denied the cyberattack and its website was fully functional. The MES website, however, could not be accessed. Some claims suggest that the attackers may have compromised personal information of people, including their login credentials, the official said. While the extent of the alleged breach is yet to be officially confirmed by Indian authorities, the officials said cybersecurity experts and agencies are actively monitoring cyberspace to detect cyberattacks, particularly those that may be sponsored by Pakistan. 'The ongoing surveillance aims to quickly identify and mitigate any future risks posed by these cyber attackers,' said another official. Monday's alleged hacking is the second such attempt by Pakistan-sponsored hackers. Last week, they made a series of unsuccessful attempts to breach Indian websites, targeting digital platforms linked to children, veterans, and welfare services. The groups, identified as 'Cyber Group HOAX1337' and 'National Cyber Crew,' attempted to deface the websites of army schools in Nagrota and Sunjuwan. Appropriate measures are being taken to bolster the security infrastructure, strengthen digital defences, and safeguard against further intrusion attempts, the officials said. These efforts are focused on enhancing the overall resilience of online platforms and ensuring that the forces are better prepared to defend against future cyber threats, they added.
