Farm machinery firm saves staff following closure of rival

A Powys border farm machinery dealer has saved jobs after expanding its operating area in the north of the UK. Mellington-based RVW Pugh Ltd is the Massey Ferguson franchise owner for Cheshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire and Mid Wales. Following the closure of Malpas Tractors, RVW Pugh Ltd has expanded into the Lancashire area for Merlo, Sumo, Hi-Spec, Vaderstad and AVR customers. The company has retained the employment of former Malpas Tractors staff members, who have knowledge of the area and the local market. Robert Pugh, Managing Director of RVW Pugh Ltd said: 'We are delighted to be able to take on the Lancashire area for the Merlo, Sumo, Hi-Spec, Vaderstad and AVR brands, as well as welcoming our new team members to the company.' RVW Pugh Ltd will have a dedicated area sales manager for the area, as well as a depot for parts sales, warranty enquires and repairs and maintenance work in Lathom. The company will also be taking on the warranty commitments for the Merlo, Sumo, Hi-Spec and Vaderstad branded machinery. The depot is open for AGCO parts, along with a wide range of tools, wearing parts and other merchandise for day-to-day farming jobs. Emma Pugh, Business Manager for RVW Pugh Ltd added: 'We have a new depot for the Lancashire area and would encourage any former customers of Malpas Tractors with outstanding warranties with the Merlo, Sumo, Hi-Spec and Vaderstad brands to contact us with any queries they have.'

Huge number of missing voters sparks major call for automatic system

Major cities across the country face the highest levels of unregistered voters, specifically in areas of the city that are either the most deprived or ethnically diverse More than six million eligible voters are not signed up to vote in British elections, sparking calls for an automatic registration scheme, campaigners say. Major cities across the country face the highest levels of unregistered voters, specifically in areas of the city that are either the most deprived or ethnically diverse. Homeowners, older people and those living in rural areas are more likely to be on the electoral roll. ‌ One in six voters are not registered to vote in bigger cities, whereas just one in 10 voters in rural areas in Yorkshire or Wales are not on the electoral roll, analysis by Unlock Democracy found. ‌ More than 15% of eligible residents, especially young people, ethnic minority voters and renters, are not on the electoral register in cities such as London, Birmingham and Manchester, the campaign group said. Ministers are under pressure to introduce an Automatic Voter Registration (AVR) to make sure all eligible Brits are signed up to vote in elections. In a letter handed to the PM on Tuesday, which was organised by Unlock Democracy, around two dozen MPs called for an end to the UK's 'Victorian era voter registration system'. 'It's time to register every voter,' it said. 'The Government has the opportunity to bring voter registration into the modern era.' It called for an automatic system to be included in elections legislation, which is expected to be introduced later on in this Parliament. An Elections Bill would also include lowering the voting age to 16 years - a Labour manifesto pledge. ‌ Last year's General Election saw turnout at just 59.7%. Only 60% of 18- and 19-year-olds are registered to vote in England, compared to 96% of over-65s, according to the Electoral Commission. And just 72% of Black and mixed-race citizens are registered, compared to 87% of white citizens, it said. Many also face the barrier of not having a Voter ID. The Mirror launched a campaign last year(2024) to target voters who face being excluded at the ballot box. New photo ID rules led to thousands being turned away at the 2023 local elections, the first time the Tory rules came into effect. Tom Brake, Director of Unlock Democracy and former MP said: 'There is a real problem for democracy when the voices of millions of people are unheard: it deepens the already record levels of disengagement and disillusionment with politics. Fortunately, a tried and tested solution - Automatic Voter Registration - can ride to the rescue.'

UN Migration Agency Helping Migrants In The US Return Home Voluntarily

12 May 2025 In a statement on Monday, the UN agency said it is supporting Assisted Voluntary Return (AVR) – not deportation – for those who decide to leave the US. At the request of the US Government, IOM is helping people who register to go back to their countries of origin voluntarily. ' AVR is a well-established, rights-based approach that helps migrants navigate complex global migration systems, regain control over their lives, and make informed choices,' the agency said. Safe, dignified returns 'Our role is to ensure that those who lack the means to return on their own can do so in a safe, dignified, and informed way,' IOM added. The agency made it clear that the US determines its own policies on migration. ' IOM does not facilitate or implement deportations. Our involvement begins only after an individual gives informed consent to receive assistance.' In these instances, 'IOM ensures that people have access to accurate information and essential services, in line with international standards.' The announcement comes as the US seeks to expand deportation of undocumented migrants in continuation of a policy President Donald Trump began nearly 10 years ago under his first administration. He returned to office in January for a second term and has been cracking down on illegal immigration through raids, detentions and deportations. In a video posted to social media on Friday, President Trump said that he had signed an Executive Order 'to launch the first-ever self-deportation programme for illegal aliens,' offering free flights from the US and payment of an 'exit bonus.' Support for a life-changing decision IOM was established in 1951 and promotes humane and orderly migration. For decades the agency has supported AVR programmes in more than 100 countries, 'helping people without resources, legal options, or support return to their countries of origin safely and with dignity,' it said. IOM noted that in the US, ' many migrants face a challenging reality – navigating complex systems with limited options and resources,' and 'this initiative provides support to those who choose to return, helping them make a life-changing decision with care and clarity.'

Trump Unveils Accelerated Deportation Drive With 20,000 More Officers, UN Agreement

President Donald Trump on Friday announced the launch of Project Homecoming, a sweeping federal initiative aimed at accelerating the removal of illegal immigrants from the United States through a combination of enhanced enforcement and government-assisted voluntary departures. The initiative, laid out in a May 9 Trump said the program will both preserve taxpayer resources and restore U.S. sovereignty, adding that the continued presence of illegal immigrants burdens schools, hospitals, and law enforcement. 'This deportation bonus will save American taxpayers billions and billions of dollars,' Trump said in a video 'Eventually, when the illegals are gone, it will save us trillions.' The $1,000 self-deportation incentive was previously announced by DHS, which said use of the CBP Home app could lower the costs of a deportation by around 70 percent compared to traditional enforcement methods. Related Stories 5/8/2025 5/7/2025 Trump warned that illegal immigrants who fail to heed his administration's call to self-deport will face 'severe consequences,' including jail time, wage garnishment, the confiscation of savings and personal property, including homes and vehicles, as well as 'sudden deportation, in a place and manner solely of our discretion.' To further encourage self-deportations, Trump said individuals who comply may be eligible to return to the United States through legal channels in the future. 'If you're really good, we're going to try and help you get back in,' Trump said. Shortly after the proclamation's release, an arm of the United Nations that supports various self-deportation programs around the world 'For decades, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has supported Assisted Voluntary Return (AVR) programs in more than 100 countries,' the agency said in a The U.N. agency emphasized that it plays no role in carrying out deportations, noting that its assistance begins only after an individual gives informed consent to leave. 'Our role is to ensure that those who lack the means to return on their own can do so in a safe, dignified, and informed way,' the statement said. 'This initiative provides support to those who choose to return, helping them make a life-changing decision with care and clarity.' A DHS spokesperson confirmed IOM's involvement in Project Homecoming, describing its role as an 'implementing partner' in an emailed statement to The Epoch Times. Trump's proclamation gives federal officials 60 days to begin an 'intensive campaign' targeting those who do not voluntarily depart. The expansion of DHS enforcement will include new hires, interagency transfers, and partnerships with state and local law enforcement.

You can now expand your Sonos system with a Yamaha AV receiver

For some Sonos fans, soundbars — even very capable Dolby Atmos soundbars like the Sonos Arc Ultra — just don't cut it when it comes to home theater surround sound. They want a fully customizable experience that only an AV receiver (AVR)-based system can deliver. If that's your point of view, and if you own one of Yamaha's Aventage AVRs, you can now have your cake and eat it thanks to a software update that brings Works with Sonos compatibility to Yamaha's RX-A8A, RX-A6A, RX-A4A, and RX-A2A. Works with Sonos is a certification program that lets a variety of third-party devices interact with the Sonos ecosystem. In the case of Works with Sonos AVRs, you need to first connect them to a Sonos Port. Once configured in the AVR, triggering music playback on the Sonos Port from the Sonos app automatically powers on the AVR, flips the input setting to the one the Port uses, and lets you control volume level from the Sonos app as well. Recommended Videos To be clear, Works with Sonos isn't new — I bought a Pioneer AVR that's Works with Sonos compatible in 2018. However, this is the first time a Yamaha-built AVR has been given the feature. 'Aventage is our premium AV receiver line,' said Ikuo Tanaka, Group Manager, Home Audio Group at Yamaha Corporation, 'the top choice for custom integration professionals and passionate home theater enthusiasts, making it ideal for Works with Sonos integration. This integration exemplifies how our customers consistently gain powerful new features and capabilities through our firmware updates.' To enable Works with Sonos, you need to use the Yamaha MusicCast app. And just in case you were wondering, nothing is changing on that front: the Aventage AVRs will continue to support all MusicCast streaming and control capabilities. To get going, just make sure both your MusicCast app and your AVR firmware is up to date. As handy as Works with Sonos is for seamlessly combining a Sonos Port and an AVR like Yamaha's Aventage lineup, it misses out on a key strength of both Sonos and Yamaha: Dolby Atmos. With some Sonos speakers, like the Sonos Era 300, Sonos Arc, Sonos Beam Gen 2, and Sonos Arc Ultra, you can stream Dolby Atmos Music natively from services like Apple Music. In theory, you should be able to get the same audio to your Yamaha receiver, except for two problems. First, the Sonos Port can't receive Dolby Atmos Music streams. Second, even if it could, it has no way to pipe that audio into the Yamaha. The Sonos port only has analog stereo, or digital coaxial outputs. Neither of those can deliver multichannel Dolby Atmos to an external device. To do that, the Port would need an HDMI output. At the moment, that leaves Yamaha-owning Dolby Atmos Music fans with only non-Sonos options. An Apple TV 4K running either Apple Music or Tidal would do the trick, as would an Nvidia Shield TV or Shield TV Pro. If you want Atmos Music from Amazon Music, you'll need one Amazon's Atmos-capable Fire TV streamers. Please enable Javascript to view this content
