BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha government has decided to enrol all elderly persons above 70 years under the Ayushman Vay Vandana Yojana (AVVY) in a campaign mode in next 10 days. Of around 23 lakh targeted beneficiaries, 3.45 lakh have been enrolled under the scheme. The Health and Family Welfare department has planned to achieve 100 per cent saturation during Bikash Vahan Jatra to be organised in the state from June 12 to 21. ₹10-lakh health cover rolled out for Delhiites aged 70 and above; CM, AAP trade barbs over insurance model
The Union Health Ministry's Ayushman Vay Vandana Yojana (AVVY) was launched in the national capital on Monday. The health insurance scheme allows those aged 70 and above to avail of free secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation of up to ₹10 lakh. Currently, around 100 hospitals in the city are registered under the scheme. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri distributed the first batch of Vay Vandana cards to beneficiaries at an event in Delhi's Thyagaraj Stadium. The CM said all city residents regardless of their income could register themselves for the AVVY by providing proof of residence. The beneficiary's health records and medication details will be recorded on the Vay Vandana cards, she added. Free check-ups 'The beneficiaries will be entitled to free health check-ups, medicines, and treatment, including emergency care, at any of the empanelled hospitals in Delhi,' said Ms. Gupta. 'Serving the elderly is our priority. The Central and Delhi governments are providing health coverage of up to ₹10 lakh to citizens aged 70 and above,' the CM later posted on X. She also urged the elected representatives to prepare lists of senior citizens in their constituencies and assist them with the registration process. While the AVVY does not put a cap on the beneficiaries' income, an official said those availing of benefits under other government schemes, such as the Central Government Health Scheme, would be covered under only one scheme of their choice. 'Delayed execution' Following the event, Ms. Gupta criticised the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi for the 'injustice' caused to citizens by 'delaying' the implementation of the scheme 'due to ego and politics'. 'Today, I want to clearly state that Delhi will now make its own decisions. This government stands with its senior citizens and is fully committed to protecting their dignity and rights,' she added. In response, AAP termed the AVVY a 'scam'. AAP's chief spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar said the scheme does not cover outpatient department (OPD) services. 'Until a beneficiary is admitted to a hospital, they cannot avail of benefits under this scheme. If an elderly person has diabetes and needs regular check-ups or suffers from minor ailments like fever, they will not be able to use this scheme,' said the Opposition party leader. She accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of 'prioritising grand events over Delhi's health care'. 'Kejriwal model' 'Under the Arvind Kejriwal [former Delhi CM and AAP chief] model, all treatment — from OPD consultations to surgeries — was free for every Delhiite. If the BJP truly cares for people's health, it should adopt the Arvind Kejriwal model,' said Ms. Kakkar.
