Residents complain about poor digital services at e-seva centres in Greater Chennai Corporation wards
A growing number of residents across Chennai are voicing their frustration over the poor delivery of digital services at e-seva centres, which were meant to be a bridge between citizens and government departments and make the public-state interface smooth. Complaints have been pouring in from multiple neighbourhoods about long queues, malfunctioning systems, and centres that have not opened since the pandemic. Residents said the Greater Chennai Corporation's (GCC) recent announcement of plans to establish new e-seva centres in all 200 wards to improve access to services such as Aadhaar updates, income and nativity certificates, was a welcome move, but it needed to first ensure that the existing e-seva centres were functional. They also urged the government to specify a timeline for this, and stick to it. 'In ward 182, residents come every day asking when the e-seva centre will reopen,' said K.P.K. Sathish Kumar, Opposition Leader in the GCC Council. The Perungudi zone centre, once run by Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation Limited (TACTV) and inaugurated by former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in 2015, has remained non-operational since the pandemic-induced lockdown. The situation is no better in north Chennai. 'People are being sent to taluk office centres for basic services,' said T.K. Shanmugam, president of the Federation of North Chennai Residents' Welfare Associations. 'The coordination between departments is lacking. These centres should be efficient, and help people finish their tasks fast, not be a bigger burden for them,' he added. Geetha Ganesh, secretary of the AGS Colony Residents' Welfare Association, pointed to systemic inefficiencies. 'The token system is never followed when there are crowds, and network issues are routine. For Aadhaar-related work, we're told to go elsewhere. That defeats the purpose of a one-stop neighbourhood digital centre,' she said. While this has always been the case, the pressure has started mounting, as it usually does ahead of summer exam results, when thousands of students and families will require certificates to put in their applications for college admissions. With 60% of private centres — licensed by the Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency or the Government of India — shut down due to poor viability, residents have naturally turned to the government, in this case, the GCC, for answers. Lack of trained staff is another major hurdle. 'Many centres that did reopen are unable or unwilling to provide full services due to their staff's inadequate training,' said a councillor, adding that both staff and infrastructure need urgent upgrades.

Hours before café shuts, Aadhaar touts target investigating journalist's phone with 200 OTPs
Lucknow: Hours before the owner of the café that ran a tout syndicate at Ratan Square on Vidhan Sabha Marg was evicted on Tuesday, the suspect targeted this reporter's phone by generating over 200 OTPs in 60 minutes. A TOI report published on Sunday had exposed a network of touts at this café that was involved in producing counterfeit government identification documents, including EPIC and others for Aadhaar demographic updates. The syndicate exploited the reporter's alternate mobile number, which had been provided to procure a fake Aadhaar number in the name of UP deputy CM Brajesh Pathak, by registering it across multiple platforms such as e-commerce websites, financial institutions, automobile companies and others. The suspect had used an OTP tasker to bombard the phone in the early hours. An OTP tasker is a system or software component designed to automate the generation, delivery, and validation of OTPs in authentication workflows. It acts as a middleware or backend service that handles OTP-related tasks efficiently, especially in high-traffic applications like banking, e-commerce, and user logins. Meanwhile, on Monday afternoon, when a district administration team under cover arrived at the café posing as customers, they were offered fabricated government documents for Rs 15,000 each. The authorities are yet to file an FIR in connection with the Aadhaar-related matter. Lucknow district magistrate Vishak G said, "The SDM Sadar will submit a detailed report on the tout menace and then the course of action will be finalised." Meanwhile, Lucknow cyber cell inspector Brijesh Yadav said, "In cases of suspected online intrusion, taking steps is important which includes two-factor authentication wherever possible, using tools like authenticator apps or biometric verification to strengthen defences. Also reported the incident to 1930 and to the nearest cyber cell which is in every district now. This is a textbook example of how one should respond to potential cyber threats." Egmore postal facility: a multiplicity of services and a touch of heritage and history
Number 5 & 7 on Ethiraj Salai in Egmore is associated with heritage. The Office of the General Manager, Postal Accounts and Finance functions from the sprawling premises. Amidst the bustle that inevitably goes with an office of such gravitas and stature, stands a ochre-red building that is physically united to its past, but is aligned with the spirit of the campus. It allows itself to be led into the daily grind, parcel post services being operated from its ground floor. The grandeur of this building can put the other buildings in the shade unless one drops in regularly for transactions with any of the sections. If that is the case, one would not have missed the helpful services offered by some of these sections. One of them is the all-women post office which has received good reviews from users particularly for the Aadhaar-related services it offers. The all-women post office operates between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., and the Aadhaar registration and allied services can be availed between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The next stop is the canteen known beyond the gates for its purse-friendly, clean gastronomic fare. Its old building under renovation, the canteen has been temporarily shifted to a makeshift facility now. The office also runs a handy, well-appointed, artistically designed creche to take care of the children of the employees.
